Chapter 558: 558. Trap!
The special discovery made by Brainstorm put both Billy and Franklin on high alert. After their experience in the realm of the Black Panther God, their perception of deities had completely shattered.
Regardless of how gods had treated humanity in the past—whether they were protectors of Earth's various continents or not—the current reality was clear: they had fallen. Those who hadn't perished had either become something else or were barely clinging to existence.
Finding something in Asgard that did not belong there was more than enough to spark suspicion and caution among the trio.
"You lead the way, but I'll walk in front," Billy said, pulling Brainstorm behind him. Franklin silently took up the rear.
Among the three of them, only Billy and Franklin could be considered capable fighters. Brainstorm, though brilliant and in possession of advanced technology beyond this world, had no combat abilities of her own.
In fact, she hadn't even brought any high-tech weapons for this trip.
"I think you're overreacting. There's no sign of life here," Brainstorm said, looking at Billy. However, she didn't refuse his protection and quietly followed behind him.
"This isn't overreacting. Anything related to gods is never simple. Don't forget how dangerous the last divine realm was. How can you be sure the same thing won't happen here?" Billy countered.
"I admit I was a little careless back then," Brainstorm conceded, holding up her tablet. "If I had taken this out earlier, I would have immediately detected the wandering spirits in the mist.
"This device is a culmination of multiple civilizations' technological advancements. No energy signature can escape its detection. So you can relax—there's no other life form here except us."
"I hope you're right... but we should still be careful," Billy said firmly.
Brainstorm pursed her lips but didn't argue—after all, Billy was only looking out for her.
She refocused on her tablet, and soon, they reached the location marked with a special symbol on the screen.
Looking up, the trio found themselves at the ruins of the Bifrost.
Once, this had been a dimensional bridge forged by Odin's divine power. Activating the mechanism would allow Asgard's divine energy to charge it, opening a portal known as the Bifrost.
With the Bifrost, the Aesir could travel freely across the Nine Realms and even reach any location in the universe.
But now, the Bifrost was long gone.
All that remained was a ruined platform, a shattered crystalline bridge leading into the void, and no trace of the once-glorious rainbow light.
"This is it," Brainstorm said, pointing at the collapsed structure.
"So this is the Bifrost... It's been completely destroyed," Billy remarked.
"Not just that—all its divine energy has been completely drained. That thing really isn't picky about what it devours," Billy added with a frown.
"Val, where exactly is this thing that doesn't belong to Asgard?" Franklin asked his sister, walking up with a puzzled look.
Throughout their journey, Franklin had been carefully sensing their surroundings. No matter how meticulously he searched, he found nothing unusual.
This made him doubt whether his sister's device was malfunctioning or if the divine realm was interfering with its detection.
"It's in the ruins ahead. My device can generate a 3D projection of its exact location. It's not far from us," Brainstorm explained before quickly dashing toward the ruins.
Billy and Franklin immediately followed.
After circling the ruins for a bit, they spotted an opening between two massive collapsed stone slabs.
"According to the scan, this should be the only entrance," Brainstorm said, looking at the narrow opening, which was barely big enough for a head to fit through.
"Are you sure there's something inside? I don't sense anything," Franklin asked, eyeing his sister's excitement with some skepticism.
"I told you—our perception methods are different. You and Alex use magic to detect energy, but that thing has no energy signature, which is why you can't sense it. My device, however, detects vibrational frequencies. Understand?"
Brainstorm blinked as she earnestly explained to her brother. Then, she crouched by the dark opening and shone the tablet's flashlight inside.
The flashlight was powerful, but it still couldn't illuminate much. The interior seemed to lead straight into the depths of the Bifrost, with nothing visible beyond metal and stone. Further in, it was pitch black.
"Tch, this opening is too small. I can't see anything," Brainstorm muttered, frowning. She was really itching to take a closer look.
Unlike Alex and the others, who were focused on restoring the magical dimensions to the real world, Brainstorm had only one goal—bringing the technology of the magical dimensions back with her.
