Chapter 4: Chapter 4 -Awakening-
Kira and Rimiu walked hand in hand through the entrance of the shopping mall. As they approached the center of the mall, the density of people inside increased more and more.
"Mom, what are we going to buy?" asked Kira, looking around curiously.
"Well, I want to buy you some clothes. You're growing so fast, and your clothes are getting too small. We'll also stop by the food section to pick up some groceries we need at home," said Rimiu with a smile that made a few men glance at her.
"Mmm..." Kira simply made a sound, agreeing with his mother.
They walked along the wide white path of the mall, with neon signs on either side displaying the names of the various stores. After walking a few more meters, Rimiu's eyes lit up as she spotted the clothing store she had been looking for.
When they arrived, Kira and Rimiu saw a vast array of clothing of all kinds, for both men and women. The sections were divided, with men's clothing on the right and women's clothing on the left.
As Kira entered the store with his mother, his curious eyes caught sight of a girl about his age in the distance. She had short, light blue hair that reached her shoulders, and her clothes were a similar sky-blue color. Since she was too far away, he couldn't make out more details, but what caught his attention was how she kept jumping around and inspecting the clothes, as if there was something about them that he couldn't see.
He didn't have more time to observe the girl, as his mother pulled him toward the men's section. The clothes were neatly arranged on hangers and shelves, with children's clothes mostly on the shelves rather than the hangers, where the clothes for older kids, aged 10 and up, were displayed.
...
During this time, Kira tried on dozens of outfits under Rimiu's guidance, with Kira only able to choose the ones he liked the most. It took them over 10 minutes to try everything on and pick out the outfits. In total, they bought four sets that Kira liked the most.
As Rimiu swiped her card at the card reader to complete the payment, she packed the clothes into the bags provided by the cashier behind the counter.
Before the cashier could say something like "thank you for your purchase," a massive explosion erupted out of nowhere, filling the surroundings with fire and debris.
It was unclear whether it was a mother's instinct in the face of danger or something more mysterious, but Rimiu reacted almost instantly as the explosion went off. She had just enough time to shield her son with her back.
But that wasn't the end of it. Seconds later, countless milky-white crystals burst out of thin air, and unfortunately for Rimiu, a 10-centimeter-long crystal shard pierced through her stomach.
What terrified Rimiu the most was that her regeneration quirk wasn't working at all. The wounds that normally would have healed in moments now remained as if she were an ordinary person.
"Ugh!" Rimiu spat out a mouthful of blood, turning her head to the side to avoid staining her son with her own blood. The blood formed a small pool on the ground, and the corners of her lips were instantly stained with blood.
"Mom!" Kira screamed in horror after realizing what had happened. He was horrified to see his mother, who was always in perfect health, now with a strange 10-centimeter crystal shard piercing her stomach.
He was about to step forward to desperately help his mother, but before he could do anything, Rimiu used the last bit of strength she had to push Kira about three meters away from her. Just a second later, the ceiling collapsed right where Kira had been standing.
In less than 10 seconds, Rimiu had saved Kira's life twice. It would have been impressive if the situation weren't so dire.
Crash!
A steel pillar fell to the ground, and the moment it hit, debris and dust flew in all directions. But this wasn't the only part of the ceiling that collapsed. The entire store, if not the entire mall, was falling apart.
The screams of the people echoed almost in unison.
"Help! My leg is pinned under the debris!"
"Someone call the heroes! I'm trapped under the rubble!"
"Where are the heroes?!"
Hundreds of voices cried out in desperation and pain, creating a symphony of terror that sent chills down everyone's spines.
"Kira, you need to find a safe place! Don't worry about me, Mom will be fine!" Rimiu shouted with all the strength she could muster, trying to reassure her son behind the debris that completely blocked Kira from view.
"No, absolutely not! I won't leave you alone, Mom!" Kira screamed, tears streaming down his face like a waterfall. His voice carried a desperation that no three-year-old should ever have to feel.
"Please, Kira, find a pla—" Rimiu's pleading voice was cut off as she spat out another mouthful of blood, even worse than before. This time, Rimiu couldn't withstand the massive blood loss and instantly fell into a coma.
Kira heard his mother's voice cut off abruptly, and his blue pupils shrank in fear.
