Chapter 102: Rebirth Of The Calamity
Lilith sat up weakly, her breath shallow as Ren supported her. His left arm wrapped around her, serving as a stabilizer for her as her legs swung over the bed to the ground.
When he was sure she was stable, he released her, his right hand presenting the glowing ball that was Anders' soul.
"Here." He murmured, placing it in her trembling hands. "Dig into every memory in this soul. Find the antidote."
Lilith nodded, taking the soul from him. She frowned in concentration as she held it with both hands, her fingers sinking into the soul like mist. The air around her seemed to shimmer as her eyes fluttered shut.
Ren watched in silence as an expression of concentration appeared on her face, her soul energy digging into Anders' soul, plying it for everything it had to give.
Ren watched with bated breath, not knowing what to do. Then, her eyes snapped open.
She let go of the soul, and like a piece of lego made for this exact purpose, it snapped towards Ren and plunged into his chest before he could even react.
A wave of energy rippled through his veins, sinking deep inside him. He gasped, his body locking up for a moment as something clicked into place inside him.
It's the same.
He stared down at his hands with wide eyes. That was the same space within him that blood had pooled in for him to advance.
His mind worked, trying to make sense of what had just happened. His Bloodbinding had been transformed into Soulbinding, but the mechanics hadn't changed. The energy coursing through him still craved progression, still required something to advance.
Not soul energy. Actual souls.
Soul energy was like the blood in his veins he used to power his Bloodbinding, while souls are like the blood he stored within himself to advance. If he wanted to get to Rank 4, he needed souls.
"Ren?" Lilith's voice pulled him from his realization. "The antidote… It's in Anders' private vault."
Ren focused on her, putting everything he'd just learnt at the back of his mind. "Where?"
She inhaled slowly, collecting her strength. "The vault is beneath his private mansion and there's only one way to access it."
"There's a hidden path in his sitting room. You need to remove the wall behind his favorite chair. If you phase through, you'll find nothing. You need to physically remove it. And behind it is a stairway leading down to his vault."
She told him everything else he needed to know to get to the antidote, and Ren stood, nothing. "I'll be back."
Without hesitation, he teleported.
He appeared in the middle of Anders' sitting room, the place looking empty. There were spaces where the furniture that had been dragged into Anders' hell had been.
He glanced around the room, taking in all the places where his coins, those that hadn't been dragged with him into Anders' hell, still lay.
He stretched his hand out and they bounced around the room before coming to rest on his palm.
No use leaving evidence behind.
His gaze landed on the chair Anders always used before drifting to the wall behind it. Without wasting time, he strode forward, plunging his hand into the stone.
While it wasn't soft, his hand sank into it with little effort. His fingers hooked the stone and he pulled. It sheared off, dust and debris scattering across the floor.
He didn't stop there, pulling stone away and creating a hole in the wall. He worked, widening the hole until it was big enough to walk through. He looked up to see a staircase leading down into darkness.
He stepped inside, his footsteps silent as he followed Lilith's instructions. He took the staircase two steps at a time, arriving at an iron door set into the wall at the bottom.
He inhaled, pressing his hands to the surface of the door, following the pattern Lilith had shown him.
One tap.
A pause.
Two presses to the right side.
One final push.
The door clicked.
With a slow creak, it swung open, revealing a vault filled with gold trimmed boxes and what he was sure was a few Rank 4 artifacts.
He ignored all of it, moving to a safe at the far corner of the room. His hands flashed in the unlocking sequence, following the pattern Lilith had extracted from Anders' soul.
The safe snapped open.
Inside, a small black vial sat on a stack of documents and sealed letters. The antidote.
Ren grabbed it and, only then, allowed himself to scan the room fully.
His brows rose as he took in the amount of wealth that was stored in the vault. Fuck! If the youngest Vermilion is this rich, how rich are the others?
He moved to the chests that contained gold, dragging them until they were stacked in the middle of the vault. By his estimate, there should be at least six hundred thousand gold coins in the chests.
No reason to leave it behind.
With a grin, he placed a hand over the pile and teleported.
There was a quiet puff as he reappeared in front of Lilith, the chests of gold behind him.
He immediately knelt down beside her, popping off the cork and pressing the antidote into her hands. "Drink."
She didn't hesitate. Her fingers curled around the vial as she lifted it to her lips.
The liquid inside was thick, and almost luminous. She gulped it down before handing the empty vial back to Ren.
Silence.
"Is it working?" Ren asked, the cold hand of fear gripping his heart.
Just as Lilith began shaking her head, the antidote kicked in.
She arched forward, gasping as energy erupted from her heart, bursting outward like an avalanche.
A brilliant blue-white light enveloped her body, so bright that Ren had to shield his eyes. He almost staggered back as the air itself trembled, waves of soul energy rippling through the room.
Phantom notes of music whispered in the air before disappearing. The light began dimming and as Ren peeked behind the hand he'd used to shield his face, he saw it.
Her hair.
Her dark hair began turning pure white, the color bleeding out of them like ink dissolving in water.
The energy pouring off her changed, gaining more metaphysical weight as it tingled along Ren's skin, goosebumps appearing on it.
Lilith's eyes slowly opened, glowing softly in the night.
Ren exhaled, barely able to whisper as he stared at her in awe.
"Lilith…?"
