Chapter 16: Ch 16 : Shadows of the Truth
That night, Elsie sat on the balcony, letting the cold wind brush against her skin. The city lights twinkled in the distance, but her mind couldn't escape the events of the afternoon. The words of that girl kept echoing in her head.
"How long can you last before everyone finds out the truth?"
What did she really mean?
Elsie bit her lip and pulled out a small slip of paper from her notebook. The message was short, but enough to unsettle her:
"Be careful. Someone is watching."
Who had sent this? And more importantly, why?
The sound of the balcony door opening made Elsie flinch. Pierce stood there, dressed in a black shirt with his sleeves rolled up, his expression filled with concern.
"You look troubled," he said, stepping closer.
Elsie glanced at him, wanting to tell him everything but hesitating. She knew Pierce could always read her expressions.
"I'm just tired," she answered softly.
Pierce sat in the chair beside her, staring straight at the city skyline. "You know I won't push you, but if something is bothering you, I want you to tell me."
Elsie looked at him, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. She gripped the small piece of paper tighter before finally handing it to him.
Pierce took the paper and read it silently. His jaw tightened. "When did you get this?"
"This morning... before class started."
Pierce let out a slow breath, then met her gaze. "This isn't something we can ignore, Elsie. If someone is watching you, we need to find out who they are."
Elsie bit her lip. "I'm scared, Pierce. Does this have anything to do with—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Pierce's phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and read the incoming message. His eyes narrowed, and his expression darkened.
Elsie felt the tension suddenly fill the air. "Pierce...? What is it?"
Pierce looked at her for a moment before speaking in a low, cautious voice.
"We're not alone."
