Chapter 10: Jerome's Revenge
Kent Farm.
Two police officers left the farm at a loss, having taken statements from several people, but the final results were somewhat unsatisfactory.
Just as Clark had said, it felt like a supernatural event.
Clark followed his father, Jonathan, back inside the house.
"What happened?" Jonathan's wife, and Clark's adoptive mother, Martha, looked worriedly at the father and son. "I heard the police talking about a school fight. Clark, did you get into a fight with a classmate?"
Clark shook his head. "No, not me, Mom. I didn't fight."
Jonathan, however, seized the opportunity to speak. "Then who broke Whitney's arm, Clark? I can see the guilt in your eyes."
As the son he had raised himself, Jonathan was all too familiar with Clark's micro-expressions.
"And why are you associating with the Luthor Family?" Jonathan rubbed his forehead, a headache forming. "The Luthors are all selfish and devious people."
"Jonathan!" Martha gave her husband a displeased look. "You can't talk about someone you've never met like that."
"No, quite the opposite." Jonathan shook his head, his gaze falling on Clark. "This afternoon, when I went to town to buy groceries, I ran into Lana Lang's aunt. She told me about that younger Luthor son. He took Clark speeding this morning and even almost hit a school bus!"
"But he didn't hit it, Dad. Jino had it under control." Clark raised his head, instinctively refuting. He had witnessed Jino's terrifying reaction speed; avoiding a school bus was as easy as breathing for him.
"Jino." Jonathan repeated the name. "Your new friend's name is Jino Luthor, right?"
Jonathan shook his head, a headache returning. "But that kind of behavior completely disregards other people's safety, Clark. It's reckless."
"If possible, I hope you stay away from that guy."
Even without having met Jino, Jonathan could deduce Jino's character just from his behavior in Smallville—an attitude of extreme indifference towards strangers.
He didn't want Clark associating with someone like that and being influenced into becoming an irresponsible person.
"Yeah, you're always telling me what to do, aren't you?" Clark hung his head, his face full of impatience as he counted off his father's rules on his fingers.
"Can't play football, can't run track."
Clark looked up, somewhat rebellious. "I'm already trying so hard to be a normal person, Dad, but now even who I can be friends with has to be according to your wishes?"
"Clark, I didn't mean…"
Jonathan tried to explain, but Clark didn't want to hear it. He stood up and went upstairs, leaving the food on his plate untouched.
"Jonathan."
His wife, Martha, gripped Jonathan's shoulder, her tone reproachful. "You're too hard on him."
Jonathan sighed, his expression complex. "I know, but I'm more afraid of him being unable to control his abilities and exposing them to the world."
Tuesday.
Early morning.
Jino and Lex said their goodbyes. One was heading to high school, while the other intended to inspect the Luthor Family's chemical plant in Smallville.
Lex drove his bright blue sports car speeding down the country road. Billboards and bushes on either side of the road quickly receded past the car windows.
"Got a cigarette?" Lex held the steering wheel with one hand and reached into his pocket with the other, intending to light up and relax.
Bang!
A loud explosion came from not far away. Lex looked up to see a skinny young man suddenly standing in the middle of the road, giving him a strange smile.
"Your time is up, Lex!"
The young man raised his hands, and instantly countless electric currents covered his arms.
"Hmph!"
The young man let out a low grunt, and thick, snake-like currents struck the sports car's tires.
Bang, bang!
The tires burst, and the sports car lost control, hurtling towards the side of the road at an extremely high speed.
"Oh, sh*t!"
Lex slammed the steering wheel, but the sports car still crashed uncontrollably through the guardrail by the bridge.
Splash!
The iron railing, broken into several pieces, fell into the freezing river water along with the sports car.
At the same time Lex plunged into the lake, Clark, who was using Super Speed to travel nearby, happened to be passing by that very road.
He witnessed a man who could generate electricity with his hands blast a sports car into a large lake, then flee the murder scene at high speed.
I have to save him.
Clark stopped, then plunged into the lake without hesitation, swimming towards the bottom.
Inside the sports car at that moment, Darkness, coldness, oppression—these were Lex's first sensations.
Countless amounts of lake water flowed in through the car door seams. The once valuable sports car had now become a watery cage, threatening his life.
"Mmmph!"
Lex's mouth and nose filled with lake water. He struggled to open his eyes but could only see a blurry, chaotic mess.
After choking on several gulps of lake water, the inability to breathe made Lex's vision gradually blur. As it blurred, it was as if a figure slowly swam towards him.
"Plop!"
Clark leapt into the water, cutting through it like a torpedo to swim to the car.
Glancing at Lex, unconscious from choking and lack of oxygen inside the car, Clark reached out and gripped the car roof. With a powerful tug, the sturdy roof was torn open by the immense force, revealing a large hole.
Clark reached in, grasped Lex's collar, and pulled him out of the lake.
He laid the unconscious Lex flat on the grass by the lake, then bent down to listen to Lex's heartbeat.
The heartbeat was weak. Clark didn't hesitate; he pried open Lex's mouth and began performing CPR, using the first-aid knowledge he learned from his father, Jonathan, when he was a child.
"Don't die, hang in there!"
Following the first-aid instructions, Clark alternated between giving Lex breaths and pressing on Lex's chest with interlocked hands.
Under Clark's continuous compressions, the unconscious Lex soon opened his mouth and spewed out a large amount of lake water.
Seeing Lex awaken, Clark's face also showed a look of relief.
"Cough, cough, cough!"
The awakened Lex coughed violently. He slowly opened his eyes, and what greeted him was a young, innocent face.
"You saved me?" Lex stared up at Clark.
"Yes, you looked like you needed help. I saw a strange guy attack you," Clark said, frowning, recounting what he had seen earlier—that figure who had suddenly appeared.
"That's right, this was a premeditated murder." Lex smiled nonchalantly, but in his heart, he remembered Jino's warning from last night. Perhaps the person who just attacked him was Jerome, who had suddenly disappeared not long ago and gained Super Speed.
Smallville High School.
In the hallway, Jino walked towards his classroom, one hand holding his backpack slung behind him, the other in his pocket, ignoring the strange looks from the surrounding students.
"Beep beep."
Jino picked up his phone and pressed the answer button.
Clark's voice came from the other end: "Jino, your brother fell into the water!"
