Chapter 2: Thousand Deaths Bai Xiaotong
Chapter 2: Thousand Deaths Bai Xiaotong
"Oho, isn't it those short clips about self-sufficient farming? Even the army is interested in adapting them. Why don't you—"
"Uh-huh!" Bai Xiaotong rolled her eyes upon hearing the word army and pretended she hadn't heard anything.
"They use freezing and drying methods to preserve foods. What's so cool is that they made almost everything with their own hands!"
This time she wasn't faking her awe.
As for someone who had never stepped into the kitchen or ever tried feeding cows and chickens, she thought that it was a breath of fresh air compared to slaying heinous-looking zombies and collecting their nuclei.
Before the apocalyptic era, she only knew how to buy something from the store and eat it without a care, thinking it would take a giant piece of equipment to make everything work. But those people who weren't even able to awaken their powers were doing it so easily!
"It's quite amusing, so I tried doing it for fun and got hooked up with it."
"En."
Old Bai nodded and with a longing gaze he watched as his granddaughter eagerly told him stories like the time had stopped and travelled back in time.
Back when the era was normal and everyone could have peace of mind.
Old Bai thought of the happy times together with his wife and daughter-in-law laughing along while putting down the plates neatly on the table.
Giggling at the helpless expression of his son while Tong-Tong was making him dress up like one of her dolls.
The thought of them becoming only a part of his memory made the Old man grow sentimental and crestfallen.
He wasn't able to protect his wife during the end of times descended. It was also him who drove his son and daughter-in-law in their demise by recruiting them to the Army after awakening. Leaving the world and their poor daughter so prematurely.
Tears welled up in his eyes, and fell down like a stream one after another.
"G-Grandpa! Are you alright? Why are you crying? Is there something wrong? Are you hurt somewhere?" Bai Xiaotong's heart skipped a beat and moved to support him very quickly.
"Tong Tong, grandpa is so useless. I was so weak to save anyone. Please forgive, grandpa. Sorry..." Old Bai uttered, shaking.
"I'm sorry for failing to rescue your Mommy and Daddy. I know you miss them, as the elder of the family I should be beside you while growing up but I chose my duty over my family. I'm letting you down again."
He wanted to kneel and ask forgiveness. But the girl quickly caught his hand and steadied his footing.
Sigh.
"Grandpa, what are you saying? You did nothing wrong. You did the best you could to protect me and everyone inside the City from ferocious beasts. I don't blame you and I know Mommy and Daddy never did." She squeezed his trembling hands softly. "I just want you to be safe."
"And, Grandpa wants to see you happy."
Old Bai put his hand over her shoulders and drew a deep breath, eyeing her with seriousness. It was so sudden that Bai Xiaotong instinctively straightened her back as if she had gone back to her military days, and was face to face with her strict officer.
"Grandpa, I..."
"Tong Tong, Grandpa doesn't want to meddle with your affairs. It's just that I sincerely hope to see you live well and start your own family."
"Sigh, these old bones are beginning to rattle and ache during the cold winter. I don't know how much time I have to stay in this world."
"My precious granddaughter, I know this is too much but please grant Grandpa's wish. I hope to see you meet a good husband and form your own family while I still have the strength in my back to carry your many children."
Bai Xiaotong: "..."
Blink.
Blink— blink.
"What the fu—uff!"

Back in the restaurant, Bai Xiaotong threw a brief glance at the menu, though her appetite had long since disappeared. She sighed and shifted in her chair, the delicate fabric of her dress catching slightly against the smooth leather.
It had been three hours, and still no sign of the person her grandfather had insisted she meet. He had made the reservation, handpicked the date, and emphasized how important this was.
But now, it all seemed like a cruel joke. Her lips tightened, a soft frown curling the edges of her mouth as she picked up a forked and harshly stabbed wooden table.
"He's late. He's fucking late! Ha... I see, what a spoiled young master. If I ever see him, I'm gonna kill him and use his carcass as a fertilizer to grow my Rafflesia plant!"
Clang!
"I'm sorry but the entire restaurant is reserved— sir? Are you okay? You look pale— sir! Medic!"
Bai Xiaotong could faintly hear some noises from behind and she didn't bother listening to the rest when her mobile suddenly rang and flashed an unregistered number on the screen.
Seeing that it was from an unknown caller, she didn't bother to accept and hastily declined before adding the number to her phone's blacklist.
"I just changed my number, yet a sneaky mongrel already sniffed it?! Wow, these annoying secretaries are really working hard for their bonuses! Did they quit their job in the intelligence department to suck up with some rich conglomerates?"
Bai Xiaotong recalled the countless times she had been harassed and disturbed by greedy capitalists after leaving the military. Some attempted to win her favor with flattery, while others shamelessly leveraged her grandfather, claiming their requests were for the country's prosperity and peace.
Do they think she's running a charity? Or do they believe she owes the country simply for being alive and awakening an ultra-rare skill?
Stop bullshiting!
Even if she awakened an unusual skill that was so different from the usual miscellaneous or elemental powers of other people, the avatar skill of an immortal cultivator is not a heaven-sent skill. Or maybe it was, just blame it all on her rotten luck for getting a malicious avatar of all righteous cultivators she could have.
No one knows it but If she really wields the Heavenly Demon Divine Arts, she'd be influenced by its savage nature and who knows what she might do?
