"Last night... thank you."
Panam really wanted to express something more, but she couldn't find the right words.
Her usual fiery temper was nowhere to be seen.
Right now, all she wanted was for the ground to open up and swallow her whole.
Whatever happened last night was still vividly clear in her mind.
She could still feel the touch on her lips.
And then there was Alex Carter, who had calmly taken the situation in stride and kept his gaze respectful.
But then again...
It was fortunate that Alex was in the car at the time.
Otherwise, she...
Seeing the shyness and embarrassment on Panam's face, Alex smiled and said, "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone about what happened last night."
"Let's keep it as our little secret."
"Come on, there's a motel across the road. Let's go have a drink to celebrate."
Saying this, Alex took the coat off the car, tossed it aside, and settled back into the passenger seat.
With Alex changing the subject, Panam seemed to relax noticeably.
"We got the car and goods back, and I took out Nash and Acklow. That definitely calls for a celebration."
"Vroom..."
With a press of the accelerator, the Outlaw roared toward the motel.
The two places weren't far apart.
Plus, it was all Badlands territory, devoid of traffic rules.
In just a few minutes, Alex and Panam reached the bar above the motel.
Even though it was late at night, the place was still bustling with customers.
"Alex, your plan was brilliant. We nearly wiped out those Scav bastards."
Panam, having regained her composure, downed her drink in one go, excitement clear on her face.
The Aldecaldos and the Scavs had been mortal enemies for who knows how long.
She never expected such a decisive victory this time.
Sol and the others were probably celebrating back at camp too, she thought.
Alex smiled and said, "Just a bit of clever thinking. But don't get complacent."
"As long as there are major clans around, the Scavs won't disappear completely."
"Don't worry, that cautious Sol will handle it," Panam pouted.
She wasn't sure when Sol had become so cautious.
Though she understood why, it wasn't her style.
"In breaking news, we've just learned that Chief Executive Lucius Rhyne was found dead in his home last night, reportedly due to a malfunction in his arterial prosthetic."
"Further details will be provided by this station."
Watching the news on the bar's TV, Alex rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
Lucius Rhyne's death might seem trivial, but it was an important storyline.
It would lead to River Ward, the straightforward detective, and the investigation plotline.
And also to mayoral candidate Jefferson Peralez and his wife Elizabeth Peralez.
Alex wasn't planning on pursuing River's storyline; it didn't hold much value for him.
But Jefferson, the candidate, was an intriguing point to consider.
In essence, Jefferson was an oddity in Night City—a genuine idealist.
His goal was to ensure that all children from poor families received an education and a chance at a better life.
But in Night City, good people rarely met good ends.
At least, that's how it went in the game.
In the end, Jefferson either had his memory tampered with, becoming a puppet, or vanished mysteriously.
But the situation was different now; maybe... he could change something.
Alex took a thoughtful sip of his drink.
Seeing Alex lost in thought, Panam tapped her bottle against his glass.
"Alex, what's on your mind?"
"Ah, nothing, just thinking about what's next."
Alex shook his head and drank the tequila from his glass.
Panam finished the rest of her beer and stood up.
"What about the Kang Tao team? Don't worry, I have an idea, but it's still rough. I need to think it over."
"I think we should get a room here and stay for now. We started late, and we don't want to be seen. What do you think?"
For Panam's suggestion, Alex wholeheartedly agreed.
This was a perfect opportunity to build rapport!
"Cough cough... Alright, let's get started..."
"Noah, give me a double room."
Before Alex could finish speaking, Panam had already booked the room.
Alex was slightly taken aback.
Usually, this was the moment where he would have been given a choice between one or two rooms.
Noticing Alex's gaze, Panam explained somewhat hastily, "Noah only has double rooms here. It'd be wasteful for us to take two rooms."
"Oh~ I see." A knowing smile appeared on Alex's face.
As the saying goes, explanation often means there's something to hide.
What should have been his choice turned into Panam's initiative.
It seemed that last night's incident had actually worked in his favor, boosting Panam's goodwill toward him significantly.
After receiving the room information, Panam, pretending not to notice Alex's gaze, hurriedly walked outside.
"Let's head to the room. It's almost dawn."
"Coming!"
