Chapter 143: Chapter 141: The Duel Begins
The real reason Ma Xiaotao was in a bad mood—was because Huo Yuhao hadn't helped her purge her evil fire in days.
For the past few days, she constantly felt a restless heat pulsing below her abdomen. She didn't want to admit it, but she was starting to enjoy the strange sensation Huo Yuhao's evil fire cleansing brought her.
Upon hearing Ma Xiaotao's answer, Wang Dong fell silent. 'Home... Shrek, huh? That place never made me feel this way.'
In truth, it was her time spent at the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineering Academy—immersed in soul tool studies and sharing daily life with Huo Yuhao—that brought her a sense of contentment. Sadly, ever since she'd seen Meng Hongchen by his side, those peaceful days had vanished without a trace.
Wang Dong felt like a puppet—her birth, life, even emotions all manipulated by invisible strings.
'No... it's just a feeling. It can't be true.'
She bit her lip hard, refusing to accept such a terrifying notion. Pride and independence demanded she push the thought away.
As she sat beside Ma Xiaotao in silence, uncertain of what to say, a sudden commotion drew their attention. Students were rushing toward a specific direction, excited whispers trailing behind them.
"Hey hey! Senior Ji and Senior Jing are about to duel someone—guess who!"
"Eh? Brother Xiao already left for Shrek Academy. Who else in the school could be their match?"
"Don't forget Senior Meng!"
"And that Huo Yuhao!!! They're teaming up!"
"This pair is my OTP, I swear! Hehe."
"Quick, let's get to the dueling arena!"
Their chatter floated over to Wang Dong and Ma Xiaotao. Out of all the names, one triggered them both like lightning—Huo Yuhao.
"Sounds fun. Wanna go take a look?"
"Yeah."
Without another word, the two girls stood and followed the growing crowd.
Atop the dueling platform stood Huo Yuhao and Meng Hongchen side by side. Opposite them were Ji Juechen and Jing Ziyan, poised and focused.
Huo Yuhao cast a helpless glance at the swelling crowd in the spectator stands. 'We're just sparring. How did word spread so fast?'
As it turned out, one of the students on arena duty that day had seen the four arrive. Whenever Ji Juechen and Jing Ziyan came together, it meant one thing: an exciting fight. For the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineering Academy, lacking powerful soul masters, such battles were a rare visual treat. And now that their opponents were none other than the academy's famed young miss Meng Hongchen and Jing Hongchen's widely admired disciple, Huo Yuhao—the word spread like wildfire.
Students, already idle on class days and more so during holidays, quickly flooded in from every direction.
Meng Hongchen took a quick look at the packed seats. Hearing the enthusiastic cheers from the students for their young lady, she smiled proudly and turned to Huo Yuhao.
"Hehe. With so many people watching, Yuhao, go all out!"
"Yes, ma'am."
Meanwhile, in the audience, Wang Dong and Ma Xiaotao stared blankly at Huo Yuhao.
'It's really him... he's fighting?'
"This guy seriously has nothing better to do," Wang Dong muttered in annoyance. 'Didn't he say he was busy? But here he is, sparring. Even if it's a rest day, after skipping so many of my classes, now he has time for this?'
Ma Xiaotao felt much the same. Hearing the chatter around them, she frowned.
"A Soul Elder and a Soul King... against a Soul Emperor and a Soul King. Is this even winnable?"
Ji Juechen had recently broken through to Soul Emperor rank, while Jing Ziyan remained at the Soul King level.
Wang Dong shook her head.
"Don't know. They teamed up in the last Continental Advanced Soul Master Elite Tournament. Their performance was impressive—they even used a martial soul fusion skill. But... back then, their opponents were just two Soul Ancestors."
She didn't finish the sentence, but both girls knew who she meant—Dai Huabin and Zhu Lu, comrades who'd perished on the battlefield.
Both felt a heavy pressure—not because of those deaths, but because they realized something even more unsettling:
At some point... they had already forgiven Huo Yuhao, the one responsible for their friends' demise.
Meanwhile, the rest of the students were eagerly speculating about the match's outcome. On paper, Soul Emperor Ji Juechen and Soul King Jing Ziyan were the clear favorites. But Meng Hongchen, known as one of the "Millennium Talents," couldn't be underestimated. And as for Huo Yuhao, the direct disciple of Jing Hongchen—his true strength had never been revealed publicly, making him a complete mystery.
"The duel is about to begin. Please remember to show restraint. Let's keep this friendly. Introduce yourselves."
The match had turned so formal that a referee was necessary. A Soul Sage-level instructor from the academy took the role.
"Ji Juechen."
"Jing Ziyan. We'll hold back a little… but just a little. Watch yourselves, junior classmates."
Jing Ziyan bowed slightly. Ji Juechen, however, cradled his signature black longsword in both hands and gave a solemn bow to Huo Yuhao. His eyes, once dull, now burned with a fanatical light. At this moment, there was only one thing in his world—his sword.
"Huo Yuhao."
"Meng Hongchen. Hmph! Don't be so sure who's going to win. You better give it your all!"
Huo Yuhao and Meng Hongchen both nodded. With the introductions done, soul rings flared up around all four of them—brilliant rings of every color lighting up the stage. The sight was absolutely dazzling.
Spectators gawked at the rare combinations. Huo Yuhao's configuration in particular—white, purple, and black—stood out as bizarre yet powerful. In a place like the Sun Moon Empire's academy, where strong soul masters were rare, best combinations were uncommon. His, though strange, was beyond optimal.
"A white first ring? Then purple right after? Who's buying that? I'll laugh at this for years!" someone joked.
And yet—no one would have believed it anyway.
Because Huo Yuhao's first ring wasn't just white... it was platinum.
Seeing all four combatants ready, the referee swallowed his nerves and shouted loudly:
"Match—begin!"
To the crowd's surprise, neither side rushed forward at once. Instead, they stood 150 meters apart, simply staring one another down in absolute silence.
A formless pressure filled the air.
Ji Juechen gripped his sword tightly. All six of his soul rings lit up—each one meant to boost his soul power. In a blink, his power surged to a terrifying level.
