Chapter 44: One Of Those Nights
Eren slumped deeper into the couch, one hand covering his face while the other rested on Erika's tiny back. The 11-month-old had officially conquered his chest, sprawled out like a starfish, snoring softly with a fist tangled in his shirt.
"Mika... would you mind scooting over a bit? My legs have been dead for, like, twenty minutes now..."
Mikasa, who was very much sitting on his lap, casually dipped a piece of grilled chicken into a tub of vanilla ice cream. Instead of moving, she just wiggled a bit closer, completely ignoring his suffering.
Eren exhaled through his nose. "God... you've gotten heavier." He placed a hand on her belly, rubbing it absentmindedly. "These two sure are teasing my beloved wife, aren't they?"
"Mmhm," she hummed, too busy savoring the unholy food combination to pay him any real attention.
Eren squinted at her. "The Love of my life. What the actual fuck are you eating?"
She licked some melted ice cream off her finger. "Chicken and vanilla ice cream."
He stared at her, horrified. "Why?"
She blinked at him, as if the answer was obvious. "Because it tastes good?"
Eren glanced at the tub of ice cream. Then at the chicken. Then back at her. "My love. That is a war crime."
She just smirked, picking up another piece and dunking it right in. "You wanna try?"
Eren leaned his head back against the couch. "No."
"You sure?" She wiggled the ice-cream-covered chicken dangerously close to his mouth.
"I would literally rather die."
She shrugged and took a bite. "Your loss."
Eren groaned, but before he could argue further, Erika shifted against his chest, letting out a tiny, sleepy whimper. Instantly, his attention snapped back to her, and his whole demeanor softened. He adjusted his grip, pressing a kiss against the top of her head.
Mikasa watched, smiling softly. "Ereh..."
"Hm?"
"Wanna play a little game?"
Eren blinked, caught off guard, as Mikasa set the now thankfully empty plates aside. Before he could respond, she wrapped her arms around his neck, her smirk hinting at mischief.
"What?" Eren muttered, raising a brow as Mikasa guided his hand down to her belly, her fingers tracing over his knuckles.
"It's a guessing game," she said, her voice laced with amusement.
He exhaled through his nose, intrigued but skeptical. "Go on."
"We'll guess the gender of our babies. Whoever loses has to grant the winner two wishes." She tilted her head, eyes gleaming. "Simple, right?"
Eren sighed, shaking his head. "What kind of game is that?"
Mikasa's grin widened. "Oh? So my fearsome husband, wielder of such vicious titans, is afraid of a little game?"
A smirk tugged at Eren's lips. He slid his hand from her belly up to her waist, pulling her closer until their noses nearly touched.
"You're on."
Mikasa smirked, brushing her fingers through Eren's hair as she leaned closer. "One boy, one girl. My guess is that." she said confidently.
Eren scoffed. "Nope. Two boys," he said without hesitation, his other hand resting against her waist.
Mikasa raised a brow. "Two boys?"
Mikasa chuckled, shaking her head. "Ereh... There's no way we'd get two boys."
Eren smirked. "We'll see."
She leaned into his chest, sighing softly as his fingers traced slow circles over her stomach. "Mm, we will."
Silence enveloped the room for quiet a while, a peaceful stillness filling the space between them. Mikasa looked up at Eren, her gaze softening as she noticed him fast asleep, his head resting awkwardly against the back of the sofa. A small trail of drool escaped the corner of his mouth, and she couldn't help but smile.
She gently shifted Erika in her arms, carefully standing up, careful not to disturb Eren before placing Erika back in her crib. Mikasa tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, her eyes lingering on Eren's relaxed face. Despite the chaos of their day, moments like this made everything feel right.
Mikasa quietly moved to the window, the moonlight spilling across the room. Her thoughts wandered as she gazed out at the world beyond, her heart heavy with gratitude for this quiet, stolen peace.
She slowly advanced towards Eren, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Ah..." he yelped, his eyes flickering open just enough to catch sight of her, a soft smile tugging at her lips. He blinked in confusion before she slowly pulled him up, her voice gentle. "Ereh... Come..."
He rubbed his eyes sleepily, too tired to fully process what was happening, but instinctively letting her guide him to the bedroom. As she helped him lay down on the mattress, he barely stirred, still caught in the haze of sleep. Mikasa followed, a soft sigh escaping her as she sank beside him, feeling the weight of the day settle on her tired limbs.
The room was quiet, save for the faint sounds of their breathing, and they both lay still for a moment. Mikasa's eyes traced the stars visible through the window, their ethereal glow casting a soft light across the room, contrasting the deep blackness of the night.
"Mmmm..." Eren groaned in his sleep, his body moving closer to hers, his face nuzzling into her shoulder. He placed one hand on her cheek, with his leg draped over her, the warmth of his touch grounding her in the moment.
Mikasa smiled, her heart swelling with love as she listened to his sleepy murmurs—soft words that made him seem like a child again, vulnerable and peaceful in his sleep.
She brushed a strand of hair away from his face, gazing at him with tenderness. Eren's grip on her tightened slightly as he nestled closer, still asleep, and Mikasa's smile deepened.
"I wish... There was a world... Where no titans existed... And it was just the both of us... Living long peaceful lives... Together... Like this."
And with that, Mikasa closed her eyes, letting the silence of the night embrace them both.