"Mom, are you okay?!" Kira shouted, his voice breaking. He ran toward his mother with all his might, but unfortunately, his small hands couldn't move the heavy debris. Through the gaps in the rubble, Kira saw his mother's head and limbs slumped, blood steadily pooling on the ground.
The smell of blood mixed with the dust in the air, and Kira, who caught a whiff of it, felt like vomiting right then and there. But he reminded himself that he couldn't afford to. In this situation, the memories in his mind maximized their value, providing him with rationality.
Kira also noticed that, moment by moment, the unpleasant smell became less and less unbearable.
But at this moment, that didn't matter to him. He wasn't going to abandon his mother, even if it cost him his life. Thanks to the fragments of memories in his mind, within a few seconds, he devised a plan to save his mother.
As he thought, Kira looked around for a path. Strangely, the dust in the air seemed to clear, allowing him to see his surroundings perfectly. Kira's eyes lit up as he found what he was looking for.
Wiping away his tears, Kira's eyes filled with determination to save his mother.
Whoosh!
Again, Kira felt that with every passing second, his heart, which had been beating at its maximum speed, began to slow down, and a strange calmness washed over his mind.
But all these strange occurrences were deliberately ignored by Kira as he dodged debris more and more fluidly.
Step, jump, jump, duck, dodge, break.
With every movement he made, he became faster and more competent.
His plan was to dodge the debris and navigate around the rubble to reach the other side where his mother was. Although the distance wasn't normally far, with the debris as obstacles, what was once a short distance now felt like a 100-meter sprint.
Kira didn't stop at all. Sometimes, he had to use all his strength to break through small openings and knock down some debris blocking his path. His small hands bled constantly, staining the ground with drops of his blood.
Again, the strangeness returned, this time even stronger. In less than 10 seconds, the wounds on his hands stopped bleeding, and as they healed, Kira only felt a slight itch and nothing more.
Step, step, jump, jump, duck, dodge, break.
As he experienced these events, Kira moved even faster, not worrying too much about himself. After all, it seemed he had a fairly strong healing factor that came in handy.
He reached the women's fitting room area, which was relatively intact compared to the rest of the store.
Unconsciously, Kira's ears twitched, and he heard a sob coming from inside one of the fitting rooms. The sob sounded childish, like that of a little girl.
Gritting his teeth reluctantly, he deviated from his original path. The door to the fitting room where the crying was coming from was blocked by a large piece of debris.
Kira didn't waste his precious time and, disregarding his three-year-old body, grabbed the concrete debris with all ten fingers to push it aside.
"Come on, come on, come on! I don't have time; Mom is in danger!" Kira shouted to himself in his mind. His eyes, filled with determination, sharpened like an eagle's. He stretched his small arms with all his might, the veins on his forehead and arms bulging from the immense effort.
One second, two seconds, four seconds...
Slightly, the debris made a cracking sound, filling Kira with infinite hope. His small arms pushed even harder, and though his arms creaked like nuts about to break, Kira didn't care and kept pushing.
As the seconds passed, Kira felt his strength increasing slowly but steadily, along with his physical endurance.
Crash!
The debris fell to the ground, creating a small cloud of dust that Kira ignored as he opened the door as quickly as he could. He had to jump a little to reach the doorknob, but he managed to open the door without further issues.
Their blue eyes met for an instant.
Kira saw the girl with the light blue hair from before, but not only was the girl there, her mother was also present, with the same blue hair. However, the girl's mother was lying on the floor, her head bleeding and mixed with the debris from the impact moments ago.
Kira didn't speak. In the next moment, he took off his shirt at top speed and moved the girl aside, who didn't have time to say anything in response to the sudden appearance of the boy in front of her.
Using memories from his past life, Kira applied pressure to the bleeding area with all the strength in his small hands, which were stronger than before.
"Do you have any strength? We need to carry your mother to the entrance to save her life," Kira said quickly to the girl, ignoring her sobs.
The girl froze and could only muster a whisper, using all her strength not to burst into tears: "What do I do?" she asked, her voice trembling with fear.
"Grab your mother's legs. I'll handle the rest, and then I'll guide the way to the entrance. Don't worry; everything will be fine, and your mother will recover soon," Kira said quickly, comforting the girl with the best smile he could muster.
