Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Doctor Gero (2)

In a dimly lit laboratory, illuminated only by the glow of screens and other machines.

There was an elderly man who seemed extremely busy using an imposingly large computer.

He is Doctor Gero.

A scientist whose talent rivals that of Bulma or Doctor Brief in several aspects.

"Damn it, how could that idiot die now?"

The cause of his irritation isn't a failed experiment or his hatred toward Goku, since he doesn't even know the young Saiyan at this time.

The reason for his anger is the loss of his main investor or financial backer, alias Commander Red.

As a scientist conducting... obscure research, Doctor Gero can't obtain funding from the government like Doctor Brief and Omori.

He can only turn to illegal means.

A situation his grandson would know later, but that's still far in the future.

Anyway, the leader of the Red Ribbon Army has changed.

This change announces reforms.

'If he investigates the finances I've been using then...'

Unconsciously, he turned his gaze toward capsules filled with an unknown green liquid.

Apart from the sci-fi aspect of the scene, there are writings on the glass of an empty capsule:

[Cyborg Number 8: Failure]

Doctor Gero had already begun creating cyborgs long before his unfortunate encounter with Goku.

Yet he had never managed to obtain a truly satisfactory result from his point of view.

An example is the empty capsule in his laboratory.

Cyborg Number 8 possesses all the elements that would give it the title of perfect weapon if mass-produced.

However, it has too gentle a personality.

Doctor Gero judged it as a failure, but he still gave it to the Red Ribbon Army as a sample of his research.

All this seems normal, right?

A scientist showing the progress of his work to his investors to obtain more funds and improve the final result.

The problem here is that Gero deceived Commander Red about the production cost, since he didn't want to stay focused on improving Cyborg 8.

He wanted something more.

"I need to quickly falsify the data concerning expenses and hide my current work, just in case."

Thus, Chief of Staff Black isn't the only man within the Red Ribbon Army harboring hidden ambitions.

Besides him and Doctor Gero, there's also Colonel Violet with her own ambitions.

Unfortunately for the deceased Commander Red, there was only General Blue as a very competent and loyal person to him.

Rumbling.

The moment Doctor Gero was able to finish the digital cleanup, after discovering the change of leadership within the Red Ribbon Army...

The sound of the mechanical door opens slowly.

Two people entered the laboratory after the loud noise.

The first was a familiar face to the old man, but the second is completely unknown to him.

The individual has brown hair and an enviable height compared to his former chief.

If Gero puts aside his height and his appearance worthy of the word "handsome," he had a special gleam in his eyes when looking at his work.

An approving look.

It was as if he was observing the work of an inferior colleague.

Arrogant.

That's the first impression Gero had of Gorou Hyoudou.

Yet the young man's action put the old scientist somewhat on the defensive.

Why is he wary of a young man who could be his son's age?

The individual behind Gorou is the most influential right-hand man within the Red Ribbon Army, after Red himself.

It didn't take much information for Gero to connect the dots, since the Chief of Staff clearly seems to be trying to win the young man's favor.

'Is he an individual favored by the new chief? Or is he my replacement?'

Several questions, but no clear answers.

At this stage, he could only theorize.

"Hello, I presume you are Doctor Gero, aren't you?" he said, after extending his arm for a handshake.

Even though Gorou phrases it as a question, after a formal greeting, his words about the old man sound like a fact.

Gero looks for a moment toward Gorou and his extended hand, but he ends up shaking it with clear hesitation.

"Hello... and yes, I am indeed Doctor Gero."

The slightly gruff voice of the old man was met with a slight smile from his interlocutor.

The atmosphere became slightly strange as the two men kept their gaze on each other.

"I'd like some time alone with Mr. Gero, could I have it?" At the polite request phrased as a question, Officer Black nodded and moved away.

Chief of Staff Black didn't understand the subtlety behind the situation before him, nor the magnitude this day would have for his universe.

He left the laboratory without knowing that the fate of Universe 7, and potentially more, had been sealed after his departure.

Doctor Gero had been hypnotized.

...

"You are an impressive person for your age."

A few hours had passed after Officer Black's departure from the laboratory.

Gorou had had a friendly discussion with Doctor Gero about the direction of the Red Ribbon Army.

Gero wasn't aware, but he was under Gorou's hypnosis.

The command wasn't total control, since it could involuntarily restrain the scientist's potential.

The hypnosis pushes the scientist to see Gorou in a positive light, but also to possess no harmful intentions toward him.

That's why they were able to spend a few hours discussing without problems, whereas Black had mentioned the old scientist's execrable personality.

"I return the compliment. Your work on human body evolution through machines is really very relevant."

Gorou's words are sincere.

This casual conversation was able to inspire him about various improvements he could undertake on his own robot within his Hoi-Poi capsule.

"Haha, happy that this old man's words could enlighten a talented young scientist," he said in good humor.

'I'd really like to stay here, but...'

He's not a full-time scientist.

Gorou must rejoin Officer Black, since he has organized a meeting with the Red Ribbon Army's high-ranking officers.

Currently, he's the official leader, but...

'I still need to establish my reign and find a crystal ball in stone state to test the effectiveness of my time chamber...'

Sometimes he finds himself regretting his time tinkering in his garage in peace.
