Chapter 344: Extra Ch 1 : Ten year mission
Four Years Ago, Year 780
Warm sunlight poured down onto the earth.
On this day, at the turning point between spring and summer, the weather was neither as hot and dry as the height of summer, nor as damp and rainy as early spring.
It was a pleasantly comfortable day.
At some point, the green grass had already spread across the entire plain.
The lush green, full of life, swayed gently with the breeze, like nimble little sprites leaping about.
It gave people an involuntary sense of ease and openness in their hearts.
The sky was a pure and beautiful azure, untainted like fine jade, stretching endlessly to who knows where.
A train was traveling along the tracks on the plain.
The loud hiss of the steam whistle and the rhythmic clanking of the wheels brought a bit of liveliness to this quiet landscape.
Inside one of the train cars.
It was a sparsely populated carriage.
Only a few people sat scattered around, speaking softly to one another.
Yet even so, the most eye-catching figures in the car were not those conversing passengers, but rather two boys—one with golden hair and the other with yellow hair—sitting together.
The two boys were around sixteen or seventeen years old.
One of them had soft, shoulder-length pale golden hair flowing loosely around him.
His handsome face was adorned with a pair of sky-blue eyes, clear and bright.
Sitting on the inner side of the seat, near the window, the golden-haired boy rested his chin on his right hand, his gentle gaze quietly observing the scenery outside.
Though his posture was casual, he unconsciously exuded a noble and composed aura—like that of an aristocrat.
It was a pride that emanated from his very soul, a quiet elegance as if born of fire and spirit, akin to the eerie beauty of a red spider lily blooming in the underworld.
The few girls in the car couldn't help but glance his way repeatedly, secretly wondering which kingdom's noble young lord had come out traveling.
The blond-haired boy sitting on the aisle side had a completely different air from the golden-haired one.
His handsome face always bore a slight smirk at the corners of his lips, forming an arc laced with contempt.
A lightning-shaped mark adorned the area around his right eye, and his yellow hair stood upright in sharp strands.
He wore headphones over both ears, eyes closed as if dozing.
Though silent, he exuded a wild, rebellious energy—fearless and untamed.
It was a kind of unforgettable charisma, the kind that burned itself into your memory with just a single glance.
Perhaps growing tired of the monotonous scenery outside the window, the golden-haired boy finally retracted his gaze and looked down at a sheet of paper in his hand, covered in writing.
"Ten-Year Mission — Ancient City.
Mission Summary:
The ancient city of Anphel was once a human settlement in ancient times.
However, near the end of that era, the city fell under attack by unidentified dark creatures.
Its elite forces were entirely wiped out, leading to the city's decline.
Even now, two-thirds of the city remains occupied by dark creatures.
But thanks to the 'Sanctum Barrier' that isolates these creatures from human habitation, the people within the city have still been able to live in peace.
Recently, however, strange phenomena have begun to occur—the ancient magic formation known as the Sanctum Barrier, which protects and governs the city, has shown signs of going out of control and fading.
Alongside this, certain citizens have suddenly turned into zombies.
The cause is unknown.
Powerful magic users are requested to investigate this matter."*
The golden-haired boy read the contents aloud in a quiet voice, a thoughtful expression appearing on his face.
"Laxus, what do you think?" the golden-haired boy asked softly, turning to the yellow-haired boy beside him.
Upon hearing the question, the yellow-haired boy—who had kept his eyes closed—slowly opened them, his brows furrowing slightly.
"There's already quite a lot to be concerned about just from what's written on the mission notice," he said.
"First: If there's a magic like the 'Sanctum Barrier,' why did the elite forces of humanity still suffer such heavy casualties, to the point that two-thirds of the city was lost? And the description of the Sanctum Barrier's effects is vague at best—it feels like they're deliberately hiding something. That really stands out.
Second: Why do the remaining people insist on staying in Anphel, choosing to live alongside dark creatures rather than leave? Is it due to land or resources? It feels like there's something deeper behind it.
Third: The connection between the Sanctum Barrier's abnormality and the sudden appearance of zombies among the citizens…"
"Mm. Even setting aside the strange parts of the mission itself, the very existence of Anphel is suspicious in many ways. The Council clearly dumped this on us on purpose," the golden-haired boy said, scratching his cheek with a wry grin.
"I heard this Ten-Year Mission has already taken the lives of quite a few S-Class mages."
He folded the paper carefully and tucked it into his pocket, a faint smile of intrigue playing at the corners of his lips.
"Well, regardless, we've already accepted it. Let's wait until we reach the destination before drawing any conclusions. This is our first time teaming up for a mission, after all. If we mess this up, we'll never live it down."
"Tch. There's no way that's gonna happen," the yellow-haired boy—Laxus—replied coldly.
"And just so we're clear, even if you die during the mission, I'm not going to save you, Noel."
"Hey, hey... that's a bit heartless, don't you think?" Noel said with a wry smile, shaking his head.
Just then, Laxus seemed to sense something.
He frowned slightly and shot a discreet glance at Noel—only to meet Noel's gaze, which was filled with curiosity and interest.
The two locked eyes for a moment, and in that instant, each could tell they were thinking the exact same thing.
..............
"Keh keh keh… so these two are the ones the Archbishop mentioned—the ones who are going to get in our way, huh, Kadi?"
While Noel and Laxus were talking, two figures—one tall, one short—stood atop the moving train.
The strong wind from the train's motion didn't seem to affect them in the slightest.
Through the skylight windows on the roof of the carriage, the two figures were watching Noel and Laxus intently with eerie, sinister gazes.
"Should be no mistake," the man named Kadi replied.
"The intel said it's two boys on this train, and they're the only ones with magical signatures. Plus, the magic they're giving off is quite powerful."
"Still… is it really necessary to be this cautious about a couple of brats?" the shorter figure sneered.
"The Archbishop is being way too careful. Our Church has two Grand Protectors and a whole force of powerful warriors. I don't believe these kids could actually pose a threat to us."
"A lion uses its full strength even when hunting a rabbit, Jason. Our Church has been preparing for this grand undertaking for a long time. We cannot allow even the slightest interference to jeopardize our cause. The Archbishop entrusted us with this mission because I have the power to conceal presence, and you have the power of teleportation. Together, we're the perfect team for the job. The Archbishop has placed great trust in us."
Kadi's voice rose slightly, carrying a fanatical fervor that was impossible to ignore.
"Yeah, you're right. Let's take care of this quickly and head back," Jason nodded, placing a square-shaped device on the roof of the train.
A cold smile crept across his face.
"Heh… a high-powered magic bomb. I refuse to believe they could survive this unguarded and live to tell the tale."
"Oh? A magic bomb? That does sound pretty dangerous."
A sudden voice from behind made both of them freeze in place.
They turned around in disbelief—only to see Laxus and Noel standing there with arms crossed, their expressions calm and full of disdain.
"Impossible! You were just—"
"When did you get behind us?!"
As if realizing something, Kadi quickly turned his gaze back to the glass window on the train roof—where Laxus and Noel still appeared to be sitting calmly in their seats.
Noticing the confusion on their faces, Noel chuckled and snapped his fingers.
The Laxus and Noel inside the train instantly dissolved into white light and vanished.
