Chapter 565: 565. The Attack of the Steppenwolf!
Sometimes, the speed of an enemy's attack can be faster than anyone expects.
By the time the Amazon warriors guarding the temple noticed the invaders, it was already too late. Countless parademons, armed with Apokoliptian weapons, poured out of the blue portal like a swarm of locusts, buzzing as they emerged.
"Invaders!!"
The captain of the guard let out a roar and immediately drew her bow, shooting a parademon in the head, killing it instantly.
The surrounding Amazon warriors quickly reacted. The combat instincts encoded in their genes allowed them to enter battle mode at any time, even if they were caught off guard.
Arrows flew, and the first wave of these parademons was quickly eliminated. However, the Amazon warriors were stunned to see that the parademons emerging from the portal seemed endless.
Just as one batch was killed, another batch appeared, and even more kept coming, buzzing and circling in the sky, ready to strike at any moment.
When one of the parademons aimed its weapon at her, the captain of the guard performed a dangerous roll to evade the shot. Then, she swiftly drew her sword from her waist and, as she rose, pierced another demon attempting to ambush her.
"There are too many of them."
The captain's deputy shot down another flying demon and quickly moved to her side, standing back-to-back and scanning their surroundings.
"We need to alert more people," the deputy said.
"The Queen must already know about the trouble we're facing here. The other sisters won't just stand by. These creatures dared to invade the holy temple of Paradise Island; today, they will not leave alive," the captain said, gripping her sword with determination.
"Our job is to hold them here and buy time for reinforcements," she continued.
"Sisters, maintain formation!"
On the other side of Paradise Island, Hippolyta furrowed her brow, her face as dark as ink.
She suddenly turned around, placing both hands on Diana's shoulders, and spoke slowly and firmly.
"Diana, listen to me. You must go to find Womborus right now. No matter what happens, stay away from the direction of the temple, do you hear me?"
"Why? I'm an Amazon too! I want to fight!" Diana said, her voice filled with excitement.
No one could remain calm when their home was invaded, and for Diana, who had the body of a demigod, it was even harder.
After all the training, she had become an Amazon warrior, and now that her homeland was under attack, she was unwilling to sit back.
"Don't be foolish!" Hippolyta's tone was stern, then she spoke more seriously. "This isn't your battle, do you understand? With your current abilities, you'd only sacrifice yourself in vain. You are destined to inherit the future of the Amazon tribe."
As she spoke, Hippolyta summoned her horse, mounted it, and continued.
"Obey my orders, Diana, if you still consider me your queen."
Without giving Diana a chance to respond, Hippolyta tugged on the reins, and her sturdy steed let out a long whinny, galloping swiftly toward the temple.
Unlike the horses of the human world, the horses of Paradise Island were blessed by the gods. Although they appeared similar to regular horses, they did not have wings. Their strength, endurance, and intelligence, however, were unparalleled.
Galloping across a hill, the temple gradually came into view.
From a distance, Hippolyta could see the battle unfolding at the temple. The number of monstrous creatures far outnumbered the defending force, and she could only wish that her horse had four more legs.
"Go!"
When a giant, towering figure appeared on the battlefield, Hippolyta's gaze grew cold. She urged her horse to run faster.
"Go!"
The temple was located on the outskirts of Paradise Island and was typically used for ancestor worship. It was far from the city, and even if the Amazon forces gathered and rushed to the location, it would take at least ten minutes.
But in just three minutes, the temple guard had already started to falter. Although they were formidable warriors, the sheer number of the parademons was overwhelming.
And then, another giant emerged, wielding a massive axe and wearing nearly indestructible armor. Every time it struck, an Amazon warrior was killed, causing the balance of the battle to quickly tip in favor of the invaders.
"I have to make it in time."
"Go!"
As Hippolyta watched her sisters fall one by one under the monster's axe, her heart bled, and the murderous intent in her eyes was unmistakable.
Inside the temple, the armored giant cleaved a nearby guard in two with a single swing of his axe. He then raised his head, his sharp gaze fixed on the strange square box in the center of the temple.
This towering man, with a helmet resembling a hammerhead shark, was none other than one of the New Gods of Apokolips—Steppenwolf, a member of the elite forces under the dark lord, Darkseid.
