chapter 10 - One-Day Puppy (8)
Heesung knew that his father had never really liked him, so he stayed quietly inside the house.
His sobbing mother repeatedly stroked Heesung’s cheek, whispered an apology, and then left the house. Sounds of a brief argument between the truck driver and his father drifted in, followed by the loud rumble of the truck’s engine fading away.
After that, the family never came back to pick up Heesung.
Even on the days Heesung ate snacks to his fill and vomited, and on the days he saved snacks for his younger sibling, no one returned. He wanted to call his mother, but there was no working device in the house.
Soon, the poor neighborhood where Heesung lived grew quiet. People hurriedly packed their belongings and left, and red letters spelling “Demolition” were painted on the walls. Even when Heesung went out into the street in broad daylight, the village marked with spray-painted X’s on the walls was silent. Hungry and carrying a few coins, he went out, but the supermarket he often visited was closed, and soon after, the electricity at home was cut off.
There was almost nothing Heesung could do alone. He tried to seek help by going far away, but a pale man with a pot belly tried to forcibly drag him off. Terrified, Heesung barely escaped back home and curled up in a corner.
〈“Mom told me to wait.”〉
From then on, Heesung began to wait for his family without any promise of their return. To conserve his energy, he remained transformed as the puppy. In truth, with no money, there was nothing else he could do.
After several days passed and he lost the strength to move, someone suddenly burst into the house.
〈“What the hell is this little dog? Is it dead?”〉
〈“Isn’t this a dog beastman?”〉
Gangsters entered Heesung’s house with their shoes on, prowling around. Among them was his older brother. When Heesung first saw his brother, he looked younger and more ordinary, but his clothes were exactly those of a gangster.
The gangsters turned the eyes of the dry, dying puppy this way and that.
〈“It’s alive?”〉
〈“What? That tiny thing’s been alive all this time?”〉
The gangsters were about to leave Heesung alone, but for some reason, his brother picked him up and took him away. It was a strange reason — it reminded him of his own childhood.
Heesung stayed there for several days, eating the food he was given and barely regaining his senses.
When Heesung finally returned to human form, he asked with a dry mouth,
〈“Where’s Mom?”〉
An older man beside his brother clicked his tongue and muttered, “Oh dear.”
His brother lightly tapped Heesung’s dry cheek and explained bitterly.
〈“Listen carefully. You’ve been abandoned. Got it?”〉
〈“.......”〉
〈“What should we do with this? Just raise it? It’s quite pretty.”〉
Heesung stood dazed, no matter what his brother said.
He did not cry. He never allowed himself to think he had been abandoned by his family, but lived as if he had graduated from school, accepting calmly that this moment would come someday.
He had learned something from graduating a certain point in life.
If you are sick and weak, you get abandoned by the pack.
His brother told the gang that Heesung might be useful, so they took him in. Other gang members disliked the weak Heesung, but Heesung always tried to be useful.
He never wanted to seem weak to anyone and desperately hid his pain. His words and behavior imitated fighting dogs that never easily bend to the world, and he always hid his weakest sides even from his brother.
Time passed, and Heesung became an adult. He had done his best in the environment he was given.
But Heesung was abandoned once again. His value dropped because he did not act as his brother wanted. He was never someone who would recognize his value in the first place.
Falling into despair, Heesung kept having nightmares even while unconscious.
The nightmares tormented him with mixed horrific memories. He dreamed of someone banging on the door of the house he was left in, someone dark approaching and beating him, forcibly pulling his hand away.
〈“Heesung, you just need to endure it.”〉
In the terrible nightmare, he faced his brother. Standing before him, Heesung hated reality and let tears fall.
It was the quietest night since he had lived with the puppy. Yoon Chiyoung was watching Heesung curled up on the bed, his expression colder than usual.
They found the puppy later than expected.
At least Yoon had kept Park Geontae on watch, so they could follow Kwon Kihyuk’s trail immediately, but the puppy was already covered in wounds.
Yoon had never expected Kwon Kihyuk to crave Heesung that much. Since his father was about to go to prison soon, Yoon thought he would be cautious about his family’s affairs, but Kwon had desperately ignored reality and finally took Heesung far away.
