Chapter 17: bad joke

"Are you questioning my sense of humor?" She frowned, feeling offended. "As president of the student council, of course I know what a joke is, and I'm very funny, by the way." She said proudly.

"Sona, the only joke I've heard from you, all this fucking time, is this one." I was serious, and she stared at me in disbelief at what I had said. "How rude!" She snorted and looked away with puffed cheeks.

"As if you're any better at telling jokes." She muttered, settling back down on the bench.

"Of course, I'm very good at jokes. Want to hear one? It will even help you understand the current situation." She laughed arrogantly, underestimating me, but let me continue.

"A rich man threw a party and jokingly offered a million dollars to anyone who would jump into the pool and fight with their bare hands against his giant, deadly crocodile. However, before he even finished speaking, he heard someone jump into the water." Sona listened silently, waiting for the outcome, while nibbling on some snacks I had set aside for her.

"A brave, strong Australian man with a beard exchanged blows with the crocodile as if his life depended on it, and surprisingly, he won and emerged from the pool victorious." She laughed softly and commented, "Did it have to be an Australian?" I just nodded."Of course, have you ever seen how Australia is? These guys are crazy." I cough

"As soon as he got out, the rich man said, 'My boy, I was just kidding, but since you won, I'll have to give you a prize. I'll give you over a million dollars. Just tell me what you want, and I'll give it to you. I'll even give you this mansion!'" She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and then rested the head on hand.

"However, the Australian dismissed the offer and said he just only wanted one single thing: 'I don't need money, not even this mansion, I just want to catch the son of a bitch who pushed me into the pool and feed him to this motherfucker crocodile!'" She laughed again, this time with renewed humor, while I surprised slowly let a soft smile escape.

She looks so happy.

By the way, I didn't find my own joke funny, but she did...

I sighed.

There's something wrong with me today...

"And how does that relate to our situation? Are we going to need an Australian too?" She tilted her head to the side and asked, still trying to stop laughing.

"It was a joke, the rich guy, I mean, he never made a real proposal, it was all a joke. But someone took it seriously and he had to treat it as if it were real.People would blame him if he didn't and then the judges and advocates as you might expect." She slowly began to realize." He should have said that is a joke,Law doesn't know what a joke is, if someone believe It then you are in trouble."

"It makes sense, but so what? If the Phenex wanted to treat it all as a joke, they would never have given a token, not Lord Phenex." I agreed with her, she was right after all."Exactly, neither me nor you believed it was a joke. He doesn't make it explicit enough."

"It's kind of simple when you think about it, the question is, would you marry a prostitute? Would a noble man like him marry his toy?" She slowly analyzed my words with a frown.

"No... unless..." She looked at me deeply again and explained her thoughts.

"Unless you want the best possible service for free, in which case you tell her you're going to marry her, that you're in love and much more. You even leave a card with your contact information and leave, promising to come back and get her and his bastard children…" She's right, a common situation in the human world. "This is a bad joke…"

"I've seen this happen a lot myself and figured it might be that, but of course the situation could still get worse. Lord Phenex isn't human after all." She narrowed her eyes at my words.

"It's my speculation, but I heard some strange things there, two in particular. One was a passing comment and the other a legend." Sona motioned for me to continue.

"The person from whom I inherited the token always complained about where she was and how she wanted to leave. This was somewhat unusual, considering that she liked the

foreign countries, had money, even if she was stingy, and could easily leave the countryside." The old woman seemed strange in this regard, but she was not just any old woman; she was the original bearer of the token.

"The second was a bizarre legend about a young man who had died in the mountains and would return from time to time to seek something more precious than life. To me, it's an expression that can only mean the token. There are not many precious things in a farming town" She made a comment at this point.

"A bastard son who didn't age like the others and for some reason couldn't leave the village, just like the one who gave you the token, and preferred to fake his own death. A curse, you think?" I shook my head. "Almost that."

"A curse with conditions, something like, my bastard descendants cannot leave the village, and citizens who know about the use of the token or about me are trapped forever. Devils are less fertile, so I didn't think of any curse related to abortion, but it's a possibility considering the low birth rate."

"It's a terrible joke, to say the least..." She said, getting angrier and angrier. "But it makes sense, many devils don't care about their bastards, considering the filthy blood freaks even more so when they're mixed with other species." She had guessed most of it, but something was still missing.

"Whatever the exact conditions of the curse, he would want no one to leave with that token, especially a bastard." At that point, she frowned and looked at me questioningly. "And you're here, introduced by me... but how?"

"The Sitris found a lost Phenex descendant and are going to use him for some nefarious conspiracy or something like that." I finished the sentence and she finally understood what had happened, but she still looked at me questioningly.

"How did you get out of there?" Not wanting to go on too long, I got straight to the point.

"I'm not a descendant of theirs and didn't even know about the use of the token, it was just another valuable stone to me. The original bearer may have thought I was the bastard and turned me in, if he didn't die he should be looking for a way to escape from there."

"It was a coincidence that I discovered its use, and you got involved in it too. Now we have to deal with the Phenex's anger, and I doubt they'll accept any justification, not that I dislike this way." She looked grim.

"Technically I prefer this way. "