"I've finally found the Mother Box."
Steppenwolf reached out and grabbed the box, his previously unsettled mind now calming as he held the key to his mission.
He had heard of certain things about this planet. Long ago, the Dark Lord, Darkseid, personally led an army to attack this planet. Conquering a backward, ordinary planet was not considered a difficult task.
At that time, Darkseid had already conquered countless planets and dimensions, and no one had ever been able to stop him.
However, what no one expected was that the undefeated Darkseid would experience failure on Earth, a planet so weak that it could barely be considered a threat.
That battle not only left Darkseid severely wounded, but the Mother Box was also stolen by the enemy and lost on this planet. This was something Darkseid could never accept.
But things were different now. The Mother Box had rebooted, and Darkseid once again received the coordinates of this planet. This time, to ensure the complete conquest of Earth, Darkseid specifically sent Steppenwolf to lead the charge.
Although Steppenwolf's combat strength couldn't be compared to someone of Darkseid's caliber, being a New God, he was nearly invincible on an average planet, with almost no existence capable of harming him.
If there were truly any highly threatening beings on Earth, or if some ancient monster from the past had survived, Darkseid himself could have made further plans.
Steppenwolf, of course, was unaware of these calculations. Even if he knew, he wouldn't have objected. Right now, he was just happy to have found the first Mother Box.
As the greatest technological marvel of Apokolips, once all three Mother Boxes were collected and fused, they would release enough power to rewrite the very matter of the entire planet.
In other words, if the Mother Boxes fused successfully, Earth would be left without a single living being, and the entire world would be wiped out. This planet would then be fully incorporated into Apokolips' domain.
"Die!"
While Steppenwolf was admiring the Mother Box in his hand, a sudden roar came from behind him. The Guard Captain, holding a sharp sword, leaped high and aimed for his neck.
The sword came within ten centimeters of Steppenwolf's throat, but suddenly it stopped, unable to move forward.
A massive hand gripped the sword tightly, and Steppenwolf smirked.
"An interesting attempt. I admire your courage to seek death."
"You damn monster!"
Before the captain could finish her words, Steppenwolf squeezed his hand. The indestructible sword shattered, its shards scattering and embedding into the surrounding stone walls.
As her body started to fall, Steppenwolf quickly seized her neck before she could regain her footing.
Feeling the terrifying sensation of suffocation, the Guard Captain struggled desperately. Her hands and feet wildly attacked the giant in front of her.
However, her attacks had no effect. Instead, her hands were cut open by Steppenwolf's armor, bleeding heavily.
"You are a brave warrior," Steppenwolf said calmly, looking at the woman in his grasp, who seemed ready to devour him.
He then shifted his gaze to the entrance of the temple. In the distance, a rider on horseback was speeding towards them.
"That must be the queen you serve," Steppenwolf remarked, glancing at the crowned woman on horseback.
The Guard Captain seemed to not hear him at all. She continued to attack furiously with her fists, but she couldn't make a sound—her breath was cut off from the suffocation.
Her head was swelling, her eyes turned red, bulging slightly from the pressure. The only emotion in her eyes was murderous intent, which disappointed Steppenwolf, who had hoped to see fear in her.
"Let her go!!"
At that moment, Hippolyta arrived. She notched an arrow, and a faint golden glow spread from the tip of the arrow to the shaft.
Steppenwolf sensed the ancient godly aura and paused for a moment, then sneered.
Crack!
With a slight squeeze, the Guard Captain instantly lost all her strength, her arms and legs dropping limp.
"You're looking for death!"
Hippolyta glared angrily. She released her grip on the bowstring, and the ancient divine arrow shot forward like a golden streak, heading straight for Steppenwolf.
However, the arrow was faster, but the portal was even quicker. Steppenwolf made no attempt to dodge and mocked Hippolyta.
In the next instant, the divine arrow flew through Steppenwolf's afterimage and pierced the temple, leaving a massive hole.
Steppenwolf was already gone.
The galloping horse slowed down, and Hippolyta, breathing heavily, gripped her golden bow. An indescribable sorrow and anger surged in her heart.
Looking around at the devastation and the fallen sisters, Hippolyta gritted her teeth and raised her head, her eyes filled with tears as she stared up at the vast sky.
