Chapter 29: Seat No. 10 — Making Friends?
As Class 1-A's homeroom teacher, Aizawa, entered the class, the students returned to their seats.
Letting out a breath, Luke pushed the matter of the blue spirit particles to the back of his mind for now. Regardless of the complexity of the mystery at hand, he was glad that he had clues to work with at least.
So, for now, he decided to focus on the present.
The very first thing that stood out to him was the absence of former Class 1-A student Koji Koda.
Koji Koda had the quirk that let him talk to animals, making them follow his command. It was quite a versatile quirk, but Koda himself had been a timid person, with an immense fear of bugs.
Now, as Luke had confirmed, Koda was in Class 1-B, while one of the original students from 1-B was in the General Education Department.
It's like no matter whose fate changes in this world, for better or worse, the net quantity remains constant… Luke thought about his self-theorized Law of Conservation of Fate, taking his seat.
With Koda gone, who used to sit at Seat No. 9, Rikido Sato was now seated in his place.
Meanwhile, Luke had taken Rikido's place at Seat No. 10, the last bench in the second column against the wall, his Japanese name being Renji Saionji.
To Luke's right sat Uraraka, who sheepishly smiled at him.
To Luke's left was Todoroki, his eyes to the front.
And, to Todoroki's left was Momo.
"Where did you get that composition?" Momo asked as Aizawa fumbled with his sleeping bag. "I couldn't find a crystal with that composition anywhere."
Luke smiled. "Family secret…" he said, kicking the mystery on Saionji Group's lap.
He dearly wanted Momo's help to get the Inorganic Ingredients of the remaining two Potions. However, if there was one person he knew the best in the world, then it was Momo.
The moment he approached her, requesting another creation, she would catch on to it instantly.
The girl had a knack for such things, Luke knew. She would realize Luke taking out foreign, unknown compositions back to back, and then might decide not to create anything for him unless she solved the mystery herself first.
No. A better way was to make her believe that it was her idea, to begin with.
So, Luke needed to be patient if he wanted Momo's help in the long run.
"But…" Luke said as Momo thought of the Saionji name, "… I've got more compositions from where the crystal had come from… Let me know if you need some practice…"
Shoto Todoroki suddenly looked at Luke. "We can exchange seats if you want…"
Luke and Momo's heads snapped forward simultaneously.
…
Aizawa took the roll call and then eyed them all.
The students were eagerly waiting to attend the Orientation Ceremony of UA. Students from other courses and departments must have already reached the venue.
Shocking everyone, Aizawa pointed at the lockers, like drawers within the walls, and said, "Go, put on your PE uniform. We are going out in the field for a quick Quirk Assessment Test."
What?!
"But, sir?" Uraraka said, raising her hand. "Orientation… We are gonna miss it…"
"If you are serious about becoming a Hero," Aizawa looked at them hard, "then you don't have time to waste on pointless ceremonies.
"At UA, we don't follow a traditional curriculum. That means I get to run my class as I see fit. Come on. We don't have all day."
The students looked at each other's faces, but they were already getting up. What choice did they have anyway?
Even Luke, who had just sat down, was as shocked as everyone else.
There was something like this, too?! Luke thought, sharing a look with Nyx, who had also made herself comfortable on his bench. Why didn't Momo ever mention it to me?
Luke felt odd that Momo would tell him about Rescue Points, but not that she had never attended the Orientation Ceremony.
But then he remembered something — Momo's expression as she had told him about Rescue Points.
He had missed it in his previous life. Now that he thought about it, she seemed to say that if she had participated in the Entrance Exams, then she would have easily figured out this simple detail.
Also, Momo had never been a party or event girl…
Luke smiled as he thought about the confident smug on Momo's face. He looked to his left, lost in thought, and found Todoroki staring right back at him.
Todoroki's mouth twitched. "Seriously. We can exchange seats."
Luke hurriedly left his bench to put on his PE uniform.
…
UA's Sports Field,
Luke stretched his shoulders as the students gathered.
Suddenly, Mezo Shoji and Rikido Sato walked up to him. With Koji gone, they were the only two guys bigger and taller than Luke.
At 187 cm, Mezo had a lean, but super-muscular build. He had the Dupli-Arms Quirk that granted him four arm-like tentacles attached to his shoulder. Using these tentacles, he could replicate other parts of his body.
At 185 cm, Rikido was even more bulkier than Mezo. He had the Quirk — Sugar Rush, which let him increase his strength fivefold for three minutes.
"… Renji?"
"Luke is fine."
Mezo nodded. "You aren't from Japan, right?"
Luke nodded back. "America, but I have only Japanese Citizenship."
"Man, I wish I had your looks," Rikido joked. "With my face, I could use blond hair and blue eyes…"
From afar, Midoriya jogged to join the three boys as well.
Mezo looked Luke up and down. "You workout?"
Now that was something Luke could talk about. For a moment, he had felt like he couldn't open his mouth at all. It was still hard, he realized, talking normally…
Just imagine… Luke told himself. Imagine they are stepbrothers…
That brought out a smile on Luke's face. "Every morning. Full body…"
Mezo smiled behind the mask, Rikido and Midoriya's eyes lighting up as well.
Luke caught up on the children's interests. "Would you guys like to discuss workout routines?"
"Sure…" Mezo nodded.
"What I wanted to say…" Rikido gave a thumbs up.
Midoriya balled his fingers into fists. "Count me in…"
"Come over here!" Aizawa shouted at the four boys, the rest of the students already huddling up around him.
As the boys ran toward the homeroom teacher, Nyx landed on Luke's shoulder.
"Nyx…" Luke admitted, "… I am having a — funny feeling…"
"Yeah?" Nyx slammed her wing on the back of Luke's head. "That funny feeling is called making friends, you dumbass!"
Making friends… Luke repeated the words, tasting them at the tip of his tongue. A full-grown man… making friends with children…
…
[
… Accept your present, Blessed, to better control your state.
If you think about it, it isn't unlike Acting to digest Potion, right?
At the end of the day, you just need to keep in mind that you are simply Acting.
]
…
Yes, Luke nodded to himself, joining the students. Miss Justice's right. I am just Acting as a student. So —
— It wouldn't be so bad if I made a few friends.