The girl's eyes lit up, and upon hearing that her mother would be okay, her fear and timidity diminished greatly.
Seeing the girl's blue eyes shift from fear to determination in an instant, Kira didn't waste any more time. He positioned himself behind the mother and lifted her onto his back, holding her arms behind him to keep her from falling. The girl didn't hesitate either and struggled to hold her mother's legs.
...
The two of them managed, albeit a bit clumsily, to get out of the fitting room. They didn't stop at all. Since Kira could see through the dust, he guided the blue-haired girl, who didn't hesitate to follow his every instruction.
The effort he was putting in now was more than 10 times harder than before. Not only did he have to carry an adult woman and verbally guide a three-year-old girl, but he also had to use his legs to break through some debris instead of his hands.
But strangely, it didn't make Kira feel uncomfortable or anything like that. On the contrary, he felt as though carrying the woman was becoming easier, and his wound healing was becoming even faster than before. Now, even if his legs were injured from using all his strength, they would heal in less than two seconds.
Step, step, jump, jump, duck, dodge, break.
A while later, Kira's eyes filled with joy and concern as he saw the milky-white crystals.
"WE'RE ALMOST THERE! HOLD ON A LITTLE LONGER!" Kira shouted to the girl, who was on the verge of passing out from the immense effort, even though Kira was carrying most of the load.
A moment later...
"We're here!" Kira shouted, seeing the cluster of crystal spikes where his mother was. Before running off, he gently placed the girl's mother in a relatively safe spot.
"Stay here and take care of your mother. I have to go," Kira said quickly, not giving the girl a chance to say a word.
Kira sprinted at top speed toward his mother, who was still in danger. Among the crystal spikes, Kira's eyes filled with determination as he spotted his mother.
Kira no longer hesitated. He was like a beast unleashed. The thing that had been helping him all along became 100 times stronger, but not in terms of brute strength—it was something entirely different.
When he touched the crystal for the first time, Kira felt an overwhelming weakness. But despite the obvious weakness, Kira had a strange feeling telling him not to let go. Since this feeling had helped him countless times before, he obeyed, and within a couple of seconds, the weakness faded away completely.
When the weakness disappeared, Kira touched the crystal, and it shattered like ordinary glass. This time, his fists only went numb and didn't break the body's defenses.
Kira went full JoJo, unleashing a barrage of punches that came and went, constantly colliding with the crystals, which shattered one by one as Kira advanced step by step toward his mother, who still had a crystal shard piercing her stomach.
When he reached his mother, Kira didn't hesitate to take off his pants and throw them on the ground to later use as a makeshift bandage for the stomach wound.
Carefully, Kira broke the crystal at its base with a click.
Before his mother could collapse to the ground, Kira clumsily caught her and removed the crystal that had pierced her stomach.
The moment the crystal was removed, it was clear that the stomach wound stopped bleeding, but the wound itself didn't heal at all.
Although the wound stopped bleeding, Kira tied a knot in his pants and wrapped them around his mother, covering the wound to prevent external substances like dust from entering.
Quickly, Kira carried his mother as best he could to where the girl and her blue-haired mother were.
A few meters before reaching them, the girl got up from beside her mother when she saw Kira and, without hesitation, helped him despite her exhaustion.
Kira could only look at her gratefully. Together, they placed Rimiu next to the girl's mother.
When the girl saw the mother of the boy who had helped her, she felt deeply grateful. Clenching her small teeth, she looked hesitantly at her unconscious mother with closed eyes, but with a determination that came from the heart, she approached Rimiu under Kira's watchful gaze. He didn't know what the girl would do, but he felt she wouldn't harm his mother, so he let her do what she wanted.
The girl glanced at Kira, but seeing that he didn't stop her, she gained more confidence. When she got close enough to Rimiu, she extended her two small palms toward the wound on her stomach. Taking a deep breath, ripples of a golden color appeared on her palms.
A few seconds later, the ripples gradually ceased, and the next second, the girl collapsed to the ground, completely drained of energy. She braced herself for the pain of hitting the ground, but a pair of arms stopped her fall.
Before passing out, she whispered her name.
"My name is Nejire," she said softly as her eyes closed from endless exhaustion.