Thankfully, Yoon searched the motel and found Heesung. If he hadn’t, Yoon didn’t want to imagine what might have happened to the puppy. Thinking about it made Yoon frown in displeasure. He had a hard time controlling his emotions, and black wolf ears rose above his head, his sharp fangs painfully piercing his lips.
“......”
Heesung seemed to have fewer injuries or some remaining consciousness, because when he briefly came to, he stubbornly transformed into human form and then collapsed again. But in Yoon’s eyes, Heesung still looked like a small, soft puppy.
Yoon, stroking the white ears rising between Heesung’s black hair, wiped cold sweat from Heesung’s forehead. He groaned painfully as if suffering from recurring nightmares.
“Mom…”
At that moment, Heesung murmured something in his sleep. Yoon, who had been listening to his sleep talk for quite some time, gently touched his clear cheek. He felt heartbroken and suffocated seeing the precious one return injured like this.
As warmth touched his cheek, Heesung whimpered and murmured,
“I’m... not hurt…”
“......”
“Take me... too... I won’t hurt…”
Yoon’s brow twisted in pain. Wolves are normally taught not to show negative emotions on their faces, but this time he couldn’t help it. He could somewhat understand the suffering of the abandoned puppy from Heesung’s words.
Yoon looked quietly down at Heesung and spoke coldly, unexpectedly.
“Who’s going to take you?”
“…Hic…”
“You’re going to live here with me forever now.”
At those firm words, Heesung shut his eyes tight and trembled. He was probably wandering in painful nightmares, but he reached out and tightly grabbed Yoon’s sleeve.
Yoon quietly looked down at that hand and smoothed the black hair covering Heesung’s forehead. Then, this time, he whispered much more gently.
“You’ll just keep being a useless puppy.”
“......”
“A well-fed puppy with a bad temper.”
At those words, Heesung’s expression crumbled as if he was about to cry. But he didn’t wake, curling his body even more and falling asleep. In the dim room, Heesung’s small body lying on the wide bed looked especially fragile.
Yoon held him in his arms as usual and wiped tears from the corner of his eyes. Feeling the warmth, Heesung stopped talking in his sleep and fell into a deep sleep.
Softly.
After confirming Heesung had fallen asleep, Yoon quietly got up.
He didn’t want to leave the sick puppy alone, but a task came to mind. He planned to prepare a special gift for the puppy. Yoon quietly put on his coat and sat in front of the puppy.
“I’ll be right back.”
Whispering softly, Yoon kissed the puppy’s small head and left. It was late at night outside, but he didn’t care. This was the time Yoon was active anyway.
When Heesung woke again, it was early evening after sunset.
Crimson sunlight pierced the house with unusually large windows. Heesung opened his eyes faintly and looked around. Familiar sights inside the house were visible.
‘This is Yoon Chiyoung’s house…’
Heesung took a deep breath. A sharp pain was felt in his leg, but he endured the groan and anxiously checked the digital clock. Three days had passed since he had collapsed. Feeling something strange, Heesung finally checked his own body.
He was in human form.
Moreover, he was wearing Yoon Chiyoung’s oversized T-shirt. He was also wearing new briefs, and his white tail was visible. An IV drip was inserted in his arm, and a larger cast than before was wrapped around his leg.
Looking down at himself, Heesung stiffened.
Yoon had seen his human form.
Yoon was quick-witted and had a keen sense of smell. He surely realized that this was the puppy he had been taking care of.
“No…”
Heesung bit his lips and anxiously looked around. He didn’t know why Yoon had brought him back home, but no hopeful thoughts came to mind.
Yoon might have wanted to play with him more, or to take revenge, or maybe he planned to make him a subordinate. Heesung looked around and limped toward the dressing room connected to the bedroom.
It would be better to escape somewhere.
Heesung blindly grabbed clothes to take with him and tried to leave. But soon his hands froze.
‘Where am I going? ...There’s nowhere to go, so why run?’
