Chapter 240 Trip to the mines

Uriel showed up at the gathering spot the next day wearing denim pants, a leather jacket, Jon's fedora hat and carrying a backpack filled with some of the supplies he needed and a whole lot of Cheeky chicken cups Medusa packed for him. He never liked cheeky chicken that much, in fact, he didn't like synthetic food anymore but, for some odd reason, Medusa was obsessed with it.

"Why are you not wearing the company's uniform?" Miss Dragonfang asked with a gaping mouth.

"They didn't have one my size." Uriel lied through his teeth. The reason for him not wearing the silly uniform Nika designed was because if he got hurt to the point where his clothes got destroyed, he wouldn't be able to replace it with clothes bought from his souvenir shop and he would be forced to expose either his souvenir shop by buying a different outfit or his passive regeneration ability.

"Ugh! You're so lucky! I really dislike uniforms, after leaving the army I was relieved thinking I would never have to wear one again."

"I'm just grateful I don't have to wear that uncomfortable armor anymore, besides my twins look amazing in this uniform." Phlox laughed.

"Your... twins?" Uriel looked at her with a clueless face until he realized what she was talking about and he nodded approvingly.

"You guys, do you know when is our team leader going to arrive?" Asked a muscular man who belonged to the Armstrong family.

"Sorry, I forgot to mention, I'm the one in charge of this operation." Said Amy as she joined the group and then gave a brief explanation of what they were supposed to do. The plan was pretty straightforward and the only person with questions was Amy herself, who didn't know how did she end up in her position.

Uriel was the one who asked her to act as the leader of the operation since they already shared a secret. This would allow him to keep some of his information a secret, but more importantly, it would drive attention away from him.

He was already struggling with finding any time for himself, if people knew he was the CEO of the Dungeon Raiders company they wouldn't let him alone and contrary to Sam, he didn't enjoy the attention from strangers.

The trip towards the dungeon was short and uneventful thanks to Blublu 2.0 as Connor called his new pickup truck. Though it wasn't big enough to carry everyone and instead they used it to carry the bulky mining equipment and the supplies.

Contrary to what one would expect, instead of reassuring them, the lack of cryptid sightings made them feel anxious. Walking across the streets of the lost city was always a frightening experience for them because creatures could creep on them from any position.

Uncertainty always defined incursions and it was actually when they were fighting that they felt the safest because they could see the threat, instead of the imminent danger.

The worst part came when they were getting closer to the dungeon, because the place was swarmed by an incredible amount of marbled statues in silent watchfulness.

"Remember, you must not touch any statue or they may become active. We don't know what triggers them, but it is believed they're some sort of guardians." Amy repeated the same words Uriel told her before setting off. Though in reality he didn't expect to see so many statues.

One of the reasons why he wanted to go right after the Mapple corporation was to make the most of their combat ability. If they wanted to enter the dungeons they had to clear the way before them, but it seemed as though they anticipated his scheme and sabotaged the delivery of their equipment forcing them to hire their own fighters.

"Why didn't they just kill them?" Miss Dragonfang asked, her expression was serious and professional. She didn't seem frightened, but there were no traces of her joking and lighthearted character.

"Two reasons. There's a horror rank cryptid among them and we don't know how to destroy them for good. No matter how many times you kill them, they always repair themselves even after crumbling down to pieces."

Now that the gate beneath the cathedral was open, they were able to enter the Happy hunting grounds and make their way towards the second world. This way, instead of entering through the sky islands they would appear from the hidden passage beneath the throne of Swallow chief.

But this was something only the Dungeon Raiders were able to do, since Sam's earring was the key to opening the stone door that blocke the way. Because of that, they made sure to time their movements so Sam would know exactly when to open the door and since the mining group got there early they had to spend some time hiding in one of the nearby buildings.

Once the gate was opened, an incredible event happened in front of their eyes. Uriel saw an immense flock of Air spirit people leaving the dungeon in a huge cloud of feathers and he managed to catch a glimpse of Swallow chief's bloodied figure.

Since Sam had no phone service inside the dungeon, Uriel rushed towards the entrance into the Happy hunting grounds to check if Sam was safe, but his worries were unwarranted.

"What happened, why are they leaving the dungeon?" Uriel asked his friend.

"Those idiots from the Celes company, they brought mining lasers and plasma cannons and didn't hesitate to fire at Swallow chief as soon as they saw him. The only thing I could think of was to open the gates and let the air spirit people leave." Sam clicked his tongue.

"What about..."

"She's fine, but she's leaving too. I guess I'm divorced now." Sam said with a disheartening smile. Seeing him so sad was just like seeing Medusa when she was hurt by Ethan. Although his pain wasn't physical, Uriel could tell he was utterly destroyed on the inside.

"I'm sorry for what you're going through." He said placing a comforting hand on Sam's shoulder, but he shook it off.

"Don't make fun of me, I know you don't really care. Just do your job, I'm out of here." Sam said as he pushed past Uriel without giving him a chance to clear the misunderstanding.
