Chapter 415: To Reach A Distant Goal
Nikolai jumped at the idea of helping his mother. He always worshipped his dad, now he could help him in a way beyond reason.
"How do we start?"
Anastasia leaned on her palms as she watched her nephew. Her eyes narrowed into lazy slits. She couldn't help but smile at his reaction. "First, we should compare notes, something boring that I will deal with. Her knowledge and information are quite extensive."
"But..."
"Nikolai, I know you have information and secrets." Her fingers tapped her cheeks while watching his reaction. "However, please trust me... we have a team of ten scientists skilled in this field, along with Sasha and me. Marianne also agreed to help."
"W-What, Marianne did?"
Nikolai looked shocked. He didn't expect Alexei, let alone his sister, to be willing to help. That might be a good point for why Alexei remained his friend. Nikolai didn't take things for granted and never considered asking Alexei's sister for help.
I should be more open-minded.
The fact that Alexei offered to help made things easier, but Nikolai swore to treat this with more care in the future, as they were more like family than friends at this point.
'Family...'
He frowned at that thought and couldn't help but chuckle, which seemed to worry his aunt.
Anastasia waved her hand.
A moment later, the maids entered the room and took away the dishes.
"Don't become too obsessed with this." Anastasia stretched her back before pointing to the side room. "First, how about you speak to your mother about it? I know you used to spend every day together, but now she's with your father. It's been a while, right?"
His ears perked up in shock as if he'd forgotten that she was around, and Anastasia was right.
"She's waiting for you in the next room, go on. I will speak to Sasha and prepare everything; children should just enjoy life and smile." Anastasia picked up her tablet before raising an eyebrow with a smirk. "Or is there something you'd prefer to do instead of spending time with your mother?"
The sarcastic tone in her eye made Nikolai a little embarassed.
"A-Ah, no!"
Nikolai hurried to the next room, pushing open the door to find an exact copy of the main lounge, except it was far more extensive than the previous one. The only difference may be the lack of servants and maids, and the purple figure sitting on the sofa with a warm smile on her lips.
"Mother?"
Her figure looked more defined, the lines of her hips and shape now clear. "Your soul has become stronger!"
"W-Well... I can thank your father and our heritage for that, fufu. My son, come closer."
He didn't waste time and hurriedly sat beside her, his chest tight and throat a little dry.
"Niko, is that you? I feel like it's been forever. What kind of child doesn't speak to his mother anymore?"
His mother's voice was soothing, yet she also spoke the cold, hard truth.
"I... I'm sorry..."
Nikolai felt ashamed.
"Don't apologise, dear. What's more, you should be proud of what you've done. I saw you get married, and how you chose to love them all, instead of letting any of them down." Her eyes closed. "It made me happy to see the type of man you wanted to become, even your father was proud."
"Eh?"
Father was proud, I thought....
She chuckled. "What? Did you think he was disappointed in you? He was over the moon at having so many daughters. He always wanted to have a little girl."
'Somehow... I can't believe it...'
Nikolai closed his eyes and clenched his fists tightly. 'No, my mother doesn't lie!'
"He even joked about making them all call him dad..."
"Erm, Mother..."
"Fufu, your father and I are excited to meet them all again as daughters and family, so please bring them to meet me, okay?"
"Well, I am sure that it would be best to do that when..."
Nikolai looked around, feeling uncomfortable in the large room. His eyes landed on a door at the far end, which was partially open, and a dim light shone from it. The words he left unfinished made him nervous. He wondered how much his mother knew, or how much she accepted in this... would she be happy about what they wanted to do?
"You look worried..." Elizabeth sighed, her hand tried to stroke his cheek, but slipped through.
"I am." He couldn't deny it.
Not just the issue with his mother, but there was Ryan and his sister. Not to mention the Nosferatu issue that seemed deeper than just a hatred between clans.
"Well, don't be; everything will be okay. Your father and I will always protect you."
"I know, but I have to stand on my own to feet."