Heesung had nowhere to return to. His brother betrayed him and sold him to Kwon Kihyuk, and his family had long abandoned him. Even the money he had worked hard to save was spent by his brother to cover lost drug payments, so Heesung was completely broke.
“…Fuck…”
It was useless to cry, but Heesung’s vision blurred. He had lived hoping to save money and escape the gang, but everything collapsed. He had returned to the lair of the cannibal wolves, and his body was weak, so he couldn’t do anything.
He wiped his tears away. It would still be better outside than here.
Click.
Whether heaven had abandoned Heesung or not, the sound of the front door opening was heard. The house was large, so the noise was quiet, but Heesung’s sensitive puppy ears perked up.
It was Yoon Chiyoung.
Restless, Heesung frantically searched for a hiding place. Though his body hurt, he dragged his legs and entered the wardrobe. Yoon’s expensive coats were crushed and fell on top of Heesung’s body.
Heesung pulled a thick coat over himself. He bit his teeth to keep from making a sound. He didn’t want Yoon to see his tears or human form. Even trying to turn back into a puppy was difficult because his body was wrapped in bandages.
The scent of Yoon Chiyoung’s body grew stronger on Heesung’s nose. That meant Yoon was getting closer. Curled up and concentrating on his sense of smell, Heesung’s eyes widened.
The smell of blood.
Yoon Chiyoung smelled strongly of blood again.
This time there was no attempt to hide it; there was no scent of soap or perfume. Only the cold outside air mixed with it.
Heesung knew that Yoon had been dealing with someone again. This had become a familiar matter, but Heesung, injured as he was now, could not manage it. Though he tried to stay calm, his fingertips trembled, and his white tail curled tightly between his legs.
“Ha…”
A sigh from nearby was heard from Yoon Chiyoung. The smell of blood grew stronger.
Heesung curled up even smaller inside the wardrobe. He knew a wolf with a keen sense of smell would find him quickly, but his body hid instinctively.
Yoon came closer. He must have stopped in front of the wardrobe, as ❖ Nоvеl𝚒ght ❖ (Exclusive on Nоvеl𝚒ght) his footsteps ceased and the scent came from just outside.
Heesung silently took a deep breath and thought,
‘When the door opens, just hit and run.’
After all, the cannibal wolf’s affection was only for ‘Dog Heesung,’ not the puppy. Heesung had already resolved not to live as a puppy anymore and had to escape from his embrace. Besides, having been kicked out of the dog clan’s gambling den, he had to find a way to live alone.
Alone.
Thinking that, Heesung’s body lost strength like a puppy who had lost all hope.
Slide.
At that moment, the wardrobe’s sliding door gently opened. Heesung hid his tears and was buried under Yoon Chiyoung’s coat. What Yoon thought seeing him like that, he said nothing for a while.
Finally, Yoon called him.
“Puppy.”
Gently, the coat’s hem was lifted, revealing Heesung’s curled black hair and white puppy ears. Slowly, his head lifted from his knees, and Heesung’s frightened round eyes looked out cautiously.
Heesung met eyes directly with Yoon Chiyoung, whose shirt was stained with blood. Yoon bent his knees and looked at Heesung with a usual smile.
Terrified and curled up, Heesung made his last desperate outburst.
“Get away…!”
Heesung stretched out his fist to push Yoon away with all his strength. The punch was surprisingly swift and firm for his build.
But Yoon easily caught the fist. Instead, with that momentum, he pulled Heesung into his embrace. Heesung’s scared black eyes were right before his face.
Yoon acted as usual toward Heesung.
“Let go! You crazy bastard…!”
Heesung’s words were softly muffled. Yoon gladly took the puppy’s sharp canine teeth into his lips. He bled from his lips but smiled with pleasure, mixing tongues with the stiffened Heesung. Heesung’s reaction was more sensitive than expected, like an innocent boy being devoured by a nasty temptation.
Yoon found the puppy’s weak spot. The puppy, who usually responded to skinship with punches, was completely at a loss with just one lewd kiss. He tried to push Yoon’s embrace away with his hands, but the size difference always meant the puppy couldn’t win.
