Chapter 19: Chapter 19: A Beautiful Song
"Captain, I understand you want to head straight to the New World, but shouldn't we get someone with medical knowledge on the crew before we head there? We've been getting by ok by using hospitals anytime one of us got seriously injured. Which luckily has been pretty rare." Jack said.
"Yeah pretty much the only time one of us was seriously injured was your fight against Charlemagne." Yuma added.
"Still my point is that the New World is completely unpredictable. We probably won't have the luxury of stopping at a hospital anytime we need it." Jack continued.
"Yeah, you've got a point but still it's not like we can just stop by anywhere and pick up a doctor. We've been over this. That being said, I agree that we should bolster our ranks before heading out for the New World." I said. "In fact, I actually have a lead on where we can find a crucial member of our crew."
"Really? You're usually so care free but you're really on top of things today Captain!" Jack said. "So where are we off to?"
"Don't worry about it. I've already given Rei the location, we should be there shortly." I replied. After another day of sailing we arrived at our destination, which was the small island of Roga. The island happened to be having a festival when we arrived. As we entered the town, we came across a muscular man with a pinstripe suit and round glasses. He had white hair and a white beard but he didn't seem to be especially old.
"Hey wait a minute I think I've seen that guy before. He was in the paper. Apparently he's a doctor who can cure people that other doctors can't help at all. He's basically some sort of genius, hero doctor!" Jack said excitedly and many of the others mentioned that they had heard of him too. "Whoa Captain! You managed to somehow track him here and now you're going to ask him to join the crew? That's incredible!"
"Huh? What? No, I don't give a crap about that guy. Focus." I said pulling out a flyer from my pocket. "This is the Rose Day Festival. Apparently it's held once a year here in Roga. The many attractions include rose garden displays, food stalls, and (most importantly) live music performances. That's what we're doing here."
"Ok, but didn't you say that you had a lead on a crucial new member? Who could we be recruiting here if not the doctor?" Jack asked.
"Man you can be really dense sometimes Jack. Obviously we're here to recruit a musician for our crew. With all of the best musical talent in the Grand Line gathering in one place this is the perfect place to search." I said pleased with myself.
"But Captain a doctor is clearly more important than having a musician." Jack pleaded.
"Speak for yourself man. I think I'd be a lot more fun to cruise around the sea with some nice tunes."
"O-kay, but can we at least go talk to that doctor about joining our crew too?"
I squinted and looked at the guy he was talking about and said, "Him? Nope, I don't like him. He gives me the creeps."
"But…."
"Nope, decision final. Now let's get serious guys, let's head to the food stalls and stock up on food and drinks before to music starts. We've got a lot of work to do today people."
Jack tried to protest more but I had stopped paying attention and was already stuffing my face and candy apples and various other festival foods.
"Hey Yuma, you've been with the Captain the longest, how do we talk sense into him?" Jack asked Yuma.
"Um, you can't. I stopped trying to do that a long time ago. You've been on the crew almost as long as me I'm surprised you haven't figured that out yet. Listen, don't worry about it, somehow Gai's whims tend to work out for the best in the end. Let's just see where he goes with this" Yuma said as he handed Jack a cotton candy. "In the meantime just try to enjoy yourself pal."
During the live music portion of the event dozens of musical acts took the stage ranging from good to great. There were so many great choices I didn't know how I was going to choose just one. Then it was suddenly time for the final performance.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have a very special surprise for you today! To close out the event, we invited the worldwide sensation! Isabella!" The announcement set the crowd into an absolute frenzy. Apparently this lady was supposed to be a superstar singer. I was excited to see this performance, I wondered if she'd live up to the hype. Then a lovely petite, dark haired woman in an elegant black dress made her way onto center stage.
The crowd that had been erupting uncontrollably since her name was announced had become so silent you could hear a pin drop, and the only sounds that could be heard were the sounds of Isabella singing. That is if you could call it singing, the sounds her voice made were so incredibly beautiful it made me question if I had ever heard true music before. Even all the incredible musicians that had performed prior that I was so impressed by, now seemed like nothing more than the incoherent noises of a belligerent child.
After her performance I was convinced of one thing, I had to have her on my crew. "Hey do you think I can go back stage and meet her?" I asked one of the festival workers.
"Yeah right! No way pal, get lost!" He said dismissively without even looking up at me.
"Oh really? You're going to say that to one of the Warlords of the Sea?" I asked with my hand on my sword. I wouldn't really kill this guy over seeing this lady, but I wanted him to think I would.
"O-of course sir! S-so so sorry! I-I didn't realize who you were! Please right this way!" The attendant managed to stammer out after looking up and seeing me. After making a quick pit stop I went backstage to meet Isabella.
"Hey! Who in the world destroyed my rose display? It's completely ruined." A man said as he looked at a torn up piece of land that used to have hundreds of roses in an elaborate arrangement.
Meanwhile backstage, "Miss Isabella you have a visitor." The attendant said as he nervously knocked on the door.
"What? Nobody should be allowed back here? Not even the King of Roga would be allowed an audience with Isabella! I thought I told you that!" An older woman who was Isabella's tour manager yelled.
"It's fine, please come in." Isabella said.
"You're being too nice again Isabella." Her manager said while shaking her head.
I flung the door open and dropped the hundreds of roses that I borrowed from some guy into the room. "These are a gift for you. Though even these lovely roses pale in comparison to the beautiful performance you put on tonight." I said. "Allow me to introduce myself." I said with a courteous bow.
"No need, you are one of the Seven Warlords, Buster Gaileo, are you not?" Isabella asked me.
"Yes, I forget sometimes that I'm somewhat well known. Anyway what I really wanted to talk to you about was an offer I had for you."
"I see, well I do get these kind of offers quite often, so I've become used to it."
"I don't doubt it after seeing you tonight."
"While I am flattered, unfortunately I will have to decline."
"I see that really is too bad." I said disappointed.
"I really wanted you to join my crew."
"I'm sorry but I can't marry you." We said in unison.
"Eh? Marry you? Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed your singing but not that much." I said.
"Oh sorry that's the request I usually get. But wait you want me to join your crew? As in your pirate crew?" Isabella asked.
While I was talking with Isabella, that doctor my crew was telling me about earlier was in a room by himself.
"That was the crew of The Beast Sword Pirates! Did they really send a Warlord after me? Is the Navy onto me already? This isn't fair!" The doctor said to himself.
