Chapter 119: Chapter 119: Shark
With Yamiru's iron-clad feet and the possibility of seemingly escaping from the clutches of Shen's claws, which gave him a boost of motivation, he quickly made a complete circle around the island's perimeter. It took him less than an hour in total.
In the end, though, he was exhausted.
Around Shen and his companions, even when Yamiru did nothing, simply scheming with these two old men and constantly keeping an eye on one thing or another drained his energy. His eating habits were poor, his sleep was restless, and although he knew it wasn't right, there was still a subconscious accumulation of anxiety. After completing the island loop, Yamiru realized that his health was not in a good state. Normally, he shouldn't have been so tired.
"Living under all this negative energy really takes a toll... Reminding myself not to be affected by the way he and Tao Pai Pai act... I must really have a problem with my head. Wouldn't it be better to just relax?"
Yamiru took off his shirt, exhaled deeply, sat on a rock to rest, and gazed at the white waves crashing below as he fell into contemplation.
"Just like Tien Shinhan and Vegeta. They're not bad at their core, but whether it's their behavior or mindset, they always move in a direction that benefits their own survival. In an environment like the planet Vegeta or under the Frieza Force, a naive person would probably go crazy one day. And if I kept staying around Shen and Tao Pai Pai, wouldn't i eventually become like the Tien Shinhan who first appeared in the Original work? Perhaps that was Shen's plan all along."
After all, a long-lived old monster like him probably didn't lack time in his perception; he had plenty of patience to slowly wear Yamiru down.
The more you see, the more numb you become. And then maybe the way you think would subtly change, such as, "Actually, killing a stranger isn't such a big deal," or "This guy isn't a good person anyway, kind of disgusting, so I might as well kill him," or "Why not? He was in my way, and I'm doing it for my own good, isn't that what everyone does?" things like that.
Yamiru suddenly chuckled to himself, self-deprecating.
"If I didn't showed the potential i had, or if I'm too stubborn, I might have end up being killed before I get the chance to see that day."
Having rested enough, he stood up.
"Forget it. It's over now. Why bother thinking about it?"
Yamiru put his shirt back on and glanced toward the half-sunken shipwreck, where there was no sign of anyone. They must have gone deep into the island to search for traces of human activity.
"I can only rely on myself." Yamiru randomly picked a direction and walked deeper into the island.
---
As he walked, Yamiru noted the trees that could be used for making a raft and kept an eye on the ground for signs of animal activity.
Before he could start working on the raft, the first thing he needed to do was fill his stomach.
Of course, Yamiru kept his Golden Gaze ability active, periodically scanning the area to check if Shen, Tao Pai Pai, or anyone with Tien Shinhan's energy signature was nearby.
At this point, Yamiru felt that his Golden Gaze ability was rather useless. Compared to the Ki sense method, which could detect everything with no blind spots, relying on vision and being limited by distance was too restrictive. But at least it was an ability he could use without effort, so he wasn't too critical of it.
"Now that I think about it, though, Ki sense can miss things too. Even a genius like Vegeta was tricked. But with Golden Veil, I should never get fooled, right? Even if they're hiding their energy, I should still be able to see them? Hmm…"
Yamiru had this sudden thought.
"Maybe, if possible, I should ask Shenron to give me an eagle-eye buff for my vision. That should be doable, right?"
As he walked and pondered, Yamiru noticed some familiar wild fruits on a tree. He easily climbed up, picked a few, and casually wiped them before devouring them.
After satisfying his hunger, Yamiru stood on the branch and looked out.
It wasn't long before he noticed two or three people fleeing in panic not far away.
"Help!"
"Cannibals!"
"Ah! Monsters!"
The heart-wrenching screams quickly faded. Yamiru, still on the branch and not too close, wasn't seen. But he recognized the fleeing people—they were the survivors who had gathered near the half-sunken shipwreck earlier. This situation... seemed like they had encountered the locals after venturing deeper into the island?
"Cannibals? Primitive humans?" Yamiru took a step forward and jumped down from the tree. "But I guess it has nothing to do with me."
Since he was already struggling to take care of himself, Yamiru didn't have the energy to worry about the strangers. What mattered to him now was making a raft as soon as possible, throwing himself into the ocean, and drifting to a place where Shen and Tao Pai Pai couldn't find him. He just needed to survive.
Crack, thud...
The sound of Yamiru stepping on and breaking branches echoed through the forest, followed by the sound of heavy objects dragging along the ground. His golden eyes scanned the surroundings, filled with some confusion. After working for quite a while, he still hadn't encountered any cannibals or monsters that the fleeing people had screamed about.
"Hmm... let me think. Was that just a story they made up?"
On the beach, not far from the wreckage of the passenger ship, Yamiru sat on the ground surrounded by thick branches and what could only be described as tangled grass, vines, or something else. He was making ropes by hand, using the "grass" to weave them in the way his special forces instructor, Derat, had taught him, ensuring that they would be strong and durable in the sea. After all, if the raft broke apart while drifting, Yamiru didn't have confidence in his ability to swim to land.
Back then, even the not-so-distant strait between the Southern Continent and Papaya Island had been crossed only with the help of a mysterious old man's urging and the life-extending power of a Senzu Bean.
Realistically speaking, crossing the sea by drifting?
That would probably require the strength of Son Goku after the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament... wait, considering Goku's Saiyan physiology—under the same fighting power level, Earthlings definitely wouldn't be able to withstand a chopping axe blow like Goku did with his head. Yamiru could guarantee that. In fact, even if Yamiru reached the same level of combat power, he probably still wouldn't be able to achieve the incredible feat of Goku walking and swimming around the Earth.
"Ah, I made a mistake."
Yamiru absentmindedly knotted his finger, so he had to undo it and redo it.
"Now that I think about it, I've crossed a strait by swimming before..." he thought to himself, "Could I still do that now?"
"Whoosh~~!"
At that moment, Yamiru heard an unusual sound from the waves. He looked up and saw, not far off the shore, the dorsal fin of what was clearly a shark. The shark was swimming in circles in the shallow water. Yamiru continued to weave the rope, calmly observing the creature, and couldn't help but salivate as he murmured, "I wonder if shark meat is edible?"
Perhaps it was just his imagination, but the shark's fin seemed to momentarily pause in its slicing through the waves.
"Help!!"
A piercing scream from the direction of the forest snapped Yamiru's attention back.
By the time he turned around, all he could see was the tattered, blood-soaked "sheep-head woman," who had been impaled by a wooden spear thrown from the forest. The sharp point of the spear had pierced through her chest and abdomen, pinning her to the shore, her body slanted. Yamiru recognized her as one of the survivors from earlier.
In the depths of the woods, a white shadow flickered and vanished in the distance.
"..." Yamiru lowered his golden eyes, staring at the half-finished rope in his hands.
