Chapter 29: CHAPTER 29
c29: The Game Begins! The First Session: Written Test
On a barren, rust-colored planet devoid of life, massive craters and ravines scarred the surface like open wounds. The terrain stretched outward in every direction dusty, dry, and pockmarked by past celestial collisions.
At the center of a particularly deep crater stood a dome-shaped barrier glowing with a soft translucent shimmer. Inside the shield was a colossal arena. Its flat stone platform spanned over five hundred square meters, cleanly carved and reinforced to withstand battle on a godly scale.
On either side of the stage stood two towering vertical signs each one a polished reflective mirror. Displayed on them were stylized images of Universe 7's God of Destruction, Beerus, and Universe 6's God of Destruction, Champa (Xiangpa in Chinese versions), locked in intense expressions as if staring each other down.
At this moment, Champa, his angel attendant Vados (Bados), and the six chosen fighters of Universe 6 had already arrived and gathered within the protective dome. Among the six stood the official referee chosen to oversee the matches.
"They're still not here?" Champa asked with a frown, his voice edged with irritation and his arms crossed.
Vados closed her eyes slightly and responded in her usual calm tone, "They've just arrived."
"Oh?" Champa turned with a start, his gaze shifting toward the edge of the barrier.
Whoosh!
In a flash of divine energy, Beerus, Whis, and the entire Universe 7 team materialized onto the scene. Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Buu, and Monaka stood behind Beerus, along with the Earthlings: Bulma, Krillin, Tien, Master Roshi, and others who had come to watch.
Their eyes weren't immediately drawn to the arena but rather to the sky above them.
A golden celestial light surrounded the entire atmosphere of the planet. Suspended in orbit were enormous glowing orbs—shimmering like suns but clearly artificial. There were six of them in total, spaced evenly around the planet.
Each orb had a specific number of red stars inside ranging from one to six.
They were not stars.
They were Super Dragon Balls each the size of a planet.
"This... is this the Super Dragon Ball? It's huge!" Bulma gasped, eyes wide in amazement. She'd seen many strange things across her adventures, but nothing on this cosmic scale.
The rest of the group also nodded, stunned into silence. They'd all seen Earth's Dragon Balls but these were on a whole other level.
"This is the true form of Dragon Balls," Beerus explained, his tone unusually composed. "These are the Super Dragon Balls planet-sized spheres scattered across Universe 6 and Universe 7. The ones on Earth were created by Namekians using shards of these."
"No wonder they're so powerful…" Goku muttered, gazing upward. "Is this where the tournament is happening? So cool!"
"I'm a little confused…" Krillin said, scratching his head. "How are we breathing? Shouldn't we be suffocating in space?"
Whis chuckled and responded smoothly, "This area has been enveloped in divine energy by Vados. You're perfectly safe."
Beerus folded his arms and looked over at Champa. "I'll admit it, you chose a pretty interesting spot for a tournament. I'm actually impressed."
As he glanced again at the Super Dragon Balls floating nearby, Beerus narrowed his eyes and said dryly, "You even managed to gather six of them. That's surprising, Champa."
"Hmph!" Champa smirked and flicked his hand dismissively. "I've been collecting them for ages. This match is everything to me."
Beerus looked suspicious. "Tell me something... you didn't happen to take the Super Dragon Ball from our universe, did you?"
"Eh? Uh…" Champa hesitated and scratched his cheek awkwardly, clearly caught off guard.
Beerus snorted. "I thought so. Anyway, it still technically belongs to Universe 7. Enough talking are your fighters ready?"
Champa huffed and then stepped aside proudly. "Of course they are."
As he moved, the full lineup of Universe 6's warriors came into view.
There was a lean, serious-looking young man in a blue gi—Cabba, a Saiyan from Planet Sadala. Next to him stood Botamo, a rotund golden bear-like creature. Then came Magetta, a massive metallic being who emitted steam like a furnace. Fourth was Frost, a polite but menacing alien who bore a striking resemblance to Frieza. Fifth was Hit, a tall, stoic purple assassin with cold eyes and a cloak. And lastly, the referee stood ready between both teams.
"That guy… he looks just like Frieza!!" Krillin gasped, taking an unconscious step back.
