Chapter 37: Date of Birth
"Oh, my dear boss, please don't overexert yourself!"
Kyle, having been injected with an advanced serum, now possessed an extraordinary level of strength. However, the intensity was a bit much for him to fully control, and as a result, he had unintentionally applied pressure to Dr. Laura.
Realizing this, Kyle released the doctor from his grasp. He considered injecting Dr. Laura with the serum as well, just in case the man suddenly dropped dead one day from the stress.
"Enough with the nonsense. Take us to the test site."
Kyle patted Dr. Laura on the shoulder. After all, it had cost him 120 million dollars to construct this facility, with the bulk of the expenditure going toward specialized equipment.
Only ten implantation capsules had been built, though they were much less advanced than the ones at the Water Company. They were a simplified version, but the functionality was the same.
"It's all set, just finishing up the last details for the experiment," Dr. Laura replied as he picked up the documents he'd recently organized—his research on Crystal No. 7.
At present, there were only three remaining No. 7 crystals, with one secured at Arkham. Another was at the headquarters of the Water Company, and the third had been divided and sent to various factories for product development.
The high cost of these crystals explained their rarity.
"After the Red Queen takes over, immediately hand over the control of the implantation capsule. She'll handle all the implantation work."
As part of the Water Company, the Red Queen system maintained a subsystem that operated wherever Kyle went. This allowed seamless communication between the main Red Queen system and its subsidiaries.
"Boss, these are the ten participants for today's implantation. They're all carefully chosen," said Dr. Laura as they arrived at the experiment site. Ten people stood in white lab coats, surrounded by reinforced soldiers keeping watch.
The youngest subject was 18, while the oldest was 25.
"Why is there an addict among them?"
Kyle stood outside the glass observation window, scanning the group. His eyes landed on one person in particular—an addict. Her body appeared frail, with a pale complexion that lacked any color. Her lips were bloodless, and her face showed an expression of dullness mixed with an undercurrent of resolve.
"Boss, don't underestimate a person's potential."
"This is Herb Bell, and she scored perfectly in the pre-test," Dr. Laura explained, pride evident in his voice. "At 22, she's shown immense potential. A person with strong convictions and determination can't be beaten, no matter the pain."
"Really? Then I'll be keeping an eye on her," Kyle said, intrigued. He hoped this subject would offer something unexpected.
Natasha, however, wasn't overly impressed. She pulled up a chair and sat down, watching quietly.
In preparation for any potential danger, Natasha was dressed in a specially designed combat suit—a tight-fitting, tactical outfit meant for close quarters and flexibility.
"Ahem, I'm Dr. Laura, the lead researcher for this experiment. You may now enter the implantation capsules, and the procedure will begin immediately."
Dr. Laura's voice crackled through the intercom as he began preparations. After confirming that all ten subjects were inside their respective capsules, he pressed the start button, and the experiment was underway.
The group waited in silence, the anticipation building.
Two long hours passed. Natasha stretched and stood up, walking toward the observation room. If anyone were to lose control during the experiment, she would be there to intervene, subdue them, and lock them away. Killing them was not an option; alive, they were far more useful for future research, especially since Dr. Laura might be able to perfect the process over time.
"Open the first one," Kyle instructed, glancing at his watch.
The ten capsules were to be opened one by one to minimize risk. If they were all opened simultaneously, Natasha wouldn't be able to handle multiple subjects going out of control at once.
With a hiss, the first capsule's hatch opened.
Inside was a 21-year-old woman. She had joined the experiment to help pay for her mother's expensive medical treatments. Growing up in a single-parent household had made her fiercely protective of the only family she had left.
"I did it... I succeeded!"
The woman stepped out slowly but with newfound strength. Her eyes had turned a piercing, icy blue, and immediately, the temperature in the room began to drop. A cold gust seemed to emanate from her body.
"Is she controlling ice?"
Kyle furrowed his brow as the room temperature plummeted. He was concerned—the ability to control ice was powerful, but if not properly managed, it could be overwhelming.
"Hello, Lina Daisy," Natasha called, "I'm your new captain. Since your awakening was successful, step behind me and wait for further adjustments."
Daisy seemed dazed, still getting used to her newfound powers. Natasha wasn't happy with the delay. Her schedule was tight—she had plans to go shopping with Alice back in New York, and she didn't have time to babysit.
"Okay... okay," Daisy mumbled, slowly moving behind Natasha as she began to regain her bearings.
All the subjects knew the risks. The experiment had been described to them clearly beforehand: success would lead to a life of power, while failure meant being trapped in an unending nightmare. Of the original fifty participants, only ten remained after some failed to survive the initial testing phase.
"Okay, open the second one," Kyle said after seeing that Natasha and Daisy were managing.
With the anesthetic having taken effect, the second capsule's hatch was violently smashed open by a fist.
"Ahhh!!"
A massive, muscular man leaped out of the capsule, his eyes glowing a fierce crimson. Three circular red spots had appeared on his chest and palms, pulsing with energy.
The man began to gather crimson light, preparing to unleash it.
Without hesitation, Natasha moved in swiftly. A precise strike to the man's neck knocked him unconscious in an instant.
"Really? Is this the extent of his abilities after losing control?" Natasha said with mild confusion. She had expected a more challenging fight. This man didn't even attempt to dodge. Instead, he just stood there and took the blow, even though Natasha's strike could easily slice through steel.
It seemed like the subject's power was far less formidable than initially anticipated.
