Chapter 18: Ch 18 : Escape into the Unknown
The city lights blurred as Pierce led Elsie through the dimly lit streets. His grip on her hand was firm, yet gentle, as if he was afraid she would slip away at any moment.
"Where are we going?" Elsie asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Somewhere safe," Pierce muttered, scanning their surroundings. His sharp gaze flickered to every passing shadow, every alley, every person who might be watching.
The tension in the air was suffocating. The message on his phone—Don't move. They're watching.—kept replaying in his mind. Someone knew about them. Someone had been watching.
They reached an underground parking lot where Pierce's sleek black car was waiting. He opened the door for Elsie, his movements swift and controlled.
"Get in," he instructed.
As soon as Elsie settled in, Pierce slid into the driver's seat, started the engine, and drove off without hesitation. The car sped through the city, leaving behind the streets that felt far too dangerous now.
Elsie turned to look at him, her chest tightening at the sight of his rigid expression. "Pierce... do you think this has something to do with your position as CEO?"
Pierce tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "Maybe. Or maybe it's about me being your professor." His jaw clenched. "Either way, this isn't just a coincidence."
Elsie swallowed hard. The world she had been trying to navigate—balancing between being a student and Pierce's secret—was now spiraling into something far more dangerous.
"Do you trust me?" Pierce suddenly asked, his voice softer now.
Elsie didn't hesitate. "Always."
A ghost of a smile touched his lips, but it disappeared as quickly as it came. "Then hold on. Because things are about to get worse before they get better."
And as the city lights faded behind them, Elsie realized—this was no longer just about secrecy.
This was a game of survival.