“Heh, huff…”
Heesung’s body slowly retreated further into the wardrobe. Yoon Chiyoung wrapped one arm firmly around Heesung’s back, supporting him. His other hand held Heesung’s clenched fist, still tense, but Yoon patiently mingled their tongues until the puppy relaxed.
Gradually, the tension in Heesung’s body eased.
Each gentle stroke of their tongues made Heesung’s half-folded puppy ears flutter like butterfly wings. Seeing Heesung’s wide, surprised eyes with their lips still pressed together, Yoon carefully covered his eyes with his palm.
Soon, Heesung’s body collapsed softly onto the pile of clothes in the wardrobe. Yoon looked down at the real Heesung beneath and smiled faintly.
“Did you wait for me?”
“……”
Buried in the mound of coats, Heesung was dazed and frozen, barely moving his lips. Yoon stared carefully at Heesung’s expression with his annoyingly handsome face.
“You look just the same as when you were a puppy.”
Despite the embarrassing words, Heesung showed no reaction. His constantly furrowed brows were slack in defeat, and his black, round eyes stood out just like when he was a puppy. Seeing that fragile expression, Yoon’s eyes curved as he burst into delighted laughter. Heesung’s startled, wide eyes truly looked just like a puppy’s.
“You, you…”
“Yeah.”
But unlike when he was a puppy, this time they could speak. Heesung, with his white puppy ears fully flattened back, awkwardly shared his first impression of the kiss.
“Are, are, are you crazy…?”
Yoon finally laughed heartily and buried his head into Heesung’s shoulder, shaking with laughter.
A talking puppy was far cuter than he had expected.
Heesung left the wardrobe cradled in Yoon Chiyoung’s arms. Yoon dressed him in a large T-shirt, changed into clean clothes himself, and even carried Heesung to the dining table while Heesung remained stunned and frozen.
At first, it felt natural to Heesung to be carried by Yoon, but then the shock of how familiar he had become overwhelmed him.
‘…Was he trying to find me just to kill me?’
That question, which had seemed obvious before, filled his mind completely.
Heesung thought that if the puppy he had been raising was actually a beastman who had tricked him, then rather than wanting to kill, he would have felt a strong sense of betrayal.
But Yoon Chiyoung treated Heesung tenderly as always, without any sign of betrayal.
“Aren’t you hungry? It’s about time to eat.”
“……”
At that question, Heesung sat quietly as if a doll, following wherever Yoon moved him. He accidentally sat on Yoon’s thigh, but his head was full of confusion and didn’t even realize something was wrong.
‘Did he get that attached to me…?’
So, does it not matter that I’m a beastman? Heesung desperately tried to figure out the situation.
Finally, he came up with a plausible hypothesis.
‘Could it be that he’s planning to keep me like a puppy?’
It made sense. A small beastman like Heesung was rare, and considering Yoon Chiyoung’s crazy personality, that was the only explanation. Also, raising Heesung continuously as a puppy was the biggest way to mess with him.
While eating egg porridge in Yoon’s arms, Heesung couldn’t hold back and asked,
“Why… do you treat me like usual?”
“What do you mean?”
Yoon tilted his head as if he didn’t understand. His calm, soft voice brushed against Heesung’s ear, making him flinch. Heesung thought Yoon acted so naturally that he still believed he was just a puppy.
‘I’m a fighting dog.’
Heesung sprang up from Yoon’s arms and leaned against a nearby chair, ears perked and alert, and asked aggressively,
“You’re planning to keep me as a puppy, aren’t you?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Then why do you treat me like usual?”
Even when baring his canines in anger, Yoon just looked puzzled.
Frustrated, Heesung spoke harshly as if telling him to get a grip.
“I… punched your face!”
“Oh… that.”
Yoon murmured softly in a calm voice. Heesung stared tensely at him.
Yoon’s gray eyes gazed off somewhere like distant stars. Then, with a faint smile, he muttered to himself,
“That was really thrilling…”
“……”
“My heart was pounding even though I was pissed… Was it from then on?”
