Chapter 36: bloody speech

Dasch: i don't know what to say.

Dude: that's when we shut up.

Dasch: well, still i do wanna talk and mess around.

Dude: you know you can just keep talking then. like you just did.

Dasch: it's just that i'm little bothered that i don't have anything splendidly talkworthy.

Dude: well, i can say that the talk is still going so maybe you're doing just fine.

Dasch: well perhaps anything we talk is all talkworthy. just by mere fact that it's a talk.

Dude: yeah i don't think we need any fancy or delicate requirements. they would actually make talks less liberating or entertaining. do we really want any such stupid rules or restrictions.

Dasch: well we all cry out about freedom of speech every day. so i guess none of us want any of that will undermine it.

Dude: come to think of it. isn't freedom enforcing us to be always free about our speech.

Dasch: no that would be a paradox. freedom is just about being free to talk and chat.

Dude: what if we speak so freely that we forget how to limit our speaking.

Dasch: i mean if we spoke truly freely, we would always speak freely within the limits we set for ourselves.

Dude: so freedom of speech isn't just about speaking freely at maximal velocity or force?

Dasch: i mean if that was their intention i guess that's what they wanted and so that would also be a freedom of speech. but think about it, there is no such thing as free speech at maximum freedom. what do you even mean by maximal free speech. how would you even go about measuring how free a speech is? there is no way for us to know a speech is at maximum freedom. we do not know what freedom is the fullest.

Dasch: i guess the more free, the more you can speak. So like you can say more topics than someone who has less freedom.

Dude: yes, okay. i get that. yet, that's just between those two. think about a third person who has more freedom than the two. after that, add two more. after that, add three more. after that, keep repeating to add more and more. we will end up with a crowd of people who are more or less free than others. in that case, measuring freedom would be nothing more than just comparing and contrasting with other people. there will always more people who can either speak more or less than you.

Dasch: but then, to go off of that, maybe the person who can say the most will have the most freedom and so that person will have the maximum freedom of speech.

Dude: but wait, no. remember we can always introduce more people with more freedom. so what we think is the maximum freedom will keep increasing.

Dasch: then why don't we just get rid of that system just by introducing people who can speak about everything. because in this case, these people will have equal freedom while being able to talk about everything. so, guess what, these people will have maximum freedom of speech simultaneously.

Dude: okay, that can be imagined. good job and you have my respect to make my previous example destroyed. still though, if we have these multiple individuals who can speak about everything, what does it mean that they can say about everything? yes, i do understand that if they can talk about everything that is out there in this world, it means they have ability to talk about the all available topics out there. that's because everything basically captures every damn thing in this universe. but what i don't get is, even though it's possible to think that these people will have the greatest amount and variety of topics to talk about, how do we know that they will be able to speak about them in the freest manner possible? for example, person number one may talk about flower. however, person number two may talk about flower much better than person number one. so all i mean to say is, because they have different speaking skills, even though they have same freedom of speech, one might speak more freely than others because of their better speaking skills. from this angle, just because you have most many things to talk about, they may not be able to talk about them to their fullest due to their different speaking abilities.

Dasch: jesus, you spoke so long that i think you just stole my freedom of speech as we talk about it. but anyways, so having most things to talk about doesn't guarantee highest freedom of speech. well, i thought it got us pretty close to it. but then you freakin ruined it. yet, i cannot get angry about that. you did your due diligence and i admit you have a point. and plus, while you were saying all that, i also realized that everything will always change too because humanity or this universe will keep making new discoveries or make new things that weren't there. So, unless we can keep updating people with the knowledge of everything consistently every split second, some people's version of everything will be larger or smaller than others' versions of everything.

Dude: you know however at the same time. i wonder if this mad long discussion really is what freedom of speech is about. you know when they say if you can't explain it sweet and simple, it probably is some sign of bullshit.

Dasch: maybe we can't totally dismiss how we ended up with where we are here. but maybe freedom of speech can certainly be understood without all that endless jargon up there we've done thus far.

Dude: you know screw everything we said before or i said before. freedom of speech is perhaps just nothing more than just freedom to speak.

Dasch: you literally just changed few alphabets around to define it. so that must be pretty damn simple definition. in that respect, it might be not so bullshit.

Dude: you know what else. it just might be being able to say whatever however i want. it doesn't matter how much you can talk about things. it's got nothing to do with what topics you talk about either. whether you can say whatever you want in any way you want. that's all that is. if that gets disrupted or messed around by someone other than you, your freedom is being messed around with.

Dasch: you know what else. freedom of speech also includes not saying what i don't want to say.

right now, my ears gonna start bleeding so i really have to stop this talk about freedom of speech. your speech is threatening my hearing.

Dude: the last point well said to end our convo. period. you have all the right to stop speaking with me and shut up and leave.

Dasch bolts out the room, never looking back. Dude scratches his head.

Dude: i think at least for this convo, i had more freedom perhaps. hmm.

In the kitchen corner, Dasch lies down on his side. His eyes unblinking as if his soul has been sucked out of him. His soul wandering next to those that drafted declaration of independence.