"Fufu, such a big boy now. Even if you became the king of the world, we would still do anything to help you."
"Really?"
"Of course."
The pair chuckled together; somehow, the things weighing his mind down became stupid, and holding back made him want to slap himself. "Mother."
"Yes?" She watched Nikolai in silence, her gaze unwavering.
"How would you feel if Sasha and everyone were able to find a way to fix you, for us to go back to how we used to be?" He asked hesitantly, his voice shaky as if afraid of the answer. "Would you want that? Be honest."
"I would... why wouldn't I?"
"Even if the method involves the suffering of others?"
"I don't care. Even if I was to sacrifice a hundred children or an entire planet, it wouldn't stop me from wanting to return to how we used to be. It might sound horrific but the only child I wish to protect is you. My son."
"But..." She continued, her hands cupping his cheeks. "I believe that you can find a way that won't hurt anyone. Isn't that why you didn't bring it up until now?"
Yes.
"I understand your hesitation. But you should be less worried about upsetting me and just do what you wish. If you can bring me back, I will be happy. But even if you fail, me and your father have spent the past months together without stop... I couldn't be happier even if I vanished tomorrow."
The honest words of his mother were a little shocking.
He didn't think she'd mention vanishing.
However, thanks to her sincere words, a weight disappeared from his shoulders, helping Nikolai to focus.
"Now then, shall we talk about something more exciting?" Her smile and glistening eyes caused Nikolai's spine to tingle with a sense of danger.

Meanwhile, in the upstairs bedroom, Amphitrite was the first to wake up, her eyelashes fluttering as she lifted her body.
However, the moment she stood, her eyes widened, and she felt a strange tingle inside her abdomen. 'Eh?' She touched her lower body, feeling small bumps that were hard and round. Her eyebrows rose as she felt each of them; a smile appeared on her lips, and she quickly reached for her phone on the bedside table.
'No way...!'
Amphitrite covered her mouth, her heart beating faster than she could imagine.
"I need to let Darling know!"
A mermaid's eggs usually remained soft until becoming fertilised, then they spent three months as a solid, hard sphere, allowing the child to form in complete protection.
Amphitrite was also a hybrid created by a human organisation, a rare creature that might have been unable to reproduce. However, the signals sent to her brain, which made her want to sing, matched what she knew as the Queen of mermaids...
How many other women did she oversee at this stage? A ridiculous number. It was her duty, after all.
"I'm pregnant!"
The fear that her race might end, after all the mermaids perished, crumbled and only hope and delight remained.
Her loud and excited voice woke the woman on the other side of the bed.
"Ow... why did you scream...? Ahh..."
Lunaria groaned, sitting up with a sore body. She grabbed a sheet and wrapped herself up before glaring at Amphitrite, who hugged herself, tears dripping down her cheeks. "Ah~ I am so happy, Luna!" The two weren't close and often bickered, but when Amphitrite hugged her, Luna became stunned.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm pregnant!"
"Say what?"
"It's a child~ his child!"
Luna paused for a moment, her face unreadable. Her lips tremble, and for some reason, she could understand the joy of the woman she didn't like. "Y-Yes! That's awesome..." She grabbed Amphitrite's cheeks. "But does that mean even as engineered hybrid's we can get pregnant?"
"Yes! We can!"
The two women squealed together.
In the past, Amphitrite lied about becoming pregnant because she wished to believe it could happen.
"Is it because our husband is also a hybrid?" Amphitrite muttered.
"Or because of his special blood?" Luna added.
"Both... it has to be both!" Amphitrite smiled. "He's amazing."
"Yes, but you should wait until the other girls know before announcing anything."
"You just want to get pregnant too right?"
"Mm..."
It might have been the first time the women spoke without fighting.
A small alliance formed in the sunny bedroom. Birds chirped outside the window, and the scent of sea salt wafted through a slight opening as both women spoke about the future and how to convince Nikolai to impregnate Luna.
