Chapter 38: Failure

Next, the remaining eight implanted capsules were opened one by one. Several subjects failed to awaken and instead entered a frenzied state, losing control of their powers. Natasha swiftly neutralized them, leaving only three who successfully retained their sanity.

As for the six who failed, they were imprisoned in the facility's mental hospital, never to return to this place. With their powers, if they were to break free, the damage they could cause would be catastrophic.

The key concern was that these individuals had only just acquired their powers and hadn't learned how to control them. For now, they were subdued by Natasha, but once they became accustomed to their abilities, only someone like the Hulk or Thor from the Avengers might stand a chance against them.

One subject, in particular, posed a grave threat to Captain America or Iron Man. This individual had the ability to generate a vacuum field—a power capable of neutralizing even the most advanced technologies. Even Natasha, with all her combat training, had to expend significant effort to subdue him. The fact that she succeeded was due to sheer luck.

As for their families, Kyle promised to make appropriate arrangements and ensure they were compensated.

"When can they move freely?" Kyle pondered. "It depends on when they can regain their senses and stop their madness."

The wards housing the failed subjects were constructed from special steel, and the subjects wore shackles laced with Crystal No. 7—an invention discovered by Kyle and Gasco a month prior. This crystal had the unique property of limiting the powers of superhumans.

"Go and put them in shackles and lock them in the rooms," Kyle ordered.

It was a necessary sacrifice. Kyle had already warned the subjects before the implantation about the potential consequences of failure, as well as the compensation they would receive if they succeeded. Despite understanding the risks, they still chose to undergo the procedure in hopes of obtaining a new life filled with power and wealth.

"Bring the four successful subjects here," Kyle instructed.

While Dr. Laura handled the detention procedures, Kyle decided to meet the four new superhumans himself.

Soon, Natasha arrived with the group, rubbing her sore wrist. She found a chair and collapsed into it, visibly exhausted after dealing with so many superhumans in such a short period.

"Introduce yourselves. And by the way, what abilities did you awaken?" Kyle asked with a welcoming smile, trying to ease the tension in the room. He had a nagging feeling that his team was a bit... off.

Despite being only fifteen, Kyle had acquired a reputation that made him seem much more intimidating. After all, a teenager known for ruthlessly killing during the Tony Stark attack had earned him titles like "murderer" and "bloodthirsty monarch." It was no wonder that the subjects looked apprehensive.

Herb Bell, the young addict, stepped forward first.

"Hello, boss. My name is Herb Bell. My ability is spatial movement, though for now, I can only teleport short distances within myself."

"Hello, boss. I'm Lina Daisy," the next subject introduced herself, her voice slightly uncertain. "My power seems to be ice manipulation."

"Hello, boss," Rondon Daremcia said, standing tall and imposing. "My ability is to enhance my physical strength, making myself stronger."

"Hi, I'm Lilian Pagaret Clark," the final subject spoke up, though she appeared more reserved. "I'm still unsure of my exact power at the moment."

Kyle was particularly intrigued by Rondon, who was a huge, muscular man, taller and broader than even Gasco. Based on his ability to strengthen himself, Kyle immediately thought of him as a walking tank.

Herb Bell caught Kyle's attention too—spatial movement was a rare and powerful power, something that could prove invaluable.

As for Daisy, Kyle joked to himself, Maybe we should call her Elsa, given her ice powers.

The last subject, Lilian, appeared unremarkable except for the peculiar burgundy color in her eyes, which hadn't revealed any noticeable powers yet. Kyle made a mental note to watch her development closely.

"Well, you should all get to know each other," Kyle said, gesturing to Natasha. "These five—" he paused, "well, technically four, since I'm with you, Natasha—will form the company's exclusive superpower team. This beautiful woman beside me is your boss!"

Kyle gave Natasha a light pat on the shoulder, then quickly excused himself as Natasha shot him a glare sharp enough to slice steel. He wasn't about to stick around for the inevitable tension.

"Alright, then," Natasha said, taking charge with a tired smile. "Let's get acquainted. Natasha Romanoff, but you can call me Captain."

The group echoed in unison, "Okay, Captain!"

Mental Hospital – First Floor

In a surveillance room hidden away from the subjects, Kyle and Dr. Laura were observing the failed subjects. The six individuals were currently in a frenzy, throwing furniture around and wrecking the facility.

Despite the shackles dampening their powers, the subjects were still physically strong, and their anger only intensified the destruction. One of them kicked over an iron-framed bed, sending it crashing into the wall.

"This is bad," Laura said, looking at the brainwave test results in his hands. "These new fluctuations are off the charts. Their minds have broken, and it's unlikely they'll ever come back from this."

Kyle didn't regret implanting them, though. They'd all been informed of the risks and rewards before consenting to the procedure. They knew the stakes.

"They'll stay here," Kyle said, focusing his gaze on one particular room. "Lock them up. The shackles will hold them for now, but there's one person we need to watch more carefully."

Room No. 4 caught his attention. The occupant of that room had a dangerous power—one that could easily escalate if left unchecked. This man had an infection ability, similar to that of a zombie plague or parasitic control.

Any bite or scratch from him would result in rapid transformation of the victim into a puppet, bound to his will. If these subjects were released into the world in this uncontrolled frenzy, they could infect an entire city in mere hours.

"Seriously, this is going to be a nightmare," Kyle muttered.

Dr. Laura had already confirmed the potential of the other subjects, including the giant in Room 1, who was knocked out by Natasha. This man had the ability to release devastating energy bombs from his chest and palms. The worst part? He could absorb sunlight to store up energy for these bombs.

With so many volatile abilities in one place, Kyle was keenly aware that the stakes had just gotten much higher.
