Demon Slayer: The Great Swordsman's System, Disciple of Yoriichi

Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Si Shu the Babysitter, The Death of Ubuyashiki

"The demons here... are all dead?!"

Walking slowly through Yushui, Tamayo's beautiful face was filled with shock. What on earth happened here? And who killed them? There was no pity in her eyes, only curiosity and confusion. Although she was also a demon, she felt not a shred of goodwill towards her supposed kin. In fact, she wished that every last demon would disappear from the world.

Suddenly spotting a human figure in the distance, Tamayo quickly turned and walked in another direction. She was afraid she wouldn't be able to suppress her craving for human blood and do something she would regret.

Walking to a corner, she suddenly furrowed her lovely brows. "Is there something you need?" Though no one was around, she spoke as if in conversation. "Yes, I understand."

After a moment, the conversation seemed to end, and a look of disgust appeared on her face. Though extremely reluctant, she proceeded to carry out the instructions in her mind.

Meanwhile, Si Shu and Yoriichi had arrived at the foot of a mountain. Following the direction of the rising cooking smoke, they found a small courtyard. Pointing to a house within it, Yoriichi said, "If I'm not mistaken, they should be in there."

Approaching the house, Si Shu saw a woman lying asleep inside. The baby, who should have been lulled to sleep, had somehow woken up and was crying loudly. Faced with the wailing child, both Si Shu and Yoriichi were at a loss. Neither of them had any experience in this area; they were complete novices when it came to childcare. And so, the two of them just stared at each other, one big pair of eyes and one small.

"You go," Yoriichi finally said. "If she doesn't listen, then I'll step in."

With his master's order, Si Shu had no choice but to bite the bullet and walk over. Surprisingly, the moment the baby girl saw him, she stopped crying.

Babysitting... doesn't seem that hard? The thought flashed through his mind, and he suddenly felt he could handle it. Seeing the baby's flailing little hands, he instinctively brought his face closer.

The next second, a pair of tender little hands grabbed his face and began to pinch without hesitation.

"Hiss~" Si Shu sucked in a sharp breath of air from the pain. Treating his face as a toy, the baby played for a good while before finally letting go.

I was wrong. I apologize for my earlier thoughts. Rubbing his reddened cheeks, Si Shu wished he could slap his past self.

Yawning, the now-tired baby fell asleep again. Looking at the peacefully sleeping child in his arms, Si Shu felt as if the previous incident had been a dream.

"Mr. Yoriichi?" a voice called out, and a man ran over from a short distance away. He had black hair, deep red eyes, and a cheerful smile. Si Shu recognized him at once.

He was the ancestor of Tanjiro Kamado, Sumiyoshi Kamado.

Yoriichi nodded, his expression unchanging. Aside from Si Shu, it was rare for anyone to see his emotions fluctuate.

"It's been a long time! I'll go make some tea." Sumiyoshi put down the basket of charcoal he had just bought and prepared to serve his guest. Just then, he noticed Si Shu. Seeing the harmonious atmosphere between him and Yoriichi, a curious thought popped into his head. Could it be...?

As if guessing his thoughts, Yoriichi shook his head. "Si Shu is my disciple, but..." He reached out and stroked his student's head, a rare tenderness in his eyes. "...he is like a son to me."

Gently laying the sleeping child down, Si Shu said to Sumiyoshi, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Sumiyoshi. I am Si Shu, Master Yoriichi's disciple."

"So you're Mr. Yoriichi's disciple!" Sumiyoshi beamed and patted his chest. "Hello, Si Shu! I'm Sumiyoshi Kamado, a charcoal seller." After the greeting, he bustled into the kitchen. A short while later, he came out with a small tray carrying several cups of hot tea and some snacks.

"I'm so sorry to have a guest help me look after my child," he said, looking at the sleeping baby with an apologetic smile.

"Don't mind it. You must be exhausted. Raising a child is hard work," Yoriichi said, taking a sip of tea. "We'll leave after we finish our tea. We can't stay here and eat for free."

"Of course not! You're our savior. Without you, this child would never have been born safely," Sumiyoshi said, a look of panic on his face at the thought of Yoriichi leaving so soon.

Yoriichi continued to drink his tea, not answering. The atmosphere became a bit awkward. Sumiyoshi tilted his head, trying to read something on Yoriichi's face, but his expression remained as placid as ever.

Unable to watch any longer, Si Shu spoke up. "We still have matters to report, so we won't disturb you any longer, Mr. Sumiyoshi. If there's a chance in the future, we will visit again."

Sumiyoshi blinked, looking as if he didn't quite understand but somehow did. "By the way, Mr. Yoriichi, you finally don't have to worry about a successor anymore!" He smiled at Si Shu, genuinely happy that his friend had found someone to carry on his legacy. "I was actually planning to offer to pass down your story for you, even though I'm just a charcoal seller." He scratched his head, a bit embarrassed.

Knowing his dear friend was thinking of him, Yoriichi shook his head slightly. "Sumiyoshi, you don't need to see me as someone special. You and I are both just grains of sand in history..." Leaving those words hanging, he drank the last of his tea. "Seeing you so happy has put my mind at ease."

With that, he walked outside. Si Shu offered a slight bow to Sumiyoshi and followed him.

After leaving Sumiyoshi's house, the two of them headed straight back to the Demon Slayer Corps to report to Kagaya Ubuyashiki. However, the moment they stepped inside, their attention was drawn to a funeral procession up ahead.

Upon asking, they received shocking news.

The master of the Demon Slayer Corps, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, had passed away yesterday due to his worsening condition. He was twenty-two years old.

His successor was his eldest son, the six-year-old Ubuyashiki Nozomi.

The image of the young boy flashed in Si Shu's mind. He was surprised; the boy who looked four or five was actually six. It seemed the curse had affected the physical bodies and appearances of the Ubuyashiki clan.

Arriving at the estate to report, Si Shu knocked on the door.

"Come in." A tender, childish voice answered. It was Ubuyashiki Nozomi.

Pushing the door open, Si Shu saw Nozomi sitting upright in the center of the room.