The others were also alarmed, Vegeta narrowed his eyes, while Piccolo tensed subtly.
Even Buu stopped eating candy for a moment and looked up.
Goku and Vegeta also looked serious. It was clear that they still didn't fully grasp the intricacies of this parallel universe and its inhabitants.
Luya cast a calm glance over the Universe 6 fighters, but his eyes quickly locked onto Hit, the tall, silent assassin. A subtle glint flashed in Luya's gaze.
This guy... there's no doubt. He's the strongest one here.
"Hmph! Frieza? Don't be ridiculous! That's Frost he's the pride of Universe 6! A noble warrior who's received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Justice and Peace across multiple systems!" Champa said coolly, chest puffed with pride.
"W-What?! A peace prize?!"
The moment those words left his mouth, stunned silence overtook the Universe 7 team.
What the hell? Is this a joke? Everyone's expression was the same—utter disbelief. Frieza, the so-called Emperor of Evil in their universe, was the polar opposite of justice.
In Universe 7, Frieza was known as a tyrant who destroyed Planet Vegeta, enslaved races, and wiped out planets on a whim.
"Greetings," said the familiar-looking figure as he approached with a warm smile. "I'm Frost, Captain of Universe 6's Space Peacekeeping Force."
Krillin and the others exchanged wary glances. His demeanor was polite, even kind but the resemblance to Frieza triggered all their instincts. They didn't know how to respond to such friendliness coming from a face they associated with genocide.
"Hello! I'm Son Goku," Goku said with a big smile, stepping forward without hesitation. "In our universe, there's someone who looks exactly like you... but he's not kind at all. He definitely didn't win any peace awards."
Frost chuckled politely. "I see. Thank you for the warning."
"Alright, enough introductions! Let's get started already!" Beerus said, clearly growing irritated.
Champa stepped forward quickly and replied, "Very well! If you insist! This tournament has two segments—first, a written exam to test intelligence and culture. After that, we begin the martial arts battles!"
Beerus raised an eyebrow. "A written test? Are you kidding me?"
Champa crossed his arms proudly. "Of course not! This isn't just a brawl this is a full contest between the best of our two universes. Brains and brawn, Beerus!"
Beerus let out a loud sigh. "Ugh, fine. Let's just get this over with."
Champa gestured to the side. "He will serve as the tournament referee!"
From behind him, a tiny alien shaped like a sprouting bean walked out and bowed politely.
Beerus gave the creature a quick glance and nodded. "Whatever. Let's begin."
Moments later, the competitors from both universes sat at rows of tables. In front of each of them was a single white sheet of paper.
"This written exam contains ten multiple-choice questions," Vados announced cheerfully. "Anyone who gets fewer than five correct is disqualified and may not proceed to the martial arts portion."
The air grew tense. Everyone looked down at their papers. As they picked them up, however, their expressions quickly twisted into confusion and disbelief.
What the Every question was about food trivia, alien cuisine, or culinary science across the universes.
Who came up with these ridiculous questions? Are they serious?
ACHOO!!
Suddenly, both Beerus and Champa sneezed at the same time.
They glared at each other across the field.
"Did you just insult me?" they both said in perfect unison.
"…."
Everyone: "…"
Whis and Vados: "…"
"Hmph! Child's play. As if a food quiz would be hard for me!" Vegeta scoffed. Clearly annoyed, he grabbed his pen and began filling in answers without hesitation. After all, he was married to Bulma Earth's richest woman and had long since grown accustomed to luxury and fine dining.
Beep!!!
A loud whistle pierced the air.
Before anyone could react, Vados had floated over to Vegeta and blew a referee whistle right beside him, startling the Saiyan Prince so much he nearly dropped his pen.
Everyone turned to look.
"HEY! What the hell was that for?!" Vegeta shouted, rising from his chair with fire in his eyes.
Vados smiled politely. "Well... you began writing before the exam officially started. According to the rules, that counts as cheating."
Vegeta: "…"
His face twitched, lips parted as if to protest—but no words came out.

PS: I slightly adjusted and clarified this plotline to better align with the Dragon Ball Super manga (Universe 6 arc). The written test, Frost's personality, and Goku's open friendliness are all canon-based. The small creative liberties here are consistent with existing lore. Minor differences, but no major deviation!
