Chapter 28 - Monster of the Borderlands (8)
‘I knew it roughly, but it’s really true. It really… looks just like people living their lives.’
The concept of this game was that various races existed in each civilization, but even among different species, there were some commonalities.
The city of Hobgoblins unfolding before my eyes was no exception.
Countless demon races were tilling fields, tending livestock, and doing business to make a living. Taking care of families and rejoicing or lamenting over a daily drink of alcohol was also a familiar scene.
From the need to eat and survive to building power and strength through competition. It’s no different from humans. After all, they were all intelligent beings of a similar level.
Still, this is the first proper civilization I’ve gotten to see since falling into this world.
I was mesmerized by the sight, which was on a completely different level from watching through a monitor, and imprinted it in my mind.
Someday, my soldiers will invade this place.
“This is the most developed city in this area. Since Lord Lumon also told me to help you, if you need anything, just say so.”
“Thank you.”
Seeing my reaction, perhaps thinking I was a country bumpkin amazed by the big city, Dune, the Hobgoblin knight assigned by Lumon, smirked.
Since he said to let him know if I needed anything, I planned to take advantage of it as much as possible.
I wanted to see how they would react when my main body moved.
“As planned, we’ll attack the Orc territory.”
Leaving the avatar to continue acting as a Hobgoblin, I opened my eyes in my main body and moved the main force that had completed its reorganization perfectly.
It wasn’t just reorganization; with numerous newly added troop types deployed, it was reborn to a new level.
“From what I’ve learned, Orc Baron Zieg is almost the only friendly ruler in this area with Hobgoblin Count Ludas.”
“Then, do you plan to eliminate him to pressure the Hobgoblin Count?”
“They already think some kind of force is attacking them. We need to fan those flames.”
As Seira said, I intended to gain practical benefits and also put psychological pressure on the enemies.
It didn’t matter now even if they felt anxious and sent troops. The moment I crush Orc Baron Zieg, Hobgoblin Count Ludas will be left with only troublesome opponents around him.
What I’m most worried about is all the forces in the area uniting to try to kill me first.
As long as that doesn’t happen, I will never lose.
“The occupied city has already been transformed into a nest, and we’re expanding our territory using it as a base. Seira, you lead the newly organized legion and strike the Orcs.”
“Yes.”
Another war begins. But Seira, who took on the role of vanguard general, rather seemed pleased as she lifted the corners of her mouth.
The territory of the Orc Baron we’re targeting this time is composed of about 50 districts, ruling an area slightly smaller than mine now.
I thought I could easily sweep them away if I mobilized all the troops I had.
* * *
“Huh?”
In the eastern forest of the territory. The Orc hunters hunting demonic beasts there discovered something strange.
Along with traces of fierce battles, only faint traces of demonic beasts being hunted remained.
“Who could it be? Not a single piece left.”
“Judging by the fresh footprints, it looks like an Augu. Damn, we lost a good prey.”
One of the Orcs, grumbling about what kind of being had beaten them to their prey, guessed what the hunted demonic beast might have been based on the footprints.
“Really? Then what are all these?”
Just then, his companion called him over. The one with extensive knowledge about demonic beasts puffed up his chest and headed to where his companion called.
“Th-these are…”
But the footprints there were something even the experienced hunter had never seen before.
In appearance, they were very similar to the footprints of insect-type demonic beasts, but the problem was their number.
The traces densely imprinted all over the area were impossible to count, let alone guess how many demonic beasts had made them.
“Come to think of it, didn’t you hear a rumor? That a city ruled by Hobgoblins to the north was destroyed by an attack of demonic beasts. They said those demonic beasts looked like strange insects too.”
“You think they’d come all the way here? There’s plenty to eat around there, no way that would happen.”
He chuckled at his companion’s serious muttering.
It didn’t make sense common sense-wise. Even if it was true that demonic beasts attacked a city, why would they come all the way here when there’s plenty to eat around there?
