Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Crafting Two Sets of Battle Armor
Tian Dou City.
Gu You knew he had to prepare even more — having just soul bones wasn't enough. He needed to craft battle armor in advance, because only that could give him a short-term leap in combat power.
Inside, he kept struggling with the decision: the longer he delayed, the greater the danger his teachers and comrades were in. But if he rushed in unprepared, how could he possibly defeat a fully powered, stronger, and now more knowledgeable Yuezi?
'This is a moral dilemma,' Gu You thought. 'If I rush in and fail, sure, I'll die with a good name — but if I prepare fully and still arrive only to find everyone already dead, what then?'
It was an impossible, no-win scenario. Gu You didn't have a clear answer — but maybe, like always, there would be one eventually. Maybe it would be driven by hot-blooded impulse… or by cold, calculated steadiness.
After absorbing the Darkgolden Terrorclaw Bear's left arm soul bone in the Spirit Ascension Platform, Gu You's physical strength had reached a terrifying level. Maybe not a full punch of 100,000 jin like at peak state, but easily over 10,000 jin now. In a lower plane like Douluo, that was already monstrous! With various amplifications added, breaking 20,000 jin was no problem. His soul power was now at level 35.
If he wanted, Gu You could slam his fist into the ground and trigger a magnitude 3–4 mini earthquake.
He pulled up a familiar number and called on his soul communicator.
A lazy voice answered on the other end. "Weren't you participating in the Tianhai Alliance Tournament? How do you have time to call me?"
"Master, do you have any mineral ores suited for dragon-type battle armor?" Gu You's tone was heavy.
Zhen Hua fell silent. This kid was already thinking about battle armor? But then, recalling that Gu You could already perform spirit forging… and that he now had a hundred-thousand-year soul ring… he had to admit, the boy did indeed have the qualifications to wear single-word battle armor.
"Ore is important, yes — but have you decided what auxiliary effects you want your armor to have?" Zhen Hua asked seriously. Battle armor wasn't just about matching the user's martial soul — it was about complementing their weaknesses. If the wearer burned through soul power too fast, for example, then the armor should be engraved with arrays that stored, extended, or replenished soul power.
Engraving these arrays was no easy feat. Currently, there were only four rank-9 array engravers in the entire Douluo Federation. Even throughout history, this profession had always been incredibly rare.
"Make everything boost offense! I don't need anything else," Gu You replied without hesitation.
"You brat… fine. I'll call in a rank-8 mecha array engraver for you, but the forging is up to you. Once the Tianhai Tournament is over, come here to forge the ores. The materials you need might be tricky — I'll try to source ores that match your dragon-type martial soul as closely as possible. And hey, tone it down a little next time at the tournament — you're drawing way too much attention." Zhen Hua sighed.
"Master, I'm already in Tian Dou. I really need that armor urgently. I've withdrawn from the Tianhai Tournament." Gu You let out a breath.
"What?! You withdrew?! What happened?" On the other end, Zhen Hua's voice spiked in surprise.
"It's complicated… and honestly, it's a good thing. If I explain it, it'll just make things worse. If you can't source the ideal ores, don't worry about it — just get something that'll do the job. Thank you, Master! I'm heading to the Forgers' Association now." Gu You hung up.
"…This kid…" Zhen Hua was left blinking in confusion. Still, he issued swift orders to have two rare ores brought out from his private vault: Dragonwhisker Crystal and Longyuan Meteorite Ore.
Dragonwhisker Crystal was highly flexible, an excellent match for dragon-type martial souls. Longyuan Meteorite Ore was a space mineral, nearly unheard of — especially attractive to destruction- and devour-type dragon martial souls.
Gu You arrived at the association's upper floors, met Zhen Hua, and when he saw the two ores laid out before him, he couldn't hide his excitement. The quantity was enough — enough to craft two full sets of armor!
The first set would use Dragonwhisker Crystal, tailored for his human form.
The second set would use Longyuan Meteorite Ore, tailored for his fully dragonified form.
It might seem excessive — why not just make one set, like Longyuan did? But from Gu You's perspective, if the first set broke in battle, he could switch to the second one as backup. He still remembered how Battle Frenzy had been forced into retreat after his two-word armor shattered — if only he'd had a spare set!
Gu You knocked his knuckles on his own forehead, praising his clever brain. If other armor-makers heard what he was planning, they'd probably want to kill him on the spot. Did he even understand how many resources it took to craft a single set of battle armor? And he wanted to make two at once?! It defied all reason!
"What exactly happened?" Zhen Hua asked quietly, reclining in his chair. "Can you give me the short version?"
"I got into a fight. The other guy had battle armor, so I figured I should have some too." Gu You smiled faintly.
"Oh!" Zhen Hua nodded. "Fair enough. But this is going to take time. You're looking at at least two months of closed-door work."
Gu You frowned slightly. When he first had the idea to make battle armor, he hadn't fully considered the time it would take. Now that he thought about it, it made sense — after forging all the spirit-forged metals, you had to shape them to match your own height, waist, arm widths, and so on, then pass them through a series of molds to produce a rough armor model, then have the array engravers inscribe the necessary formations. Of course that wasn't going to happen overnight. But two months…? That felt excessive. Did they really doubt him that much?
"I know. Just get me the array engraver — I'll handle the rest." Gu You exhaled deeply and stepped into the forging room.
'At this pace, it's going to take a while,' he thought, glancing down at his own hands. 'In the end… am I a good guy, or a bad one…?'
