Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Doctor Gero (1)
"Damn it... Mister Tao Pai Pai, what are you doing!?"
A dark-skinned man gritted his teeth, pointing his revolver at the uninvited guest.

Unfortunately, his attempt at intimidation was a failure.
As for an attack? No point in even thinking about it.
The man before him had literally crushed through security to get here, walking casually with his hands behind his back.
So it's easy to understand his contempt for them, as well as Black's hesitation to attack.
That's also why Tao Pai Pai didn't immediately respond to the speakers he deemed uninteresting.
He simply sketched a contemptuous smile, directed as much at the man standing before him as at the one sitting behind the desk.
"What do you think?" he said, after casually dodging a revolver bullet fired by Commander Red.
A despicable attack, since it came from under the desk.
"W... Who... Grrr..."
"Sorry... I can't hear properly what you're babbling about."
Despite the mercenary's mocking tone, Commander Red managed to control himself somewhat and continued:
"Who had the guts to pay you for my head?" he finally blurted out in one go.
"Hrm hrm... haha..."
Unfortunately, he didn't get the answer he hoped for.
Tao Pai Pai first tried to hold back his mocking laughter, but his attempt to preserve some martial dignity failed.
He burst out laughing without restraint, openly mocking his target.
This lasted about ten seconds before he finally regained his composure.
Yet the tense atmosphere didn't disappear.
On the contrary — Tao Pai Pai's mockery only heightened the tension between him and the duo facing him.
"As a professional, I'm forbidden from revealing my client's identity. But..."
The smile on his face widened further, as if he was already savoring what was to come.
"B... But what? You gonna explain yourself?"
Staff Officer Black broke his silence again, as the conversation seemed to be stalling.
"But since my target is destined to die anyway, then..."
Tao Pai Pai briefly mentioned his agreement with Gorou, a contract clearly stating his desire to see Commander Red die and to take over his criminal organization.
But before he could finish, a shocking event occurred right in front of him.
"W... What... B... Black?"
Red had just been betrayed by his best man and assistant: Staff Officer Black.
The latter had shot him in the back.
"Sorry... but I prefer to switch sides," he said without a trace of remorse.
The mocking mercenary was first surprised by this act, then finally showed a satisfied expression.
"You're surrendering, is that it?"
To Tao Pai Pai's question, Black nodded straightforwardly.
"Indeed. And I plan to help with the power transition in place, to facilitate your mission, Sir."
Although Tao Pai Pai had first thought of eliminating him after his betrayal, he decided against it.
The man before him had just accelerated his mission by several days.
'It would be a pain to go find each leader of this organization to "discuss nicely" with them.'
That was the killer's mental conclusion.
"Excellent. In that case, call this number and inform him of your organization's submission to Gorou."
After these words, Tao Pai Pai didn't spare another glance at the Red Ribbon Army man.
He ripped out a pillar from the room and left in the same absurd manner as when he arrived.
BOOM — the sound barrier had just been broken.
"... D... Damn... I crawled on the ground for years waiting for a perfect opportunity... and this guy comes out of nowhere..."
Staff Officer Black was furious with himself and with this absurd situation, which he never could have anticipated.
You have to understand that Staff Officer Black is an extremely competent and ambitious individual.
He had already planned to seize the organization at a strategic moment... but he'd been outmaneuvered by Gorou.
A situation difficult to imagine, but not illogical.
"All is not lost... With a bit of luck, this guy will be another idiot like Red."
...
"Indeed, you bring me good news."
Gorou sketched a wide satisfied smile, as his eyes filled with anticipation.
Barely 24 hours had passed since his meeting with the Brief family.
And here he was already receiving excellent news from the former director of Red Pharmaceuticals, whom he had hypnotized as soon as he arrived in West City.
Tao Pai Pai had succeeded.
He had completed his mission in less than a month, exactly as planned.
"He's an efficient man..."
Gorou felt almost reluctant about the idea of cutting all future cooperation with him... but that's how it is.
They're simply incompatible and his natural talent is weak.
Especially since he's not as essential as Doctor Gero.
"I've even already finished the basics of the New Men project, and construction of the time chamber prototype has been able to advance."
The Time Chamber and New Men...
These are the two projects that will allow Gorou to get his hands on Earth and Namek — in just a few months.
The first relies on technology that Gorou would never have considered exploring in the DxD universe.
He once judged it far too dangerous.
Why such hesitation, when he literally traveled between two worlds?
Because time is a concept too unstable and too risky to manipulate without precautions.
Many examples haunt Gorou's mind, having always dissuaded him from touching this domain, especially in a universe as fragile as DxD's.
For example? Doctor Paradox, from the Ben 10 cartoon.
This man was literally thrown to the Dawn of Time of his universe because of a failed experiment.
Sure, he acquired extraordinary powers and immortality, thanks to exceptional mental strength for a human...
But his best friend wasn't so lucky.
He became an anomaly in space-time.
Doctor Paradox himself admitted that he felt like he was "holding eternity" with bare hands to prevent it from moving.
When another person tried to do the same, even for just an instant... he became an old man.
And that's not all.
Another example? Okabe Rintarou, from the Steins;Gate manga.
Because of his lack of knowledge, he got himself into temporal trouble.
All of this had made Gorou extremely wary of any form of temporal manipulation.
But today... things are different.
He has a Kaioshin of Time at hand, capable of repairing his mistakes in case of failure, and he himself has progressed a lot, notably thanks to the [Great Sage]'s teaching.
'Especially since I'm not starting from nothing. I have Doctor Omori's data.'
Doctor Omori is an extremely brilliant scientist, whose ambition was to create a time travel machine.
Unfortunately, the one he developed can only freeze time for a maximum of 50 seconds.
Gorou used his company's resources to recover the plans for this machine, via a transaction with the East City government.
This is what allowed him to start designing a Time Chamber prototype.
As for the New Men project?
It's the evolution and popularization — of the project that gave birth to Alpha and the others, in the DxD universe.
Imagine... a living weapon: a Saiyan whose DNA has been purified of any "weak" element from his family tree, combined with the best human genes from Earth.
Literally, a version 2.0 of Gohan.
'The New Men project has frightening potential... but if Doctor Gero can really provide an infinite energy source to my future army...'
Gorou left the laboratory with rapid steps.
He didn't want to wait anymore.
It was time to integrate the mad scientist within the Red Ribbon Army base under his command.
If Gorou and Gero could really exploit the effects of the Animorphaline pill with the goal of creating genetically perfect Saiyan half-humans, possessing unlimited energy...
"Earth and Namek will only be the beginning..."
