Chapter 6: Chapter 7: Rukawa Kaede's Challenge
Akagi Takenori naturally wouldn't allow Sakuragi Hanamichi to easily dunk. He jumped up, ready to block.
However, whether it was due to distance or Sakuragi Hanamichi's deliberate action, the basketball didn't go into the hoop. Instead, it hit the rim and bounced out of Sakuragi's hand.
Sakuragi's hand, under the force of the dunk, continued to follow through and slammed downward.
The next moment, everyone heard a loud "slap."
Sakuragi's hand landed squarely on Akagi Takenori's head.
The powerful blow caused Akagi to crash down, his body slamming toward the floor.
A second later, another loud "bang" echoed.
Akagi Takenori lay face down, motionless on the ground.
The entire court fell into an eerie silence.
Everyone's gaze was fixed on Akagi Takenori, lying still on the floor.
Faintly, they could see a handprint on his head, glowing red as if it had been burned by a hot iron.
Aoi Kunisaku twitched his mouth, his face showing a bit of disbelief.
That slap had been incredibly loud.
He wondered if Akagi Takenori might suddenly be knocked senseless.
Just as everyone was worried about the still figure of Akagi Takenori, he slowly rose from the floor.
When the crowd let out a relieved sigh, Akagi Takenori exuded an aura of black smoke, his face twisted with anger. He grabbed Sakuragi by the neck and hissed, "You little brat, you think I'll let you off this time? I won't forgive you no matter what!"
"I… I didn't do it on purpose…" Sakuragi Hanamichi's face turned bright red as he struggled in pain.
Akagi Takenori, unable to hear anything at that moment, shouted, "You bastard, I'm going to take you down!"
"Help… help me… I really didn't mean to!" Sakuragi Hanamichi begged.
The situation began to spiral out of control.
The practice match was forced to end due to the commotion between the two.
Aoi Kunisaku, with a helpless expression, walked off the court. He grabbed his jacket and said to Shimizu Kanon, "Looks like the game's not going to continue. Let's go, Kanon."
He then yawned.
"Ah?!" Shimizu Kanon quickly stood up and said, "Saku-chan, we can't leave like this! We came to register today."
Aoi Kunisaku acted like he didn't hear, lazily responding, "It's already a mess. Even if we stay, there's nothing we can do. I'm hungry, let's eat first."
"Ugh, really…" Shimizu Kanon sighed in resignation.
She turned and bowed to Ayako and Coach Anzai, saying, "Ayako-senpai, Coach Anzai, I'm really sorry. Saku-chan is like this, please don't take it to heart. I'll make sure he's here on time for training tomorrow."
With that, she quickly turned and chased after Aoi Kunisaku.
Ayako watched the pair leave and shook her head, muttering, "Really, this year seems to be full of problem kids! They never make things easy."
Coach Anzai wasn't concerned with any of this.
He calmly sat there.
His fingers stroked his round, chubby chin, his eyes deep behind his glasses.
He first glanced at Rukawa Kaede, who was practicing shots alone.
"Rukawa Kaede is the new powerhouse."
Then, he turned his gaze to Sakuragi Hanamichi, who was still in a chokehold by Akagi.
"Sakuragi Hanamichi is also interesting. He's a potential prospect."
Finally, his eyes moved to Aoi Kunisaku, who was about to leave the gym.
"Aoi Kunisaku, huh…"
Coach Anzai pondered, the light glinting off his glasses. He silently thought, "A monster… truly a monster! I never expected someone with such talent. I wonder how strong he really is?"
Although Aoi Kunisaku had only shown one steal and one basket today, his unparalleled speed, far beyond normal, had already left a deep mark on Coach Anzai's mind.
The next day.
Shohoku High School, Academic Building.
1st Year, Class 6.
Huff… Huff… Huff…
Aoi Kunisaku lay on his desk, sound asleep, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm.
Beside him, Shimizu Kanon wore a helpless expression, looking at the teacher at the podium, who had an unkind look and a Mediterranean-style haircut. She didn't know what to do.
She felt like her energy spent on school was several times more than anyone else's.
