Chapter 6: chapter 6:the team's beginnings

The island was cloaked in mist when she arrived.

Raven stood at the edge of the boat, her pale fingers clutching the wooden railing as if it were the last thread tying her to the world she knew. The salty scent of the sea mingled with the wild aroma of olives, while a strange breeze carried whispers she couldn't yet understand.

"You'll find what you need here."

Supergirl stood behind her, her warm hands resting on Raven's shoulders. Raven didn't know how to thank her—how to express that strange blend of gratitude and fear that had coursed through her veins since leaving Metropolis. All she could do was tighten her grip on her small bag, the one holding her mother's only book, handwritten by Arella between tears before she vanished.

"Will I be... restrained here?" Raven asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Kara laughed, her voice warm like the morning sun. "Themyscira is not a prison. It's a home—for those who had none."

There was no time to reply, for what met them at the bend made Raven freeze in place.

Diana.

The Queen of the Amazons wasn't wearing her royal armor, but simple leather pants and a white shirt. Her long black hair danced with the wind. But even without her crown, without the armor, her presence filled the space like thunder before a storm.

"Welcome, Raven," Diana said as if she had known her for years. "We've prepared a special place for you."

Her extended hand waited, but Raven couldn't move. Something in her chest clenched, afraid of the touch—afraid that it might uncover all her hidden truths. Perhaps it was shame, or perhaps fear that such a great woman would see how broken she was inside.

But Diana didn't wait. Her confident step closed the distance, and her warm fingers wrapped gently around Raven's trembling hand.

"Come."

---

The room resembled a honeycomb made of white marble, its high windows overlooking the sea from three sides. A bed of smooth stone, a table with ceramic vessels, and in the corner, a large mirror with a frame of ancient gold.

"This... is too much," Raven whispered as she turned slowly, her shadow dancing on the walls.

Diana stood at the door, her eyes watching with curiosity. "The Amazons believe beauty helps the soul to heal."

"I'm not…"

"Beautiful?" Diana cut in with a smile. "Everyone who comes here says the same thing. But beauty isn't what you see in the mirror. It's what is planted in the heart."

She pointed toward the window, where olive trees swayed in the wind. "Tomorrow we begin training at the Tree of the Hesperides. It remembers all who've passed through here... even Ben."

His name stirred something strange in Raven's chest. She remembered how that great man had stood before her and told her she was more than just a demon's daughter.

"He... he was here?"

Diana's laugh filled the room. "His days here were... unforgettable. The Amazons still talk about how he turned the training tree into an ice sculpture—by accident."

In that moment, Raven felt something unfamiliar... something like hope.

---

At Metropolis High School, the day was as lively as ever. Kyle and Wally were arguing over a math assignment while Jon tried to mediate.

"You can't solve it that way!" Kyle said, pointing at Wally's notebook.

"Why not? The answer is right!" Wally responded innocently.

Jon stepped in calmly. "But the method is wrong, Wally. The professor will deduct points."

In the corner, Damian stared out the window, his face brooding. Batman had forced him to stay in school, and now he felt like a prisoner while the world needed him.

"When do we stop pretending to be normal students?" Damian muttered to himself.

Kyle overheard and walked over. "You're not the only one who feels that way. But Batman is right. Trigon's monsters could return at any moment, and we're the first line of defense."

Damian turned to him, his eyes glowing with a spark of defiance. "I'm not part of your team."

"You will be," Jon said as he approached. "Remember when we were kids and formed a team? We didn't exactly like each other at first."

"Because you were an annoying child," Damian replied seriously.

Kyle laughed. "And now you're the annoying teenager."

Even Damian couldn't suppress the tiniest hint of a smile.

---

Three months later, Raven returned to school—but she wasn't the same girl anymore.

The change was clear:

Her walk was more confident.

Her eyes no longer avoided contact.

Even her clothes were lighter, with touches of blue.

"Raven?" Wally was the first to see her, nearly falling out of his chair. "Whoa! You look... different!"

Jon smiled. "Stronger."

"Diana told me something important," Raven said in a quiet but firm voice. "We'll be a temporary team to face Trigon's monsters."

Damian jumped up. "What? No one consulted me on this!"

"Batman approved it," Raven said simply.

Damian fell silent, then sat back down, clearly annoyed.

"Don't worry," Kyle said, patting Damian's shoulder. "We'll be the best team in this city."

---

They all sat in an old, abandoned storage room at school around a battered table, sunlight streaming through the cracked upper window. Raven placed her hands on the table, her violet eyes shining with seriousness.

"So it's official now," Kyle said, looking around. "A team to confront the Trigon threat."

"Just a temporary team," Damian corrected quickly, though without his usual edge.

"But how will we actually operate?" Wally jumped up, knocking over his chair. "Are we just going to sit and wait for more monsters to show up?"

Raven smiled—for the first time since her return. "We don't have to wait." She raised her hand, dark energy laced with white strands swirling around her fingers. "In Themyscira, I learned how to track Trigon's energy... even in its faintest traces."

"Every summoning requires a ritual," she explained, drawing a glowing demonic symbol in the air. "And these rituals leave behind an energy trail we can follow. If we find the cultists before they finish..."

"We can stop the monsters from appearing at all!" Jon finished with wide eyes.

Kyle clapped his hands excitedly. "That means we save lives before they're in danger!"

Even Damian looked intrigued, leaning forward. "How do we start?"

---

Two hours later, the team was sneaking across the rooftops of the old harbor district, following the trail Raven detected.

"There." Raven pointed to an abandoned warehouse glowing faintly red through the windows.

Damian moved first, scaling the wall like a cat. Moments later, he silently unlocked the back door.

Inside looked like a makeshift magical lab. Three robed men whispered over a blood-drawn circle.

"Now," Kyle whispered.

They stormed in like a wave. Raven unleashed a wave of energy that choked out the spell mid-air. Jon and Kyle took down two cultists while Wally dashed around erasing the blood runes.

Damian? He handled it his way—a swift knockout blow to the leader before he could utter another word.

---

Two weeks later, the team chased cultists through the city's dark streets, Raven leading them through a maze of underground tunnels.

A quick skirmish broke out against a prematurely summoned lesser demon.

With every battle, their coordination sharpened, and their trust in one another grew stronger.

---

On the rooftop of their school, the five of them sat under the night sky, sharing fast food Wally had brought.

"Eight cultist groups stopped in two weeks," Jon said, raising a water bottle. "Not bad."

"Trigon won't take this lightly," Raven warned—but her voice carried new confidence.

Kyle reached out and placed his hand at the center of the circle. "Whatever comes, we'll be ready."

After a moment's hesitation, everyone placed their hands over his—even Damian.

In that moment, beneath the moonlight, something more than a team was born...

A united alliance.
