Chapter 24: Ch.24 : The Fall and the Fight
After finding their seats in the stands, the swimming competition began. Cheers erupted all around as students hyped up their favorite contestants. In the first heat, Anna took the lead with an impressive performance, earning admiration from the crowd.
But when it was Raina's turn, something strange happened. From afar, Anna discreetly shot a small rubber band with perfect precision, hitting Raina's leg. The sudden sting made Raina flinch and hesitate at the jump. She entered the water last and ended up finishing in last place.
Nic, watching the race closely, noticed something was off. Raina's expression hinted at pain, even though she tried to hide it. "This can't go on," he muttered.
Without drawing attention, Nic pulled out his transparent gun—Love shoot. He turned to his girlfriends with a playful smile.
"Hey, check this out. I'm gonna shoot someone and make 'em fall for me," he joked.
Mika looked up from her burger, confused. "Don't be weird, Nic."
He pretended to miss his shot. "Dang, missed it."
Lily laughed and tapped his forehead. "Nic, you're more stressed than I am, huh?"
But in truth, Nic's shot had landed—right on Raina. With love shoot, not only could he make someone fall in love, he could also whisper directly into their thoughts. As Raina got ready for her second heat, Nic sent her a silent message.
"When the second countdown hits, lift your left leg slightly."
Startled by the voice in her mind, Raina hesitated but followed the suggestion. On the second beat, she lifted her leg just in time to dodge the rubber Anna had launched again. This time, she dove in flawlessly and surged ahead, finishing in first place.
Anna was stunned. "How did she know?!"
Round after round, Nic continued giving Raina guidance.
"This time, lift your right leg," he whispered.
Raina obeyed, avoiding another trap. Anna grew increasingly frustrated. Her timing and tricks all failed. When it was her turn again, she slipped up and only managed third place, eliminating her from the final. The defeat stung even more as her rival took first, and laughter from other contestants only made her angrier. She stormed out of the venue.
---
As the final round approached, Raina began to wonder where the voice was coming from. The tone felt oddly familiar. Scanning the stands, she finally spotted Nic giving her a thumbs-up with a smile. Her cheeks flushed as she recognized the voice from the day before—the person who had saved her.
She lost focus briefly, confused by it all. But when the race began, Nic had already left the stands, giving her space to concentrate. Free from distractions, Raina performed at her peak and won the finals, the crowd erupting with cheers.
---
After the event, Raina was approached by Rayn—a notorious twelfth-grade student known for his looks and power around Solis Academy.
"Congrats, Raina. You were amazing," he said coolly.
"Come on, let me treat you to a meal. Call it a celebration."
Raina was about to decline when Anna suddenly appeared. "If Rayn invites you, just say yes. You should be grateful," she said with a sneer.
Reluctantly, Raina agreed. As they walked, Rayn casually reached for her shoulder, but she pushed his hand away.
"Please don't touch me," Raina said firmly.
Rayn chuckled. "Relax. You're single, right? Or… do you have someone?"
Raina hesitated. "No…"
Seeing her cheeks flush, Rayn grinned. "If you don't, why are you blushing? Who is he, huh?"
"I said I don't have one!" she snapped.
Still unconvinced, Rayn suddenly grabbed her cheek. "Then why are you acting like that, huh?"
At that moment, Nic appeared, holding a paper cup of tea. He sipped casually, then said, "Hey, senior. I don't like seeing guys get rough with girls."
Rayn's eyes narrowed as he stepped forward. "Class eleven, huh?" he said mockingly.
Nic was about to reply when Rayn punched him hard in the face. Nic collapsed, his tea spilling on the ground. Holding his throbbing head, Nic muttered, "Why do I always get punched first…"
Raina panicked. "Rayn, stop! You'll seriously hurt him!"
Rayn turned to her coldly. "Stay out of it," he said, then faced Nic again.
Nic slowly got up, wiping his head. "Hey!" he shouted.
Rayn turned—and Nic kicked him in the head, sending him sprawling. Raina gasped, covering her mouth.
Furious, Rayn lunged at Nic, pushing him back and landing a blow to his stomach. Nic staggered but countered with a punch to Rayn's face.
The fight escalated. They traded punches violently, moving toward a storage room. Crashes echoed as boxes and shelves tumbled. Outside, Raina stood frozen—unsure whether to intervene or run for help.
Inside, Nic managed to pin Rayn down, hammering his face with relentless blows.
"Stop, Nic! Please!" Raina screamed through tears.
Desperately, she pulled Nic away. "That's enough! Please stop!"
Breathing heavily, Nic stood, his fists trembling. "He deserved it."
But Rayn, dazed but not done, grabbed a nearby glass bottle and smashed it over Nic's head. Blood poured as Nic collapsed.
Standing tall, Rayn looked at Raina with a cruel grin. "That your boyfriend? Looks like he's done."
Yet Nic, bloody and bruised, wasn't finished. With the last of his strength, he yanked Rayn's leg, tripping him. Then, with one final kick, sent Rayn crashing into a pile of glass bottles.
The shattering echoed through the warehouse. Rayn lay unconscious.
Nic slumped to the ground, clutching his bleeding head. He looked up at Raina and whispered, "You… should've asked for help sooner…"
And then he passed out.
---
Raina sprinted outside, screaming for help.
"Help! Someone's hurt!"
People nearby rushed over. When Nic's four girlfriends arrived and saw his condition, they fell silent in horror. Nia stepped forward and grabbed Raina's shoulders.
"What happened?!" she shouted.
Raina sobbed uncontrollably. "I'm sorry… It's all my fault… I didn't know what to do…"
---
Nic and Rayn were rushed to the hospital. On the way, Nia called every one of Nic's girlfriends, updating them on his condition. Panic spread like wildfire as they all hurried to the hospital.
In the recovery room, Nic lay unconscious. His head was bandaged, the bleeding stopped, but his face was pale. Vivi sat beside him, clutching his hand tightly.
"You promised we'd have our date… Why did this have to happen…" she whispered through tears.
When Raina entered, she immediately dropped to her knees before Vivi and the others.
"I'm so sorry… This is all my fault…" she sobbed.
Vivi sighed deeply, trying to stay calm. "Enough. Don't be so loud—you'll disturb Nic."
Olivia approached and gently patted Raina's shoulder. "It's okay. He'll be fine."
Then Nia asked, "What about that bastard? Is he alright?"
Raina replied softly, "He wasn't badly hurt. No serious injuries."
Hearing that, Leona exploded. "Nic is way worse! His head's bleeding! He could've died!"
Vivi, overcome with emotion, slapped Leona. "Don't say things like that!"
Leona flinched and lowered her head. "Sorry… I didn't mean it," she whispered, then was hugged by Jenny.
Suddenly, a weak voice came from the bed. "Stop… Raina's not at fault…"
Everyone turned, shocked to see Nic opening his eyes.
"Nic! Since when have you been awake?!" Fanny exclaimed.
Nic smiled weakly. "Just now… Don't blame Raina. This is my fault…"
He tried to sit up. Vivi hugged him tightly, her tears flowing.
"You idiot! Don't do reckless stuff like this again!"
Nic chuckled softly. "Sorry… I broke my promise… and made all of you worry."
Vivi replied, "Our date can wait… Just get better first."
As the tension finally began to ease, Nia spoke up. "Nic, once you're better… the principal said you're suspended for a week because of all this."
Nic just nodded with a tired smile. "That's fine. I could use the rest anyway."
His joke lightened the mood a little, though the worry in their hearts still lingered.
To be continued...