Heesung’s face showed mixed emotions — shock, surprise, contempt — but Yoon was used to even those looks. Calm and unbothered, he fed Heesung the last spoonful of egg porridge.
Heesung took the porridge naturally but suddenly flinched. He hated how used to Yoon’s touch he had become.
He was no one’s puppy.
“Stop feeding me!”
He snatched the spoon away from Yoon as it neared his mouth. Overcome by unbearable feelings, Heesung dragged the chair back hard. His tail stiffened and bristled behind him. Holding the spoon like a weapon, he snarled,
“Then you, all this time…”
His flushed face faltered as he stammered. He was angry, but more than that, shame washed over his whole body.
“You knew I was a beastman all along, yet you… raised me like a pet?”
“When? Me?”
Yoon opened his eyes wide with an innocent look, acting as if it made no sense. Sitting with his legs crossed, he smiled elegantly, eyes curling.
“I always treated you like a lover.”
“You crazy bastard!”
Yoon was truly a sly wolf cub. Despite warnings from his brother and Park Geontae, Heesung didn’t know why he’d forgotten. He glared at Yoon, clutching the spoon tightly as if ready to kill.
Yoon had known for a long time that Heesung had been pretending to be a puppy. Yoon seemed not just sly but downright cruel. While glaring at him with murderous eyes, Heesung’s ears trembled with shame as he asked,
“Then why did you pretend not to know I was a beastman at first?”
“Well…”
Yoon turned his head shyly in response. He muttered with a smirk,
“I thought you were cute and wanted to keep you by my side…”
“…You, you…”
Heesung was speechless. Anger welled up, and he felt a sharp pain in his chest.
He pressed his hand to his chest and frowned. He thought it had been better when he was a puppy who couldn’t even talk. Now that they could speak, his anger was starting to boil.
“Ugh…”
But the pain wouldn’t subside easily. Because of his recent injury, even small stimuli were hard for his body to endure. As Heesung clutched his chest and staggered, Yoon got up and held him in his arms.
“Are you okay, babe?”
“Go away! You’re… making it worse…”
It seemed the pain from being kicked in the stomach remained. Heesung leaned on Yoon’s chest, groaning in pain. He was weak to begin with, so maintaining human form with injuries was not easy.
“I… I…”
“I’ll call a doctor. Let’s go to bed.”
“No, just… if you leave me alone… I can rest…”
While groaning, Heesung’s body collapsed gradually. Yoon, holding him, seemed to anticipate what was coming and gently lifted Heesung into his arms.
When Heesung, sweating coldly, opened his eyes again, he noticed a change in his body.
…King.
He transformed back into a puppy. The puppy slumped weakly onto Yoon’s hand with a hollow expression. Though he sensed he’d have to return to his true form because of his injuries, he hadn’t expected to come back so angrily inside.
‘It’s all because of you…!’
“Are you feeling better now?”
‘Do you think so?’
Despite Yoon’s worried question, the puppy bared his teeth and glared fiercely. Yoon looked down at the fluffy puppy as if he could die of cuteness, then suddenly bit the white head gently as if nibbling without pain. The puppy had become so used to it that even while being bitten, he sat resignedly.
Yoon was truly consistent, no matter how he looked. Infuriatingly so.
Eventually, the puppy received medical treatment and IV fluids. After spending two full days like a greenhouse flower, the pain finally eased enough to survive.
After a good sleep, Heesung opened his eyes with a much better body.
“Awake?”
Yoon looked down at the drowsy puppy as if he had been waiting. He gently stroked the puppy’s folded ears and said shyly,
“I have a present prepared.”
‘No way.’
The puppy turned his head sullenly. Anyway, Yoon’s “presents” always meant skinship, like kisses. Having experienced it many times, Heesung didn’t expect much.
Then Yoon, as if expecting the reaction, said,
“Heh, huff…”
Heesung’s body gradually retreated deeper into the wardrobe. Yoon Chiyoung wrapped one arm firmly around Heesung’s back, supporting him. His other hand held onto Heesung’s clenched fist, still tense, but Yoon patiently mingled their tongues until the puppy relaxed.