Unless they were deliberately planning to ‘attack’ this place, there was no possibility they would ignore the numerous forests and demonic beasts in between to come here.
“Let’s head back for today since we’ve wasted our time.”
Giving up on a detailed investigation, they gathered their tools and turned around. It was to return to their village.
“…Huh?”
But none of them noticed the numerous monsters that had silently and stealthily surrounded them.
These ‘insects’ covered in black carapaces all over their bodies had already surrounded them for a long time, moving so quietly and stealthily that it was hard to believe they were living creatures.
“Ugh, uwaaaaah!”
The monsters pounced on them in an instant. It was impossible for mere hunters, not heavily armed warriors, to resist against monsters that outnumbered them dozens of times over.
Poisonous stingers that flew in at once pierced through the hunters’ bodies, and swung forelegs struck down their bodies.
“Kuhek..”
He fell to the ground as his companions were being killed off.
It wasn’t that he was lucky enough to survive. The enemies simply didn’t touch him alone.
“Hii, hiiiek!”
Realizing in a split second that all his companions had turned into minced meat, he turned pale seeing the enemies filling his surroundings.
And towards him, the horde of monsters split in half, and someone slowly walked out. It was someone smaller than him, an ordinary Orc, holding a spear in one hand.
“If you tell us everything you know, you won’t die painfully.”
The black mask on the face melted away, revealing the beautiful face of a vampire underneath.
He had no choice.
“After interrogating the prisoner, it seems the only place that can be called a proper castle is where the Baron lives. All the villages spread across the area are only at the level of having wooden fences or earthen fortifications.”
“Then we can sweep them all away at once.”
Seira had cruelly tortured the prisoner to extract information, and that information was naturally transmitted to the Queen connected through the hive mind.
Realizing that true to the northern Orcs, they lived nomadically and agriculturally rather than building huge castles, the Queen judged there was nothing more to hesitate about.
“Seira, you lead the largest force and attack the biggest village. The other forces will split up and simultaneously attack the 9 villages we’ve targeted.”
Based on the information obtained in advance about the enemies, the Queen judged there was no need to lead all these soldiers to conquer one by one.
Even if the forces are split up countless times, they still outnumber the Orcs in the villages by several times.
With this number, she thought it would be more advantageous to strike the enemies all at once to prevent them from properly rallying.
‘I don’t even need a minimap.’
The Queen, after giving her orders, closed her eyes in satisfaction and controlled the hive mind.
With the help of the huge auxiliary brain, the Queen could command the entire army as if it were one body, and unlike in the game, she could overlook the overall situation at a glance without needing a minimap.
The 9 split forces didn’t even need to communicate with each other. They could share and adjust to each other’s situations in real-time.
“Wh-what is that? There are so many!”
“Monsters are swarming from the forest!”
There was no hesitation. The Queen, who had already made the northern forest her perfect sphere of influence, initiated combat as soon as each unit was in position.
It was at dusk, when the Orcs in the villages were finishing their daily work and about to go home to have dinner with their families.
“Everyone get out quickly!”
“Take up arms. They’re trying to climb over the walls!”
The Orc villages were thrown into chaos. Everyone who could fight, regardless of age or gender, grabbed weapons and rushed out.
To protect their homes, families, and society.
They fought desperately to defend the line under the command of the warriors. It was already too late to run away, and even if they abandoned everything and fled, they would only become refugees.
[The newly created throwing troops are preparing for battle]
“Let’s see…”
However, for the Queen, this moment was just a test bed to try out the power of her newly created soldiers.
While the common soldiers, mass-produced and operated with cheap resources, clung to the walls, the assault troops and throwing troops with their massive bodies appeared from behind.
From the ends of the long bodies of the throwing troops firmly planted on the ground, wriggling lumps of flesh full of poison were spewed out.
Their role was to grab these with the pincers at their tails and hurl them with all their might into the distance.
