Chapter 20:
Chapter 20: Okay, Definitely:
“Qin Yi?”
Hearing the name, Wang Zhenxing was momentarily surprised. Then, pretending to be delighted, he said, “Xiao Yi, it’s been so long since I heard from you! Your mother will be thrilled to know you’re okay!”
“Uncle Wang, do you know what my mother is doing these days? Does she work night shifts? I tried calling her last night, but she didn’t answer,” Qin Yi asked.
The mention of last night made Wang Zhenxing recall the phone ringing while he was at Xu Yourou’s place. She had hung up without answering. So, that call had been from Qin Yi.
“Your mother was running a fruit shop, but it closed down, and now she’s unemployed,” Wang replied.
“Then why is she so busy that she doesn’t even answer her phone at night?” Qin Yi asked, puzzled.
Suppressing a chuckle, Wang Zhenxing thought, “Of course, I know why she didn’t answer. But how could I tell you that?”
“She’s busy at night? That’s unlikely. She lives alone—what could she be busy with? It was probably because the call came from an unknown number,” Wang Zhenxing said casually.
“That makes sense,” Qin Yi said, his tone more relaxed. “Thank you, Uncle Wang, for taking care of my mom all this time. I’m deeply grateful.”
Wang glanced at the bedroom, where Xu Yourou was still asleep, and replied with a smile, “We’re family, Xiao Yi. No need for thanks.”
“Uncle Wang, you’ve been single for so long. Isn’t it time you found someone? When can I attend your wedding?” Qin Yi asked, his voice filled with genuine concern.
“There’s too much work at the company, leaving no time for romance. Besides, I’m almost 40 now. Finding the right person gets harder with age,” Wang Zhenxing said with a feigned sigh.
“Love happens when the time is right. I believe you’ll meet someone special, Uncle Wang,” Qin Yi said sincerely.
“Thank you for the encouragement,” Wang Zhenxing replied with a smile.
Then Qin Yi hesitated for a moment before asking, “By the way, Uncle Wang, does my mother have… any personal feelings for someone?”
“Oh? Xiao Yi, are you hoping your mom finds you a stepfather?” Wang Zhenxing teased, his tone light.
“Of course not!” Qin Yi’s voice darkened immediately.
Since childhood, he had strongly resisted the idea of his mother remarrying.
Stepping into the living room to avoid disturbing Xu Yourou, Wang Zhenxing responded, “I just help her out with daily things. I visit occasionally to fix light bulbs, faucets, or even clear sewers. But when it comes to her personal feelings, I wouldn’t know. That’s not something I can get involved in.”
There was a brief silence on the other end before Qin Yi changed the topic. “Uncle Wang, I’m heading back to Qingling soon. I need to settle some debts with my enemies. When the time comes, I hope you’ll help me.”
Suppressing a sneer, Wang Zhenxing thought, How bold of you to ask me, with my mere billion-dollar company, to fight against those with tens of billions.
“Okay, definitely,” Wang replied smoothly.
“Also, Uncle Wang, please keep my return to Qingling a secret for now. Don’t even tell my mother—I want to surprise her,” Qin Yi said earnestly.
“Of course,” Wang agreed, his tone reassuring.
After the call ended, Wang Zhenxing sat in thought.
According to the system’s information, Qin Yi shouldn’t have left the mountain so soon. Why has he suddenly decided to return to Qingling?
Connecting to the system, Wang Zhenxing inquired, “Why is the protagonist back earlier than expected?”
[The host’s influence altered the plot, and the protagonist’s luck is now correcting it, which caused his earlier return.]
“I see,” Wang muttered, understanding the situation.
At this moment, he heard movement from the bedroom. Xu Yourou had woken up.
…
Returning to the bedroom, Wang Zhenxing met her gaze. The atmosphere was awkward at first.
“This is all my fault,” Wang Zhenxing said, breaking the silence, pretending to feel guilty.
“No, it’s not just you,” Xu Yourou replied softly, shaking her head. This wasn’t something that could happen with just one person’s actions.
She looked at him, her eyes filled with complex emotions. She wanted to know how he intended to handle their relationship.
For her, the ideal scenario would be to walk hand in hand with him, openly and without shame. But she also knew that her circumstances didn’t quite match his.
Wang was a wealthy and handsome businessman, while she felt inadequate in comparison.
“I just got a call from Xiao Yi,” Wang said, his tone calm.
“Xiao Yi called you?” Xu was surprised.
“Not only me. He called you too. That call you hung up on last night? That was him.”
Her face turned red with embarrassment. Thank goodness I didn’t answer that call! she thought.
“He mentioned that he’ll return to Qingling soon. He also asked about your personal life. I told him I didn’t know much. But from his tone, it’s clear he’s against the idea of you finding a stepfather,” Wang Zhenxing continued.
“Xiao Yi’s always been like this. He’s strongly opposed to it. As his mother, there’s not much I can do,” Xu sighed. Then, she added with a pleading look, “Let’s keep… whatever this is… a secret for now.”
“Keep it a secret? But my conscience feels uneasy about it,” Wang Zhenxing said, feigning inner turmoil.
“You’re a good man. This is my problem. Don’t blame yourself,” Xu reassured him.
“But what if Xiao Yi finds out?” Wang Zhenxing asked, his tone full of mock concern.
“If you don’t tell and I don’t tell, how will he ever know?” she replied.
“There’s no such thing as an airtight secret. If he finds out, I’m worried he might get violent. What if he beats me to death?” Wang Zhenxing said with exaggerated worry.
Xu laughed lightly. “That’s impossible!”
“Still, it’s better to be cautious. If Xiao Yi ever dares to be rude to you, I’ll stop him—even if it costs me everything,” she said with deep emotion.
Hearing her vow, Wang Zhenxing felt reassured. Looks like this amulet is solid.
“It’s time for breakfast. What do you want me to make for you?” she asked tenderly.
“No rush. I’m the boss—who’s going to deduct my wages for being late?” he replied with a playful grin.
Rolling her eyes, she gave him a charming look.
…
Zhenxing Group. CEO’s Office.
Lin Keqing stood in the office, puzzled. The boss was usually at work before her, yet his chair remained empty.
She waited for him to arrive so he could assign her tasks, but as time passed, boredom crept in. To pass the time, she decided to do some yoga.
Lin Keqing had always been diligent about maintaining her figure, and yoga was a regular part of her routine back in college. However, her work attire made some poses difficult, and eventually, her movements caused her clothes to tear slightly.
Sighing, she locked the office door and quickly changed into her spare outfit.
Just as she was in the middle of changing, the office door opened.
It was Wang Zhenxing, who used his fingerprint to unlock the door.
They froze, staring at each other in shock.
Lin Keqing didn’t scream, but the situation was undeniably awkward.
Maintaining a serious expression, Wang Zhenxing looked around the office briefly, then closed the door and stepped outside.
Was this because of his good luck?
Wang Zhenxing wondered with amusement as he waited outside.
