Chapter 46: Chapter 46: My Heart Is Open

After a brief interaction with Amiya, the leader of Rhodes Island, Kal'tsit seemed to notice something about the way Steven was looking at Amiya. Quickly, she used the excuse of needing to discuss something with Amiya to send Outcast off with Steven and Gladiia for medical treatment.

Her behavior was very much like a protective mother cat guarding her kitten.

Steven wanted to clarify that he wasn't some kind of chaotic troublemaker who killed and burned indiscriminately, and he certainly wouldn't target the young girl just because of her peculiar title. After all, she hadn't provoked him in any way.

But considering it would be tricky to explain how he even knew about such things, Steven shrugged and decided to put the matter aside for now.

With Outcast, an experienced operator, leading the way, Steven didn't have to worry about getting lost in the massive and complex mobile ship. However, it also meant he missed out on opportunities to explore the place freely.

Thankfully, Outcast mentioned that after Gladiia's medical examination and a tour of their living quarters, they would be allowed to explore the areas of the ship open to them.

Steven could understand the caution. It was unlikely anyone would let an unfamiliar outsider roam freely in their private space.

After all, he had plenty of time to explore later.

"Since Dr. Kal'tsit specifically instructed us, there's no need to go through the usual formalities in the reception room. The medical bay is just ahead. After the examination for the young lady, I'll take you both to familiarize yourselves with the dormitory," Outcast explained.

After about ten minutes of walking, Outcast finally stopped in front of a door. Behind her, a wide, hospital-like corridor extended, lined with rooms resembling patient wards. Medical personnel in lab coats occasionally passed by, affirming the nature of the area.

"I've been curious—what exactly does your so-called Rhodes Island Pharmaceuticals do?" Steven paused as he prepared to enter the room with Gladiia, turning to ask the woman he was beginning to get acquainted with.

Despite their claim to be a pharmaceutical company, elements like Kal'tsit's strange pet, Outcast's firearm, and the mobile landship felt more akin to a covert organization than a simple business.

If anything, Steven felt it resembled something out of Resident Evil, like the Umbrella Corporation.

"Primarily, we aid the Infected, focusing on researching treatments for Oripathy and providing medical care for those afflicted," Outcast replied. The unfamiliar terms intrigued Steven, though Outcast's matter-of-fact tone implied she expected the question.

"I don't know much about the details—old folks like me don't overthink these things. If you're curious, ask Dr. Kal'tsit or Amiya directly, or consult PRTS, our AI assistant. I'm sure it'll be happy to explain. Just don't burden an old-timer like me with it," she said, waving off further questions with a hint of impatience.

Seeing no way to press further, Steven shrugged and led Gladiia into the alcohol-scented medical room.

Before Steven could push the door open, it flew outward. A brown-haired girl darted past him, clutching a bottle reeking of alcohol between her teeth.

The girl moved quickly, but Steven wasn't caught off guard. As he dodged her, he noted her dog-like ears and the bottle she carried. Just as he began to process the situation, a strange hammer-like object came hurtling toward him.

"Ceobe! How many times have I told you not to drink the medical alcohol? Do you want me to knock out your teeth so you can't eat your favorite honey cakes anymore?" a voice shouted, chasing after the thrown hammer.

Reacting instinctively, Steven caught the hammer mid-air. The throw was powerful, though not particularly precise.

"Miss, before you chase down that girl, shouldn't you apologize for almost hitting me?" Steven said calmly, addressing the green-haired girl emerging from the medical bay.

"Huh?" The green-haired girl froze upon realizing someone was at the door. Quickly, an apologetic expression replaced her shock.

"I'm so sorry! I didn't expect anyone to be standing outside the medical bay. This is usually a break time. My apologies!" she said, bowing repeatedly.

Seeing her sincerity, Steven decided not to press the issue further. While the incident wasn't entirely her fault, it was also partly due to his failure to knock before entering.

So, with the hammer in one hand, Steven extended his other hand toward her, palm up.

"Compensation, and I'll forgive you," he said matter-of-factly.

"W-what?"

"For the mental and potential physical distress. You can decide how much."

Steven's expression was calm, showing no signs of leniency, even though the girl was beautiful. Right was right, and she needed to take responsibility.

He's not being petty, he's just being fair.
