Chapter 646: Confrontation

Hearing Mobley's description, the white people behind him burst into angry shouts once again.

All Donnie could do was raise his hand to suppress the voices of the crowd.

"Tell her to take good care of herself; as for all the hospital expenses, Surf Hotel will pay for her, and as for her SAT exam, I will personally get the Governor to write her a letter of recommendation. Moreover, Surf Hotel will bear all her college expenses."

Such an answer, naturally, caused a roar of cheers from the crowd.

Afterward, Donnie called the trembling Irving to his side. Although Irving was somewhat apprehensive, he dared not defy Donnie's will and approached him timidly.

"I believe that this incident does not represent the entire North District, and even those kids did not do it on purpose. But as you can see the situation we are in, I need those kids to come out and tell us about last night. Only by doing this can we restore peace to Atlantic City!"

Irving said with a sobbing voice, "Mr. Block, those people fled Atlantic City last night. My men have already turned North District upside down and haven't found them!"

"Bullshit, those people must be hidden by you. If they truly left, why not let us search!"

Mobley didn't listen to the explanation from Irving and shouted loudly.

And the people behind him shouted just as loudly.

Where would Irving dare to let these people in? He could guarantee that if these people were let in, whether or not those few were found, the whole North District would be destroyed.

As the boss of North District, if he could not stop this, he would also lose the prestige of North District.

But facing the excited crowd, Irving didn't dare to say anything and could only put his pleading gaze on Donnie.

Donnie, looking at the people blocking the entrance of North District, said loudly, "Ladies and gentlemen, do you trust me and Mr. Nucky?"

People looked at each other, and someone suddenly shouted from the crowd, "Atlantic City is what it is today because of Mr. Block and Mr. Nucky. If we don't trust you, who are we supposed to trust?"

Once someone took the lead, naturally, others followed, and amidst the noisy voices, those who trusted Donnie overwhelmingly prevailed.

"Good, since you all trust us, I am now going to send my men to North District to search for those people. If they are in North District, we will definitely bring them out and have them bear the legal responsibility they should. If they are not there, I will also send people to search elsewhere for them!"

After Donnie made his promise, Chris led a team toward North District. The residents of North District watched them warily, not showing any resentment but rather filled with gratitude.

"Mr. Block, please believe us, the whole North District did not want this to happen!"

At this point, Irving was still pleading with Donnie.

Donnie nodded and said, "I naturally believe this, and I also acknowledge that the majority of black people in Atlantic City are good and kind-hearted. They don't want to do anything illegal. But you should understand that within any community, there are both good and bad people. Fortunately, this matter hasn't escalated, or our Atlantic City could very well become the next Tulsa. I will absolutely not allow such a thing to happen!"

Irving nodded awkwardly.

At this moment, his heart was also filled with immense anger. He was furious with those young men. Just when Donnie and the other district leaders were discussing increasing benefits for their North District, such an incident occurred. Wasn't this tantamount to adding fuel to the fire?

Donnie looked at Irving with frustration and rebuked, "I don't understand how you manage the North District. Don't you realize what time it is? The people from those districts have always opposed giving you the same welfare benefits as the North District. And now, you've gone and done something like this. How do you expect me to explain to them?"

Irving's complexion changed, and he asked anxiously, "Mr. Block, what about our welfare in the North District?"

Donnie snorted coldly, "You'd better pray that my men can find those bastards. Otherwise, do you think the people of Atlantic City will stand for this situation?"

Irving looked ashen. He had promised the people of the North District that Donnie would surely fight for their welfare!

"Mr. Block, you must believe us; those few cannot represent the North District!"

Donnie waved his hand impatiently. "Is it any use to say these things now?"

Chris's men had been inside for over an hour, and when the people outside began to grow impatient, Chris and his men emerged.

"We didn't find those people!"

Boom...

This response clearly couldn't satisfy the white folks, and they instantly grew restless. Seeing this, Chris hurriedly stepped in front of Donnie to protect him.

"Everyone listen to me, listen to me!"

Donnie shouted, and with the cooperation of Chris and Mobley and others, the people were somewhat calmed.

Seeing this, Donnie continued, "Just now, you all said you were willing to trust me. Since my men have gone in to investigate, everyone should accept the outcome!"

Mobley shouted, "It's not that we don't trust you, Mr. Block, but now, just because those few aren't here, does that mean we should let these people off the hook?"

Donnie said, "I don't believe this incident represents the entire North District, but we definitely can't let those people go. Here, I promise everyone that I am personally willing to offer a $100,000 reward for their capture. Whoever brings them back to Atlantic City can claim this $100,000 bounty.

Furthermore, to ensure that the residents of Atlantic City can live happily here, Nucky and I have decided to build a school and a hospital in each of the East District, West District, and South District. Any resident with Atlantic City residency can send their children to these three schools for free. We will also establish a scholarship fund to reward students who are accepted into university, covering all their tuition fees.

As for the hospital, likewise, any resident with Atlantic City residency can receive treatment free of charge here, no matter the disease!"

Well, except for incurable diseases!

Although this news had already spread throughout Atlantic City before this, it was still just a rumor and not yet a reality. Now that Donnie had personally confirmed this in front of everyone, the crowd of white folks began to cheer!

With such cheers, the issue naturally became easier to resolve.

With Donnie and Nucky persuading together, these people finally left.

And now, it was time for Donnie to face those North District residents with faces as pale as death!
