Chapter 142: Chapter 4: Danzō and the Uchiha
As expected, Danzō and the Uchiha were at it again.
Getsushoku watched the drama unfold from the sidelines, quite entertained—didn't matter whether Danzō or the Uchiha were the ones getting screwed over, as long as someone was.
Still, Sarutobi Hiruzen wasn't going to just sit back and let things spiral out of control. With a firm hand, he forcefully suppressed the entire incident.
"As expected of the Third Hokage... he's not about to let the village fall into chaos," Getsushoku remarked with a meaningful sigh.
The moment the Third stepped in, he immediately gained the gratitude of Uchiha Shisui. Uchiha Fugaku, on the other hand, was cursing him out behind his back. If he really had the Uchiha's best interest at heart, he should've investigated everything properly and made the truth public. Instead, he used authority to shut everyone up and buried it all in ambiguity!
Without a thorough investigation, the truth would never be cleared up. Things might seem calm on the surface, but behind the scenes, the rumors were endless.
Looking at Sarutobi Hiruzen's kind old face, Fugaku honestly couldn't tell whether the man was being deliberate or just negligent.
Sarutobi thought it was Danzō stirring the pot. Meanwhile, Danzō was busy trying to figure out who had wiped out the Root ninja he'd sent to stir trouble.
Getsushoku enjoyed the show at first, but his mood soon turned complicated.
This was the world of a manga—but he wasn't the protagonist. Given his actions so far, chances were high he'd end up as one of those villains the main character beats into the ground.
If he worked hard, maybe he could become a major recurring antagonist. But if he gave up and went with the flow, he'd just be another random goon who gets casually taken out by the protagonist's team.
He might even die before the story officially started!
Maybe the reason his name never came up in the anime... was because he died too early!
That thought weighed heavily on him, but life still went on. He had to go to work.
When he arrived at the entrance of the Hokage's office, he just happened to run into Kakashi. The moment he saw those dead-fish eyes of his, Getsushoku's mood instantly soured.
It wasn't just Kakashi's annoying personality. The guy was a complete overachiever.
They were all coworkers—why was Kakashi trying so hard and making everyone else look lazy in comparison? They all got paid the same anyway. What was the point of putting in that much effort?
Getsushoku arrived at the Anbu headquarters, gave a half-hearted greeting to his squad captain, and began his day's work.
Not every shinobi in Konoha was devoted to their job or burned the "Will of Fire" into their soul. Most were just regular people going with the flow—following orders from above, working to make ends meet, and occasionally swapping tips on how to slack off.
Anbu had plenty of ninja from civilian backgrounds. They had clawed their way up from the bottom, and through them, you could glimpse the less glamorous side of the village. To put it bluntly, if one of these civilian-born ninja died unjustly, no one would avenge them. Most wouldn't even remember their names.
Take that sickly guy, Gekkō Hayate, for example. He was killed by Sunagakure's Baki and Yakushi Kabuto. But after the Fourth Shinobi War, Kabuto came back to Konoha and became an orphanage director. Konoha got all friendly with Sunagakure again. Baki remained a high-ranking figure in Sunagakure, and his student, Temari, even married Shikamaru—making her basically part of Konoha's elite.
And then there's Orochimaru. He experimented on his fellow villagers, and during the Konoha Crush, countless unnamed shinobi died because of him. Yet after the war, he was still comfortably active in Konoha.
At least Gekkō Hayate had a name, and someone remembered him. Most others were just numbers on a casualty report—cold scratches carved into the Memorial Stone.
You really had to wonder how Yūhi Kurenai managed to stomach watching all those enemies of her fallen comrade thrive and strut around the village every day.
But she had no choice. In this world where power determined everything, rebellion was nearly impossible. Education was monopolized. Bloodlines capped your potential. For a civilian to rise above it all? A fantasy.
Could anyone truly replicate Namikaze Minato's rise?
Normally, civilian ninja had no access to high-level jutsu. Just look at Haruno Sakura—she relied on the Clone, Transformation, Substitution for a long time after graduating. Her parents, Haruno Akira and Haruno Nabuki, were both chūnin, yet they never taught her a single jutsu. Probably because of village rules—or unspoken ones—that forbade civilians from passing down ninjutsu privately.
As a member of the Anbu, Getsushoku had some special privileges. Every mission he completed earned him merit points that he could exchange for advanced jutsu. It was a lot like a system. Only this system was far more generous than the Konoha leadership.
Though Getsushoku had Orochimaru as his backer, Orochimaru never seriously taught him anything. His status was basically the same as the Sound Four in the original story—expendable tools.
After all, Getsushoku was a survivor of human experimentation. No matter how confident Orochimaru was in his own charisma, he couldn't be sure that Getsushoku didn't hold a grudge.
Harboring resentment while maintaining surface-level respect because of circumstance—that was the norm. Just like a worker dealing with their boss.
Getsushoku had once considered using Shadow Clones to grind D-Rank missions. They were low-risk and easy. He remembered reading a fanfic where Naruto pulled that trick off.
It was a nice idea, but reality had other plans. Konoha had been operating for decades—how could it have such an obvious loophole?
D-Rank missions were meant for rookie graduates to practice with. There weren't any written rules, but it was an unwritten law. If you broke it, someone might call you in "for tea" to have a serious chat about the Will of Fire.
His little exploit attempt failed, but Getsushoku didn't mind. No matter the world, people were the same. Even in the shinobi world, there were always people finding ways to slack off. He'd just follow in the footsteps of the veterans.
...
Night fell, and darkness blanketed the Hidden Leaf.
On his way home, Getsushoku ran into Mitarashi Anko. The moment she saw him, her expression soured as if she'd swallowed a fly. Getsushoku didn't even spare her a glance.
Anko's face darkened even more.
Getsushoku hated Orochimaru. And by extension, he hated Anko too—for being able to live under the sun, cheerful and carefree under Orochimaru's protection.
But now, he didn't hate her quite as much. After all, he'd already ruined her.
To be Orochimaru's student, Anko clearly had potential. But Getsushoku had made sure to stunt her growth.
She'd become the dead last of her Academy class. Orochimaru hadn't shown even a hint of regret or disappointment—which left Getsushoku unexpectedly disheartened.
Anko was still technically Orochimaru's disciple and still enjoyed some privileges. But those perks only earned her more scorn, because her strength didn't match her status.
In truth, Anko didn't even have to attend academy. Many clan kids received elite education at home. For them, the Academy was just a social space.
Kakashi once said only 27 students graduated from the Academy each year. But during the Fourth Great Ninja War, Konoha deployed hordes of shinobi.
Clearly... anyone paying attention could tell what was really going on.
