Chapter 13: Different Personalities
At the Palace
"What are you doing in my chamber?" Prince Ashwin asked Mari when he entered.
"It's not like I came for the first time." She made herself comfortable on the sofa while playing with some blue stone that Ashwin had no idea why she was keeping it, nevertheless he didn't ask.
Ashwin shook his head and sat on his study table with some kind of paper or book in his hand.
"So..." Mari asked him in a rude manner. Ashwin just rolled his eyes but didn't stop writing.
"So what?"
"What about that girl?"
"What girl?"
"Don't you have any idea about that incident? I am asking about that pinky girl"
"No, Mari, I don't. Just like you, I have no clue what's going on, and thanks to you, this matter has become so big beyond my control, alright."
"Me?" Mari pointed her fingers at herself and asked in disbelief. "What did I do? Why are you blaming me? You are the one who vomited in front of father."
"First of all," Ashwin stopped writing and looked straight towards her. "I did it all because of you!"
Mari scoffed at him.
"I know you very well. What are you capable of doing? If I didn't vomit in front of father, you could have done worse than a royal court punishment."
She cut him off," whom you are saving, Ashwin?" she asked him sharply. "Were you really helping those victims, or just that pinky girl?"
"What? Why are you seeing me through those criminal glasses? Of course, I was saving the victims."
"Were you? I don't believe you,Ashwin. Why didn't you let me handle that when you know about me so well? What she did was not just a crime, but a horrible thing. Plus, even though she was just a little girl, her attitude was that of a true criminal." Ashwin can literally see a deep wave in her ocean-like eyes.
"First, calm down," he tried,
But,
"Stop it, brother. You said you told father because of me or specifically my attitude, but tell me if it wasn't for me, what would be your stand on this?" This time she raised herself from the sofa and her voice.
He couldn't answer, or maybe he was too stunned to answer.
"I..." he tried, but didn't know what to say.
"You what?" Mari mocked him. "Let me tell you what you could have done. You may have helped her, 'that girl' Arya, and maybe you could also have broken that illusion and warned that 'pinky girl.' But that's it, nothing else. Say it, brother, if I am wrong."
'Yes,' that's exactly what he could have done, and for the first time, he realized that he was wrong to do so. It's not just a crime, but a crime done by a royal.
But that he already has done, not now, but before, and for the first time he realized why he came back.
"Mari, why are you so….. (different)?"
"What, brother? Complete your damn sentence, I dare you! What she did wasn't a little bullying but a criminal offence, she literally offended every single noble, can't you see that ? what is the true way to handle that matter, tell me brother?" she asked him in a challenging tone.
He knows he was wrong and thanks to her he got his answer...
But
He shook his head. "Nothing, I think you aren't wrong, but let's stop. Look, you should go back, I am busy right now"
"No." She lies down again comfortably like she wasn't mad in the first place.
"What? Why? I told you I am busy and don't have time for this, and about that incident, the court will be handling that, so don't get into this mess."
"Brother, I think you forgot something. I don't follow orders from anyone, especially from you, and I love playing in mud." She smiled widely.
'The damn word again.'
Ashwin pinch between the eyebrows and sigh.
"Mari, it's a request, please go back."
"Request denied, brother."
"Why are you doing this? Just leave me alone..." she cut him off.
"Brother, why are you using your special white pen?" She suddenly asked, but didn't try to look at the papers.
White pen a pen design for a owner, nobody except for the owner couldn't see what was written by that pen .
He hurriedly shut his notebook.
It is his special diary, which she or anyone else doesn't know.
But now
"There's nothing special, you should leave, don't you want to go to the fair?"
"Fair? No, I am more interested in what you are writing." She answered too innocently.
'I am doomed, I must save it with life,' he thought, but still tried to divert her interest.
"Are you sure you don't want to go?I mean you love seeing fastival"
And it worked, or so he thought.
"Yes, I am going, plus I have many things to do this year, and I was thinking about making few friends, brother, what do you think about Arya?" Her eyes were filled with mischievousness.
"What about Arya?" He averted his eyes.
"I want her as my friend, so as my brother, what is your take on her?" She gave him a knowing look.
"How would I know? I only seen her for a brief moment just like you" He was looking anywhere but at her.
"Brother, bye..." Mari left the room with lighting speed.
Suddenly
"Wait..." He was too stunned to speak. She was literally too fast to hear him, even if he did she didn't care.
'Well, I hope she doesn't do something beyond my control.'
Mari is like a typhoon no one can predict even if they, she is too fast for them.
This Mari is too different than the Mari he knows.... A unknown thought crossed his mind...
But Ashwin was too busy with his own problems to care about little things, but he knows very well that Mari never did anything small, and this time, it's not just about her, but also about …..
"Arya," he whispered.
'This time I am going to make everything right for you, for us ' he thought.
But the question of Mari making his mind more doubtful of his own decisions.
'Will he really be able to do that or like Mari said, he didn't care about her that deeply or maybe couldn't make a better decision.'
He got his answer but there are more questions waiting for him…
