Chapter 140: Chapter 140: The World of the Gods
Charles stood atop a hillside, shading his eyes from the blinding sunlight with one hand, allowing himself a clearer look at the massive city sprawled before him.
The terrain where he stood wasn't exactly low, but even so, he couldn't see the full extent of the city. The towering city walls were just too massive. Built of enormous stone blocks, the walls encircled the city like a mountain range—clearly more fortress than town. Even if tens of thousands of soldiers were to besiege it, it would not fall easily.
From what Charles observed, the people passing through the gates were all armed with cold weapons like swords and knives. As for magical energy, he could sense only a few faint traces—very weak ones at that—scattered among the crowd. Most of the people here clearly lacked the aptitude to use magic, or at least couldn't wield it at any significant level.
For a moment, Charles even suspected he had ended up in a world with a low power scale—but he quickly dismissed the thought.
Because deep within the city, he sensed many powerful presences. Especially one, at the very center, that felt like an abyss. Its depth and intensity made Charles' heart instinctively tremble.
Rather than a fortress, this city felt more like a prison—one that contained the most dangerous existence in the world.
Looking up, Charles found that the source of the terrifying aura came from the only visible building within the city's interior.
It was a colossal cylindrical tower that pierced the heavens. Towering above the city, its spire was veiled in clouds so thick that its top was invisible—reaching straight into the sky itself.
Lowering his hand, Charles began walking toward the city gate.
This dimension jump had been entirely unplanned. But since he was already here, he wasn't about to waste the opportunity. He had to make this trip worthwhile.
His top priority now was to figure out exactly what kind of world he had entered. Only then could he consider his next steps.
That enormous tower gave him a nagging sense of familiarity.
As he pondered, Charles arrived at the city gate and was immediately stopped by the guards.
"Name?"
"Charles Gidofmel."
"Do you have a special permit?"
"No."
"Are you an adventurer?"
Charles blinked. Adventurer? Was this that kind of fantasy world? Almost instinctively, he shook his head.
The guard didn't seem surprised. With a practiced motion, he told Charles to turn around. He then used a lantern-like device hanging from his belt to scan Charles' back.
"No problem. You can go in. Good luck."
"You're not even going to ask why I came to this city?" Charles asked, puzzled.
The guard chuckled. "Why else would a young man like you come to this place? Isn't Orario the dreamland for every aspiring adventurer?"
Charles walked through the gate, his eyes lifting toward the bustling city within.
And just like that, he finally understood where he was.
Orario—plus that sky-piercing tower. Only one world had such unique landmarks.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? This was the world he had landed in.
This was a world where gods truly existed. And more importantly, they didn't sit aloof in the heavens—they lived right here in this very city.
Long ago, a chasm had opened in the land. Monsters had poured out of it, ravaging human and demi-human lands alike. The first heroes, aided by the fairies, had fought them back and sealed the depths, beginning the first epic era of heroism.
Perhaps moved by those legendary heroes—or perhaps just bored of the heavens—the gods descended to the mortal realm. They sealed away their divine powers and joined mortals in life, sealing the abyss into what was now called the Dungeon.
To mortals, the gods offered something called the Falna, or Divine Blessing—a sacred contract.
In essence, they turned mortals into stat-sheeted players. The only difference was that this game called adventuring came with no respawn feature.
With the Falna, mortals could grow exponentially stronger, and more heroes arose. Countless new legends were forged in the Dungeon's depths.
What had happened at the gate was simply the guard using a magic tool to sense whether Charles had been granted a Falna.
To Charles, this world's Divine Blessing was a true miracle. And this miracle might just hold a sliver of hope for saving Igneel. After all, resurrection magic really existed in this world.
So now, his top priority was to join a Familia and receive a Falna—becoming an adventurer.
Receiving a Falna was like becoming part of a god's family. The adventurers who banded together under the same deity formed a Familia.
Orario was home to countless Familia, each with their own specialty—whether dungeon exploration, logistics and production, public order, or commerce.
Charles, naturally, would need to choose one that suited him.
While the Falna could grant skills aligned with one's wishes and training, only the larger Familia had access to unique knowledge.
In the source material, Freya could casually gift Bell a rare grimoire. And the finest equipment was only craftable by Hephaestus or Gubalnu's Familias.
Of course, the top-tier Familia weren't likely to accept just anyone. Charles had no idea if he'd be turned away.
He sighed and set out to begin his search.
Combat-oriented Familia were his backup plan. Charles was confident his magic and martial prowess would stand out even in this world.
But he had his eyes on Familia that specialized in rare skills—magic, alchemy, forging.
Falna could grant special Development Abilities—akin to class-specific traits in games.
What Charles wanted most was the legendary Development Ability , said to be the highest tier, and necessary for crafting Philosopher's Stones.
But was the rarest of the rare. Very few had the aptitude to awaken it. Worse still, there was no known way to learn it.
So the next best option was . It could be awakened by simply training in the forging arts.
And Charles wanted to try creating weapons that could house souls.