The core of the Bifrost was particularly appealing to Brainstorm. Since this was a piece of technology, the entity that had consumed the divine energy here hadn't damaged the core.
If they could take this back, the "toy" would be enough to keep Brainstorm entertained for the entire winter break.
Moreover, the object deep within that didn't belong to Asgard had caught her attention as well. Like everyone else, Brainstorm was curious about its origins.
With this in mind, Brainstorm turned around, hands on her hips, and looked at her two brothers.
"So, which of you two will lend a hand and help me lift these rocks?"
Billy and Franklin exchanged glances, both hesitating.
"Don't you want to know what that thing is? It might be an important clue. Who knows, it could help Mr. Alex," Brainstorm added, trying to persuade them.
At her words, Billy sighed deeply and nodded.
"I'll do it. I'm a bit sturdier, so even if there's danger inside, I can handle it."
With that, Billy Batson pulled Brainstorm back and waved at her and Franklin. "You two stay back a bit. It might get noisy here."
Without objections, Franklin grabbed his sister and moved back to a small snow mound about ten meters away.
They weren't unfamiliar with Billy Batson. From how Brainstorm addressed him as "senior," it was clear that the Fantastic Twins had researched all the superpowered individuals in the wasteland before embarking on this journey.
Because of this, they were very familiar with Billy's abilities.
Seeing Brainstorm and Franklin take cover behind the snow mound, their small heads peeking out to watch him, Billy shook his head helplessly.
Then, he turned his attention back to the ruins before him.
"Using Zeus' power in Odin's realm… this is a first for me."
Billy raised an eyebrow but didn't dwell on it. With a swift command, he called out.
"SHAZAM—!"
Crack!
The thunder, infused with divine power, thundered from the skies and tore through the heavy snow, crashing down on Billy.
In that instant, Billy's frail form suddenly expanded with energy, and in the blink of an eye, he transformed into an incredibly muscular and powerful man.
The red bodysuit wrapped around him, and a golden lightning bolt symbol on his chest radiated immense divine power. Continuous streams of energy poured out from his body, and his divine magic formed a new limb, replacing his broken leg.
"Stay back for now. I'll clear these ruins first," Shazam said, eyes locked on the broken Bifrost without turning his head.
However, just as he was about to make a move, the tablet in Brainstorm's hand suddenly emitted a rapid alarm, and the red dot on the screen began to spread.
"This... this is impossible," Brainstorm stammered, her eyes widening as she stared at the tablet in her hands.
"What's going on?" Franklin asked immediately.
"The thing inside activated from within, just now! But..." Brainstorm frowned as she watched the strings of characters flashing across the screen. "It's a signal emitter! Someone activated it!"
"A signal emitter?" Billy stopped what he was doing and turned his head to look at Brainstorm.
"Yes. It had been dormant before, but now it's been activated, emitting spatial disturbances. You might not feel it, but in multiple dimensions, this is like turning on a large sound system. It won't be long before the surrounding dimensions detect changes here."
"But why would it suddenly activate? Could there be others here besides us?!" Franklin immediately expanded his senses.
"Impossible. If there were others here, you wouldn't need to act. Alex would have found them first," Billy shook his head.
"Then why would this happen?" Franklin suddenly had a realization. "Could someone have activated it from outside the dimension? The person who left it here must have had remote control capabilities."
At these words, Billy fell into thought, and Brainstorm's throat dried as a troubling guess entered her mind.
After a moment of silence, Billy was about to speak when he was interrupted by Brainstorm.
"I know!"
Her voice caught the attention of both Billy and Franklin.
"It's Billy!" Brainstorm's voice trembled slightly.
"It's your divine power. The divine energy surge from your transformation activated it."
"We need to warn Alex! This is a trap!"
At that moment, a ripple-like distortion appeared in the space behind Brainstorm. Then, a mass of squirming, intestine-like substance began to emerge.
