Chapter 59: Chapter 57: Interview
Zaboru looked at Sayuri Yamaoka, who sat across from him in the office. She maintained a professional posture, her expression unreadable. He knew he couldn't let her dictate the flow of the conversation. As the company owner, he needed to assert his authority while maintaining a fair and professional demeanor.
Clearing his throat, he spoke calmly but firmly. "I understand your position, Yamaoka-san, but let me be clear—I'm the owner of this company, and I hope you're aware of that."
Sayuri gave a slight nod, a faint smile appearing on her lips. She seemed to approve of Zaboru reminding her who was in charge. "Yes, I understand, Mr. Renkonan."
Zaboru nodded, satisfied that they were starting on the right foot. "First, let me ask you—are you familiar with video games?"
Sayuri tilted her head slightly, considering the question. "I know the basics, but I wouldn't say I'm an expert. What I do know is that the video game industry faced a market crash last year—it was everywhere in the news."
Zaboru nodded. "That's correct. The industry has been struggling, but that's exactly why my company, ZAGE, is entering the market. Our goal is to develop and sell quality products that will not only be profitable but also help revive interest in video games for the future. Right now, we have one home console in development along with game cartridges. The console will be ready for launch in the short term."
Sayuri listened attentively before asking, "So your business model is entirely centered around the video game industry?"
"That's right. Our initial focus is hardware and software development which is Game consoles and it's video games, but in the future, we aim to expand into publishing games for 3rd party too."
Sayuri crossed her arms. "I see. If I were to work here, my role would be to manage and oversee company finances, correct?"
"Exactly. Your expertise will be crucial in budgeting, financial planning, and ensuring that we remain profitable while we establish ourselves in the industry."
Sayuri nodded thoughtfully before leaning slightly forward. "What is your long-term vision for ZAGE? What makes you confident that your company will succeed where others have struggled?"
Zaboru smiled at her question—this was exactly the kind of thoroughness he was hoping for. "I have two main strategies. First, we're focusing on high-quality software. Many companies have made the mistake of flooding the market with poorly made games, which contributed to the crash. We will ensure our games meet strict quality standards before release. Second, we're using innovative technology to provide an experience that feels fresh compared to what's currently available. Our hardware is designed to be efficient, affordable, and powerful enough to support engaging gameplay."
Sayuri remained silent for a moment, then nodded. "That's an ambitious but solid plan. Now, let's talk about the company's current financial status. What capital do you have available, and what are your projected expenses for the first year?"
Zaboru had anticipated this question and had come prepared. He retrieved a folder containing detailed financial projections and slid it across the desk. "Here's our current budget. We have enough capital to sustain operations for at least a year without immediate profits. This includes employee salaries, manufacturing costs, marketing, and development. Our goal is to break even within two years and start generating steady revenue thereafter."
Sayuri flipped through the pages, studying the numbers. "And what about financial risks? Do you have contingency plans in case of unexpected losses?"
Zaboru tapped the desk lightly. "Yes. We have secondary investors lined up if necessary, and I'm personally prepared to reinvest my own savings if we hit temporary financial hurdles. The key is making sure our first console launch is a success. If we achieve that, securing further funding will be much easier."
Sayuri closed the folder and looked up at him. "Alright, now let's discuss my salary. What are you offering?"
"Since we haven't officially started production or made any sales yet, I can offer you 10,000 yen per week, with overtime pay for any extra hours worked. This is a temporary starting salary, and once ZAGE officially launches, we can adjust your salary accordingly based on company performance."
Sayuri tapped her fingers on the folder, weighing the offer. "While I understand that this is a startup, considering my experience and the fact that I'll be handling the company's finances, I'd like to negotiate for a higher starting salary. 10,000 yen per week is reasonable for a junior position, but for someone managing financial operations, I believe 15,000 yen per week would be more appropriate."
Zaboru smirked slightly. He expected negotiations, and he respected that she was advocating for herself. "That's fair reasoning, but since the company is still in its early stages, 15,000 yen is a bit high for now. How about 12,000 yen per week, with a performance-based increase after three months? If ZAGE's financial situation improves, we'll adjust accordingly."
Sayuri considered the offer carefully before giving a small nod. "That's acceptable. If the company performs well, I'll expect a fair salary adjustment in the future."
Zaboru extended his hand toward her. "Then we have a deal?"
Sayuri hesitated for a brief moment before shaking his hand firmly. "Yes, we have a deal. I'll start tomorrow."
"Great. I'll prepare the official contract for you to sign by then."
Sayuri stood up, adjusting her suit. "I appreciate the opportunity, Renkonan-san. See you tomorrow."
Zaboru watched her leave, feeling satisfied. With Sayuri handling ZAGE's finances, he could now focus on other aspects of the company. One step at a time, ZAGE was coming together.
