"You know that this isn't necessary at all, right?" Willow looked at Cedric exasperatedly. "If you had wanted to file for a leave, you could've just told us. There's no need for you to dump a lot of work on us before you leave."
"Well...sorry? I got a little too immersed in it." Cedric said in a slightly embarassed tone.
Roughly nine months passed since the Dragon Chancellor led the army to invade the void and killed the Void Prince. Since then, the Border Patrol Guardians entered a period of stable development...on the surface at least.
During this time, Cedric remained focused on his own progress. He would either be training, cultivating, or going to work.
Because of his dedication and diligence, his efforts paid off. At last, he had gained sufficient mastery over the Cosmic Furnace Spell that he could use it to break through to the Transitional Realm.
To say that he's excited would be an understatement. To Cedric, it has been ages since he made some progress in his cultivation, which isn't true at all, but it still felt like it anyway.
According to the records he read in his free time, breaking through the Tranistional Realm takes time. It might take them a week up to multiple months, depending on the degree of refinement they wanted for themselves.
Knowing this, Cedric thought that he should settle some things before he enters seclusion, just to minimize any possibilities of interruption.
This led him to go nuts in his job as a translator, even more so than normal. He had finished at least a year's worth of work in just a day just to keep everybody in the team busy without him.
Mind you, on normal days, Cedric already settles at least a month's worth of work and his teammates are already falling behind. Now, he just unceremoniously dumped a year's worth of work for them to go through because he's going to seclude himself.
It is for this reason that Willow could only helplessly remind him that this was truly unnecessary. Because even if Cedric just filed for a leave without doing any work, it would've been approved without any scruples.
This will most likely cause his teammates to be dissatisified with him, and it turn, cause headache for both Willow and Chief Blackwood.
"Whatever. Just don't do it again. Or at the very least, inform me or Master first." Willow shook his bulb-shaped head at this. What's done is done, after all.
And all things considered, the materials Cedric provided was only beneficial to the team. It's just a little more work than the usual.
"Well, you go on then. And congratulations in advance, you better treat us to a meal after you ended your seclusion."
Cedric was pleased at the confident tone in Willow's voice. He nodded in agreement and turned around to leave the building.
As soon as he exited the building though, he was greeted by somebody.
From the silhouette alone, everybody could tell that this person was a lady. Her face is covered by a thin veil obscuring her facial features. She has a lean and curvy physique, hugged by her bright colored clothes. Also, she has two sets of arms, one of them was entirely golden.
"Greetings, Mentor. Thank you for coming." Cedric smiled and politely greeted upon seeing her.
"Mn." The lady hummed in reply. "Come, there's already a room prepared for you."
This four-armed lady was none other than Roderika, the Cosmic level expert that Silas and Hunyo sent to Cedric once he reached the peak of the Grand Solar Realm. She was the one who told him why the method of advancing to the Cosmic Level in Life Evolution was kept as a 'secret', and she's also the one who gave him a copy of the Cosmic Furnace Spell.
While Cedric didn't usually bother her with questions even though she's technically his mentor, out of respect to her and to both Silas and Hunyo too, he informed her when he mastered the Cosmic Furnace Spell and invited her to witness his breakthrough.
Cedric followed her to the room she told him about. He didn't ask how she did this since as far as could remember, she's not a Paragon of the Border Patrol Guardians, but at the same time, it's not like she could come and leave this place like its her backyard. This visit should've been recorded and she must have some level of authority here to do this, that's why Cedric wasn't reall all that troubled following her arrangements.
They flew until they reached a rather unpopulated area of the camp. Here, there were several buildings that looked abadoned for some reason. There were some people here, but nobody paid attention to them.
Cedric continued following her until they went inside one of those tall buildings. They didn't go up, though. It's more like they couldn't because upon entering the building, Cedric discovered that there were no elevators or stairs that would take them above.
There were no higher floors here. The building was hollow, peppered with numerous runes and formations.
"I was surprised when I saw your message." Roderika spoke all of a sudden, prompting Cedric to pay attention to her.
"All things considered, I wasn't a good mentor to you. I should've been more hands-on. I should've checked your progress more regularly and should've guided you more. Because at the very least, I owe Hunyo that much, and that applies to you too in extension."
There was a hint of apology and remorse in her voice as she said this.
"However, do forgive me but I have one request before you begin you break through preparations." Roderika then asked: "Can you display you mastery over the Cosmic Furnace Spell to me first?"
"Because, honestly, it's too fast." Roderika sounded a little suspicious here. "It hasn't even been 3 whole years since I gave you a copy of the spell and your service here."
"Sure, you've studied and comprehended Concept Laws as a whole instead of majoring in one and moving from there. But still, to think that you'd already come this far...forgive me for being a little too suspicious because it does sound too good to be true."
"I understand." Cedric replied humbly, "Even I am surprised by my progress so please, give me a verdict."
With that said, Cedric began displaying his mastery over each refinement chapters of the Cosmic Furnace Spell by refining materials.
He started witht he five fundamental elements of fire, water, metal, wood, and earth. Then, he displayed his mastery over the lightning, time, and space refinements next. He concluded his performance by displaying his skills with life and death refinement. There was no need for Karma because that comes automatically.
Witnessing his performance, Roderika was speechless for quite sometime.
What Cedric didn't know, especially since nobody aside from her had seen his mastery so far, is that his skills have gone way past the skil requirement for self-refinement.
Roderika herself did not reach that level of mastery back then, and she's still able to come this far.
'Is it because he's talented or is this a racial thing?' Roderika couldn't help but wonder.
But then she realized that this was no time to ponder over this, so instead, she said:
"Alright, good. You can start your preparations now. Don't be in a hurry, you have time. Adjust your current state and only begin once your body, mind, and spirit are all in sync."
After saying this, Roderika made her presence scarce within the room. But before she did this, she activated the enchantments on the building which turned it into an isolated room perfect for seclusion.
Under her watch, Cedric made himself comfortable. He took out a few things from his inventory and began making himself a meal. After that, he cleaned himself and slept for a bit.
Just like she suggested, Cedric wasn't in a hurry. Sure, he's been anticipating this day for a long time now, it won't hurt to wait for a few more just to ensure that he's completely ready for it.
Roderika didn't say much. Truthfully, she could've told him that with his level of skill and mastery over the Cosmic Furnace Spell, there's hardly anything stopping him from making a smooth breakthrough.
The reason why she kept silent was because she didn't want him to be too confident. A little wariness goes a long way.
And so, within this building that's essentially now cut off from any outside influence, Cedric took his time. And once he felt like his body, mind, and spirit were completely in sync, he sat cross-legged and unsealed his cultivation base.
His suppressed energies reacted almost violently once the seal was lifted. Even he underestimated how agreesive the reaction was, but it's no problem. Cedric has it all under control in no time.
That said, his cultivation base impacted the barrier with hardly any input from him. And in no time, the barrier shattered under the impact.
And as soon as it was destroyed, Cedric felt an unknown force lifting his consciousness to another level, and with his remaining awareness, began summoning the elements to begin his physical transition.
Cedric's focus was entirely on his breakthrough that he had failed to notice the wave of doom suddenly sweeping throughout the entire camp.