Shimizu Kanon thought to herself, "Seriously, Saku-chan sleeps like this every day, yet he's always so lazy and tired-looking."
The day's classes quickly came to an end.
Shimizu Kanon brought Aoi Kunisaku to the basketball court right on time.
When people saw that it was Aoi Kunisaku and Shimizu Kanon, they all looked at them with strange expressions.
The power Aoi Kunisaku displayed yesterday still made everyone uneasy.
Akagi Takenori furrowed his brows when he saw Aoi Kunisaku, but he didn't say anything.
Though he disliked Aoi Kunisaku's lazy demeanor, since Coach Anzai didn't say anything yesterday, he had to hide his dissatisfaction.
Moreover, Aoi Kunisaku's displayed strength had earned his acknowledgment.
Although he wasn't sure of Aoi Kunisaku's true abilities, based on the speed he showed, he definitely wasn't weak.
Naturally, Akagi Takenori hoped for his team to get stronger.
While he was dissatisfied with Aoi Kunisaku, his main focus was still on achieving his dream of dominating nationwide.
Sakuragi Hanamichi's face immediately twisted into an annoyed expression upon seeing Aoi Kunisaku. He thought, "This guy thinks too highly of himself again."
On the other side, Rukawa Kaede's eyes were fixed on Aoi Kunisaku.
A battle intent stirred in his eyes.
Rukawa Kaede had clearly noticed Aoi Kunisaku's performance yesterday.
He had wanted to challenge him to a one-on-one, but Aoi Kunisaku had left too quickly for that.
Now that he saw him again, he wouldn't miss the opportunity.
Without caring about anyone else, Rukawa Kaede walked straight up to Aoi Kunisaku.
With a determined voice, he said, "Let's have a match!"
The crowd was stunned by Rukawa Kaede's challenge.
Everyone was shocked that Rukawa Kaede would take the initiative to challenge Aoi Kunisaku.
No one spoke up, only quietly observing how the situation would unfold.
They were eager to see how Aoi Kunisaku would respond to Rukawa Kaede's challenge.
At the same time, they also wanted to know how strong Aoi Kunisaku really was.
After all, they had only seen Aoi Kunisaku make one basket yesterday, not the entire process.
So, they were still somewhat doubtful and curious about his abilities.
Aoi Kunisaku glanced at Rukawa Kaede, then casually dug his little finger into his ear. He said indifferently, "I don't want to. You're too weak."
At this, the entire room was in shock.
The surrounding people looked at Aoi Kunisaku in disbelief.
They didn't expect him to say something like that.
To say such a thing to Rukawa Kaede, that was incredibly arrogant!
Who was Rukawa Kaede?!
He was known as a super rookie.
He was the MVP of junior high.
And yet, Aoi Kunisaku called him weak.
Everyone thought Aoi Kunisaku was getting way too cocky.
Rukawa Kaede was also infuriated by Aoi Kunisaku's dismissive attitude.
His face grew cold, and his eyes became more intense as he said, "Are you scared?"
Oh?
Aoi Kunisaku raised an eyebrow and looked at Rukawa Kaede, responding flatly, "Taunting me won't work."
He wasn't bothered by the provocation at all.
However, he seemed to think of something, and suddenly changed his tone. He said, "But… I'll play with you. Being taunted all the time is annoying."
Rukawa Kaede didn't care about Aoi Kunisaku's words. He only cared that Aoi Kunisaku accepted his challenge.
Shimizu Kanon looked at Aoi Kunisaku with some curiosity.
Based on her understanding of him, Aoi Kunisaku wouldn't normally care about such provocations.
But this time, her childhood friend seemed to be acting differently.
She blinked and thought deeply.
Just then, Ayako's voice reached her ears.
"Is this really okay?"
Ayako, looking at Rukawa Kaede and Aoi Kunisaku heading toward the court, said with some worry.
She understood Rukawa Kaede's character.
But she didn't know much about Aoi Kunisaku.
However, after meeting him yesterday, she could tell that Aoi Kunisaku wasn't someone to be taken lightly.
She was worried something bad might happen between the two.
Shimizu Kanon noticed Ayako's concern and spoke up, "It's fine. Saku-chan takes basketball very seriously!"
