Chapter 11: The Blessing We Seek
Keahi's P.O.V.
Today, the bitter memory resurfaced—the main reason for my marriage,Our marriage felt solitary and in peril, and what did I do? Nothing. Just as I did nothing when we lost her.
Today, I understood why noble families like ours, the Ignis, don't deserve a girl, why we are cursed.
"Son, promise me you will break that curse," my dying father urged.
"I promise," I vowed.
Everything began from that point. The Ignis bloodline was cursed at an unknown time, destined never to have a girl. Having more than one child is a rarity, and having a girl is almost impossible. The more noble the blood, the lower the birth rate. No noble house was left untouched by this fate, except for "The Rhyssa" – the only Marquess whose pure lineage is said to be descended from a blessed woman, the only bloodline truly blessed by The Great Holy Ruler.
My eyes were set on the current heir, Svetlana Ty Rhyssa, the oldest daughter.
But somehow, my path crossed with Veridia Rhyssa, the second daughter. Without realizing it, we fell for each other. She was a perfect peace, a perfect home for me. It didn't take us long to get married. Everything felt so great that I began to fear the worst, and it happened.
Veridia gave birth to twins: one boy and one girl. No one was happier than me. They were so cute; both had my eyes. Agni had his mother's hair, but "Ryza" had mine; she was just like me.
We lost her on the same day; she couldn't survive because of the curse.
I was caught in a grand, delusional belief that perhaps Veridia's blessing would break the curse, but the curse consumed the blessing instead.
I blamed myself. No one was to blame but me and my selfishness.
I thanked the Goddess for giving me Veridia, even though as a mother, she was suffering more than I was, yet she still helped me. Those six years felt like hell. Then, like a miracle, Veridia became pregnant again. The pregnancy was too short for my anxiety to truly set in.
But she arrived like a Phoenix, a true Ignis, with the brightest red eyes and the same hair. The happiness and the fear returned. But her smiles, her bright eyes, everything erased every fear. This time, the blessing won, and no one was happier than me.
She was full of smiles, without a single worry in the world. But one day, around the age of adolescence, something changed within her. She was still smiling, but her eyes were no longer the same; they were dim, and her boundless energy was subdued. We didn't understand what was happening. Even though her behavior was consistent, she felt more… Mature. I never liked those changes. So, we tried to bring back her old self, but nothing worked until I suggested a training regimen for her, alongside Agni.
Those eyes began to shine again. I never realized she wanted that, but why didn't she tell us? Why couldn't she bring herself to demand this from her own parents? That pained me with no end.
Nevertheless, she enjoyed the training time; her eyes were always shining from then on. She was a good learner, making me proud every time.
But they dimmed again. On her seventh birthday, she was happy, but there was something I couldn't, or we couldn't, understand. She felt sad for some reason; it didn't make any sense. Don't kids feel happiness on their birthday? And on top of that, she was trying to hide it from us from her parents which was the most saddening thing. But after the power ceremony, she came back like a playful river with endless energy, full of life. I thought everything would be fine...
Those staring, shining eyes, so bright they seem to be tightly shut on her face, her glowing face, as white as paper.
The fear surfaced again. And I will make them pay the price for these deeds.
