Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Truth, Lesson, and Opportunity I
Nassir laid back onto his bed and sighed to himself. The verbal lashing he received from his mother had been severe and while it frustrated him to sit through it knowing he had done the right thing, he could not fault her for it. Form her perspective he had just made an unnecessary gamble for very little reason. It looked, for all intents and purposes, he had made a childish promise to one of the most powerful people in the Empire without knowing what it fully entailed. And it was not like he could tell her it was all thought out; that would require sharing his past life, and he would never do that. Even if he told her about the potential of Beye, she would not see it as worth the benefits that eight top tier offerings would potentially give him.
Powerhouses in this world were weird; while they value those with high potential, that care did not go very far. When it was so easy for a prodigy to die young -or just not live up to expectation- it became more cost and time effective for them to focus their resources on themselves. The older and stronger the powerhouse were the more likely they were to not care about the younger generation.
To some extent he could understand them, they had seen talents rise and fall like weeds in the woods. At a certain point you just kind of lose interest. Even his mother who could not be any older than fifty, had seen more than her fair share of prodigies fall he was sure. The heavy investment did not justify it for her.
But they could not see what he could see, they did not know the future like he did. Beye would become, just after Richard and Martin, the most talented member of this generation. She was bound to surpass her father some day. He would be a fool not to take the chance to have her in his corner early on in her development.
He chuckled to himself, he had just got himself into severe debt and would be running right back into it in a few days. It did not matter though, if things went according to his plans than he would be able to pay back his debts and still have some extra left.
Sitting up on his bed he decided to worry about his future problems in the future. The deal had already been made and no matter how much his mother was upset about it she wouldn't go behind his back and renege. Now, he just had to make sure he could live up to the leader that would warrant having exceptionally talented followers like Beye and Simeon. To do that he will need to learn how to effectively use his rune.
When he had first activated his rune he had been overwhelmed by the amount of information he had received from it. In the moment he had not been able to use it all and had to banish most of it for the sake of the meeting. It was then he learned the name of the ability, True Sight. A powerful ability that lived up to it's name. Before he activated True Sight again, he grabbed a pillow and focused his full attention on it.
When he willed the power to be, it came. His vision filled with information about the pillow. Its measurements, when and where it was made, what it was made of and so much more. The more he read the more the smile on his face grew in size. He knew this ability, normally it was only acquirable by the Silvermoon Elves one of the blessings from their goddess, Truth. A blessing that on its on was incredibly powerful, but it saw its best use when it was paired with the other blessings. If this was all this part of his rune did he would be grateful, maybe a little disappointed, fortunately this was not the case.
He put the pillow down and picked up an apple that he had brought with him from the kitchens. He used his sight on this and while he saw something similar as before he also saw more. He could see when the apple would expire and how it would taste. These were good but, the third thing he saw blew it all away, he could see the potential uses of the apple! He could see possible recipes it could be used for, how he could use it to most effectively grow an apple tree and most importantly it showed how it could be used in both runes and alchemy!
This is what made him giddy, ecstatic even. With an ability like this learning how to make runes or going into alchemy would be a walk in the park. While he was not to sure on how effective the information the sight gave him was, the fact that it provided anything was more than helpful. He had basically no information on magic at the moment, however once he did learn about the two professions he was sure the information would update along with it. It was truly revolutionary for him.
Paired with the Truth and this ability to see potential, it was a monumental ability of the rune.
When the thought of seeing potential crossed his mind he was curious about his own. He jumped up from the bed and made his way to mirror in the adjacent room where he dressed. He frowned when he made his way to it. Unlike the other children he had come across his did not have a level range above it, all he could see was '????'.
His own rune couldn't judge his potential. He could only think of a could reasons why, either his potential was unquantifiable or the rune was prevented from judging him in some way. The first one did not seem likely as it had been able to determine the max potential of Beye as a Pinnacle Powerhouse and he was not arrogant enough to think that his Potential was higher than a Pinnacle Powerhouse. The second one seemed to be the most likely or it was another reason that he couldn't think of. Or it was a combination of the two. The truth did not matter much to him regardless.
He much preferred it this way. He might be in a new body with warped memories of his past, he still had enough to have a decent understanding of himself. So he knew that if he found out what his potential was, it would greatly affect him in some way. If it was two low he would have been discouraged somewhat and if it was too high he likely would not work as hard as he would otherwise. Maybe that was why the rune prevented him from seeing it, it was a subconscious choice.
Choosing not to focus on the potential too much, he focused on looking deeper into the skill to where his talents might lay. This proved to yield far better results. The questions marks broke apart and warped into a data list full of information and percentages. While he could understand the information as it was it would take to long to parse through so he willed it to a more simplistic format that showed only his talents and affinities.
