Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Winning Streak (Part 2)
Chapter 29: Winning Streak (Part 2)
Just like yesterday, after school in the afternoon, the promotion match was held on the playground of the intermediate department.
This was the second day of the tournament, but like the first day, there were still few spectators.
Yesterday, the victory of Grade 1 Class 5 over Grade 1 Class 4 hadn't caused much of a stir in the college. After all, it was just a match between the lowest classes of the lowest grade.
However, not everyone took it lightly. Grade 1 Class 3, which was facing Class 5 this afternoon, treated the match very seriously.
Ye Yingrong, the head teacher of Grade 1 Class 3, wasn't very old—just a few years younger than Wu Changkong. She was a new teacher.
Ye Yingrong arrived early, and the students of Class 3 were lined up in perfect order. At the front stood three handsome boys—triplets. Strangely, they looked identical. If you weren't familiar with them, you wouldn't be able to tell who was who.
Wu Changkong also arrived with Grade 1 Class 5. Nan Fusheng, Tang Wulin, Xie Xie, and Gu Yue followed him closely.
The other students in the class looked excited. After yesterday's dominant win, they had great confidence in these four.
Ye Yingrong approached with a smile.
"Hello, Teacher Wu," she said warmly, nodding politely.
Ye Yingrong was a rare beauty—over 1.7 meters tall, with well-proportioned features. Her big, expressive eyes sparkled with energy. Her unusual light green hair was neatly tied into a ponytail. She had fair skin, an oval face, and a cherry mouth. Based on appearance alone, one could easily mistake her for a student in the Advanced Division.
At just 23, she was already teaching at Donghai College, and she was a four-ring Spirit Master. For her age, that was quite remarkable.
"Hello," Wu Changkong replied with a nod.
"I'm Ye Yingrong, the teacher of Class 3," she introduced herself pointedly. She was confident that this cold and aloof "male god" had no idea who she was. Rumor had it he lived entirely in his own world and didn't even know the names of most women at the academy.
"Mm." Wu Changkong gave a noncommittal sound and shifted his gaze to the competition platform.
Xie Xie, watching from the side, was amazed. What he envied most about Teacher Wu was that his cool and aloof air wasn't an act—he was born like this. Compared to him, Xie Xie felt completely lacking in presence!
Ye Yingrong didn't mind Wu Changkong's attitude and called her students over. The students from Class 3 quickly lined up behind her.
She told them, "Friendship first, competition second. Gu Tianri, Gu Tianyue, Gu Tianming, Ito Makoto—pay close attention later. Understand?"
"Yes, Teacher Ye!" The triplets and a plain-looking boy replied in unison.
Wu Changkong turned to glance at them. His gaze lingered briefly when he saw that the three looked exactly alike. Clearly, he was more interested in the triplets than in Ye Yingrong.
At that moment, the director of teaching, Long Hengxu, arrived on the stage.
"For the second match of the promotion tournament—Grade 1 Class 5. Will you be sending four participants again?"
Wu Changkong nodded. Nan Fusheng, Tang Wulin, Xie Xie, and Gu Yue stepped onto the platform.
Ye Yingrong smiled slightly. "You go too."
The Gu triplets and Ito Makoto also entered the ring.
The Gu brothers had a unique presence. Though they looked thin, their eyes were sharp. The synchronized movements of triplets gave them an eerie unity. By contrast, Ito Makoto, walking alongside them, looked almost invisible.
Wu Changkong didn't give any instructions to his students. After all, the promotion match was a form of training. If they always relied on guidance, they would never learn to grow independently.
Nan Fusheng and the others adopted the same formation as yesterday.
The Gu brothers stood side-by-side—Gu Tianri in the center, Gu Tianyue on the left, Gu Tianming on the right. Ito Makoto stood behind them, hidden from view.
"Are you ready?" Long Hengxu asked as usual. After receiving affirmation from both sides, he raised his hand and declared the second match officially underway.
