Douluo Dalu 2: Sun-Moon Glory

Chapter 158: Chapter 156: A Coastal Journey with Senior Meng, Begin!

Huo Yuhao nodded in agreement. "Indeed. A sturdy steel warship is more than enough to fend off any sea soul beast below the thousand-year level. But anything above that… they're still a threat. A single small breach from a powerful sea soul beast could be fatal. I've been trying to figure out how to defend against the varied, unpredictable threats they pose."

His brows furrowed tightly. Huo Yuhao felt something was off. In the original timeline, it only took a few thousand years before the Star Luo Empire and the other human nations could sail massive fleets across the ocean to another continent. How did they bolster their defenses against sea soul beasts?

Weapons and detection must've played a role. With life detectors and precision-guided torpedoes installed on battleships, even ten-thousand-year sea soul beasts would likely be forced to retreat. But ultimately, everything still hinged on the ship's defense systems being able to withstand massive waves of sea soul beasts.

The most basic idea would be to outfit the ship with a large soul tool shield—but where could they find such a massive barrier? And how much soul power would it drain? Would they need to use a linked soul tool array to project a shield? If so, a single battleship might require an entire Hand of the Nation-level soul master legion just to function. That would be way too resource-intensive.

As Huo Yuhao was lost deep in thought again, Meng Hongchen poked the back of his head and grumbled with mock annoyance, "Jeez, Yuhao, do you even know anything about sea soul beasts?"

Startled, Huo Yuhao turned and shook his head. "Uh… not really?"

Meng Hongchen stuck out her tongue playfully. "Exactly! You don't know anything, yet you're already trying to design a way for your battleship to defend against sea soul beasts? You're just armchair theorizing!"

"Tch..." Huo Yuhao let out a sharp breath. She had a point. He had no idea what kinds of threats sea soul beasts posed to ships—how could he hope to develop proper defenses?

"So…" Meng Hongchen smiled sweetly, "How about this busybody comes with me to the southern coast of our Sun Moon Empire to do some real fieldwork?"

Mingdu was located deep in the center of the empire—practically the most inland city in the nation. The trip to the coast would take days, possibly over ten. Did he even have the time?

After a moment of thought, Huo Yuhao was surprised to realize… he actually had nothing pressing on his plate. The education reform had already been handed off. Wang Dong was currently in the self-study and prototype phase of her hands-on training, and didn't need much guidance from him. Mingde Hall had no soul tool projects requiring his attention either. He was, for once, completely free.

As for the Holy Spirit Church? That was Tang San's problem, not his.

And so, a free Huo Yuhao naturally chose to embark on a "serious investigative expedition" with his beloved Senior Meng—alright, it was more like a romantic seaside vacation.

Although judging by Meng Hongchen's expression, she seemed more excited about the vacation part than the investigation.

"Sure," Huo Yuhao agreed without hesitation.

Meng Hongchen stared at him in surprise. Did the famous busybody Huo Yuhao just say yes… that fast? She lit up with joy, throwing her arms around his head and planting a kiss on his cheek before bouncing toward the door.

"Hehe! Then I'm off to pack! Let's go right away!"

Watching her cheerful figure disappear out the door, Huo Yuhao helplessly called out, "Senior, no need to rush—we can leave tomorrow. I've got to inform Master about the trip, and we'll need to make a few arrangements before we're gone that long."

Meng Hongchen paused at the doorway, turned back with a cheeky face, and stuck out her tongue. "Got it~!"

He soon heard her bustling in the next room, clearly packing with enthusiasm. Shaking his head with a fond smile, Huo Yuhao was pulled into her energy and began preparing his things too.

---

"We're off!"

Meng Hongchen beamed in her breezy, coastal-style outfit, standing next to Huo Yuhao with excitement practically radiating from her.

He gave her a warm smile and nodded. After a short period of preparation, their journey had officially begun.

Both of them equipped flight-type soul tools, although the ones they wore looked different from the standard models—sleek and advanced.

That's right. Now that sealed milk bottles had been successfully developed, all soul tools could be powered without requiring a soul master to provide energy manually. That opened up massive possibilities for redesign.

Behind each of them unfurled a pair of massive emerald green wings, spanning five meters. With a single beat, they shot into the sky like arrows, vanishing from the ground in the blink of an eye.

These were the Wings of Life, a Level 9 soul tool jointly developed by Jing Hongchen and enhanced by Huo Yuhao.

Mingde Hall possessed the continent's most advanced biomimetic soul tool technology. These wings were inspired by one of the most famous flying soul beasts in the Mingdou Forest: the Blazing Sun Falcon. Once they reached the ten-thousand-year level, these falcons gained radiant gold wings over three meters long and could reach astonishing flying and sprinting speeds—all while maintaining incredible aerial agility due to their unique biological structure.

So then, why were these wings green instead of gold?

The Blazing Sun Falcons possessed both light and fire attributes—just like the royal family of the Sun Moon Empire with their sun martial spirits. Thus, their wings were a blazing gold.

But Huo Yuhao had modified these mimetic wings to carry life attributes instead. That gave the Wings of Life the extraordinary ability to self-repair and heal the wearer—an invaluable tool when retreating while wounded or surrounded.

Of course, these wings placed a high demand on sealed milk bottles. A Level 7 bottle could only power top-speed flight for about thirty minutes. But the speed they offered was incredible—capable of reaching up to three times the speed of sound. Due to the physical limits of their bodies, Huo Yuhao and Meng Hongchen would keep things just below sonic speed, or else their bodies might not hold up.

Still, even at that speed, they were insanely fast. The two green silhouettes rapidly shrank in the sky before vanishing altogether, streaking south toward the Sun Moon Empire's ocean.

At this pace, they'd probably reach the coast in less than half a day.
