Chapter 45: Chapter 45 – Unlikely Allies at Butterfly Mansion
After finding Mitsuri and Yushiro, Yohan shared the details of his recent conversation with the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, Ubuyashiki, and mentioned that they were planning to head to Butterfly Mansion next.
"Great! Great!" Mitsurii's eyes lit up the moment she heard they were going to Butterfly Mansion. She was thrilled—she hadn't seen Kanae and the others for a long time since their last parting. Now that they were going to reunite, Shinobu couldn't be happier.
Tamayo and Yushiro didn't have any objections, as they were ready to follow Yohan's lead at the Demon Slayer Corps and simply wanted to observe what would happen next.
"Alright, let's go then."
Butterfly Mansion was located near the headquarters of the Demon Slayer Corps, built in a similar architectural style. The tall wooden buildings towered before them, exuding an aura of wealth and refinement.
The mansion was just as grand as the Demon Slayer Corps headquarters. Given the size, Yohan couldn't help but think: The Kocho Sisters must have really become wealthy... Did my previous funds get reduced?
Lost in thought, Yohan stared at the mansion.
A girl with a butterfly hairpin and twin ponytails was cleaning in front of the mansion's gates.
"Who are you?"
"Hello, I'm Yohan. We've come to see Kanae Kocho. Could you let her know we've arrived?"
"Oh! You're the Yohan that Kanae-san mentioned!" the girl replied, visibly excited.
"I'm Aoi Kanzaki, and I'm one of the caretakers here at Butterfly Mansion."
Aoi eagerly led the group inside, and soon they were reunited with Kanae, Kanae, and Kanao Tsuyuri, who was also present.
"Mitsuri!"
"Kanae!"
The moment they saw each other, both Shinobu and Kanae, with their straightforward personalities, immediately called out to one another and embraced joyfully.
"Welcome to Butterfly Mansion, Yohan," kanae greeted, though her greeting was more subdued compared to Shinobu's. Nonetheless, the warmth in her expression was clear.
"Kanae, it's been a while," Yohan said with a smile, exchanging greetings with everyone.
Even Kanao, who wasn't one for words, gave Yohan a small wave, her expression showing that she remembered him well.
"Kanae, the reason I'm here..."
Without waiting for Kanae to speak, Yohan quickly explained the purpose of his visit and what he had discussed with Ubuyashiki. Since the Hashira would soon know of this, Yohan didn't see any reason to keep it a secret.
"Is that so?" Kanae's initial disappointment at not having been the sole reason for Yohan's visit quickly shifted as she became fully absorbed in the gravity of what he had said.
"The Blue Spider Lily, Kibutsuji Muzan, Tamayo..."
kanae's mind was reeling from the influx of information, but being one of the Hashira, she quickly adapted and accepted it.
"So these two are...?" kanae asked, turning her gaze to Yohan's companions.
"Tamayo, Yushiro, you can show them," Yohan said.
Tamayo and Yushiro demonstrated their transformation into demons. Their eyes turned a blood-red hue, and their fingers and teeth showed clear signs of their demonic nature.
Kanae observed them closely, confirming their identities.
"So, Yohan, you're suggesting we let them stay here at Butterfly Mansion?"
"That's right, Kanae."
"I can assure you that both of them are demons who do not consume humans. They only require a small amount of blood bags."
"And I've already discussed this with your leader. If you're unsure, you can always ask him for confirmation," Yohan explained, reassuring Kanae of their safety.
Seeing Yohan's earnest explanation, Kanae's expression softened, and a smile crept onto her face. "Yohan, you don't need to explain so much. If they're your trusted friends, I'm more than happy to trust you as well."
Kanae wasn't planning to ask Ubuyashiki about this—she trusted Yohan's judgment. Having spent time with him before, she knew him well. Besides, she had recently received news about a Hashira meeting to be called by the leader, and she guessed it must be related to this very matter.
"Alright then, Tamayo, Yushiro. Please follow me, and I'll arrange rooms for you both."
Kanae led Tamayo and Yushiro to their rooms.
"Wait, Yohan!"
The moment Kanae left, the ever-tough Shinobu grabbed Yohan's sleeve, her voice sharp with confusion.
"Why did you bring two demons to Butterfly Mansion?" she demanded.
"Shinobu, calm down," Kanae said, trying to pull Kanae back as she unsheathed her blade.
Shinobu had been on the edge since she first saw Tamayo and Yushiro transform, her anger nearly bubbling over. If Kanae hadn't been there to hold her back, Shinobu might have acted sooner. She had been raised with the belief that demons were nothing more than monsters that should be destroyed, after all.
Her parents had died at the hands of demons, and ever since, Shinobu had harbored an intense hatred for them. Her sister had tried to teach her compassion, arguing that demons, like humans, were living beings and deserving of empathy. But Shinobu always believed that demons should be eradicated, without exception. That's how she had been trained.
Though Shinobu trusted Yohan, this was a line she couldn't easily cross, no matter how much she cared for him.
