Moyu blinked, momentarily stunned by Yamamoto Genryūsai's words. He couldn't immediately grasp the old man's intent.
"Isn't that usually the responsibility of Squad Thirteen?" he asked. "Why send me there now? And with the strength of a vice-captain... isn't that overkill?"
Byakuya Kuchiki, seated nearby, closed his eyes and exhaled softly. Even now, Moyu refused to acknowledge his level of power. It was becoming tiresome.
Yamamoto's gaze darkened, his deep voice cutting through the room like a drawn blade.
"In recent years, Hueco Mundo has grown increasingly unstable. Numerous Hollows have begun spilling into the Human World. Aside from a skeleton crew stationed within their barracks, nearly all of Squad Thirteen's forces have been dispatched."
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle.
"The Twelfth Division and the Department of Research and Development are currently investigating the phenomenon. However…"
His eyes narrowed, the pressure in the room sharpening.
"…the burden on Squad Thirteen increases by the day. Your deployment wasn't decided by me alone. Both Kuchiki Ginrei and Captain Kuchiki support it. Young Shinigami need real-world experience."
Moyu was silent.
The moment Hueco Mundo was mentioned, one name rose in his mind—Aizen.
This unrest... it couldn't be unrelated to him. Though Aizen now controlled Las Noches, he hadn't unified the entirety of Hueco Mundo. Many corners remained unknown, crawling with dangers and Hollow Lords no one had yet named. Still, Aizen likely played a role behind the scenes—if not orchestrating this, then at least benefiting from it.
"…I understand," Moyu said at last. "I suppose I don't get a vote in this, but at least tell me where I'm being sent?"
Byakuya raised a brow. "What's this? Not even a token protest? Did life in Squad Four soften you?"
Moyu shot him a look and sighed. "The moment I saw the three of you here, it was obvious. If I couldn't figure that out, I wouldn't deserve to be called a Shinigami."
The presence of Ginrei and Byakuya meant this decision carried the will of the Kuchiki clan. And if Unohana Retsu had agreed to it without protest, then her stance was clear too. They hadn't even warned him. They just... sold him off.
He could only accept it.
"…I just hope you didn't assign me to some cursed backwater," he muttered. "That's all I ask."
Byakuya placed a hand on his chin, thinking for a moment.
"Given your strength and temperament," he said slowly, "I chose a relatively quiet city."
It was clearly a gesture of concern. For all his cold exterior, Byakuya still cared—especially when it came to his idiotic little cousin.
But Moyu felt a chill.
He'd known Byakuya too long not to see the signs. Despite his noble demeanor, Byakuya had a history of screwing up the details—be it family outings, tea ceremonies, or noble meetings. The man was impeccable with protocol, but blind to nuance.
Karakura Town immediately came to mind. Surely not—
"If I remember correctly," Byakuya said thoughtfully, "your assigned region is… Karakura Town."
---
Karakura Town, Human World.
Moonlight poured across the dark rooftops like a river of silver.
A rift opened in the sky, and from it stepped a black-robed figure with sharp features and tired eyes.
Moyu descended, guided by the fluttering glow of a hell butterfly.
"So it really is this cursed place," he muttered, surveying the familiar sprawl of high-rises. Spirit particles gathered beneath his feet, suspending him above the quiet streets. "I should've known better than to trust that guy."
Karakura Town…
Before the words left his lips, his silhouette flickered and vanished into the breeze.
---
His feet touched down lightly on the rooftop of a nearby building.
Below him, a massive Hollow crept through the shadows.
Humanoid in shape, but with a thick serpentine tail and a skeletal white mask, it looked like something dragged from a nightmare. Its massive frame towered over the alleyways, bone-white armor glinting under the moonlight.
Moyu regarded it coldly.
"Didn't expect my first night on duty to come with a welcome party."
He extended his right hand, index finger raised as his eyes sharpened.
"Hadō No. 4: Byakurai."
A flash of white lightning split the night.