The Gu brothers released their martial spirits simultaneously. Seeing their spirits, a flicker of surprise flashed across the eyes of Nan Fusheng and the others.
It wasn't surprising that the triplets had identical spirits, but when their wings spread at the same time, the visual impact was still impressive.
Three pairs of wings unfurled simultaneously, and a white spirit ring appeared beneath each of their feet. The Gu brothers lifted off the ground and soared into the air.
But as they rose, their backs became exposed—and Ito Makoto vanished.
Yes—Ito Makoto had disappeared. He hadn't flown up with them. He simply vanished.
The martial spirit of the Gu triplets was called Skyhawk—a bird spirit known for extreme speed.
The Skyhawk wasn't particularly strong, but it excelled in agility. Among soul beasts, the Skyhawk could reach altitudes of over 3,000 meters and maintain high speed for extended periods. Accordingly, the Gu brothers had all chosen the path of agile-attack type Spirit Masters.
For their first soul, they selected the Light Wind Falcon—a small, palm-sized bird spirit with incredible speed but no offensive power.
While this might seem like a joke, if they could evolve it into something stronger, their combat ability could grow significantly.
"It can fly? What do we do?" Xie Xie asked, looking up.
Tang Wulin grinned. "Shoot them down. Fusheng, it's up to you. Gu Yue, bless him with wind element," he said, as blue light flashed from his hand and Blue Silver Grass wrapped around Xie Xie's waist.
Xie Xie shrieked, "I'm afraid of heights! What should I do?"
Tang Wulin replied grumpily, "And I'm afraid of pain. How many times did you stab me yesterday?" Before Xie Xie could answer, he yanked him forward and hugged him tightly from behind.
A green glow flashed as Gu Yue's wind element enveloped Xie Xie, lightening his body significantly. The next instant, Tang Wulin spun and hurled him into the air.
From the sidelines, Ye Yingrong watched in shock as Tang Wulin threw Xie Xie skyward like a discus. How could he throw someone so high? She was stunned.
But soon, she composed herself.
The Gu brothers had flying martial spirits and were trained for aerial combat. She had focused heavily on developing their synergy. Even if one enemy could fly, wasn't this the perfect opportunity to use their triple advantage?
In midair, Gu Tianri calmly gestured. Instead of engaging directly, he flapped his wings and abruptly stopped midair.
Flying was their biggest advantage. They had no reason to fight head-on.
Their plan: wait for Xie Xie to tire mid-air, then strike decisively.
But just as Gu Tianri prepared to retreat, a strange force invaded his mind, causing Gu Tianming's consciousness to momentarily blank. Xie Xie slapped his head with the Light Dragon Dagger, then used his foot to push off Gu Tianri's shoulder and soared like a roc toward Gu Tianyue.
"Gu Tianri is out!" Long Hengxu called out from below. Had this been a real battle, Xie Xie's dagger would have slit his throat.
"What?!" Gu Tianyue and Gu Tianming were shocked. But before they could react, they both experienced dizziness. In the next second, they were knocked unconscious, each struck by a slap from the dagger.
All three had been taken out.
Nan Fusheng, Tang Wulin, and Gu Yue remained alert. They knew there was still one opponent left.
Gu Yue reached out and summoned wind element, gently cushioning Xie Xie's fall from the sky.
Then, from the shadows at the edge of the arena, a figure slowly emerged. It was Ito Makoto.
The three readied themselves to strike.
But Ito Makoto raised both hands. "Surrender. I surrender."
His martial spirit was Shadow Wolf, and his first soul skill was Hidden Shadow. While everyone was distracted by the Gu brothers' aerial display, he had activated it and slipped into the shadows.
But before he ever found a good opening to strike, the Gu brothers were already defeated.
He had no intention of becoming cannon fodder. So, he surrendered.
"Grade 1 Class 5, wins!" Long Hengxu's voice held unmistakable shock.
