Chapter 68: 68. Last Candidate
The 3rd trial is a battle, finally. Both Alex and Samuel need to fight each other. Only the winner can go to the next stage. But Samuel who managed to collect all 10 flags in the previous stage receives a reward to help him in this stage.
Samuel can choose 1 of the failed candidates to help him in this stage. So he will have a teammate while Alex will be alone. If Alex also collected 10 flags, then Samuel's reward can be removed because both of them get the same rewards.
Without thinking too much, Samuel chooses Zico for an obvious reason. Samuel uses Explosion Magic, an offensive type, so Zico's Barrier Magic, a defensive type, is the best choice to help him in this round.
Joy is not chosen, but she is actually happy because she doesn't need to fight. If she is chosen, then she will only help Samuel to win while she doesn't get any benefit because she won't be promoted anyway.
On the other hand, Zico is actually happy to be chosen because it makes him feel like he is still in the competition. He also always wants to fight the other S-Class candidates, especially Alex the rising star.
The arena is near the camp. They do it a while after the previous trial finishes. So both Alex and Samuel are quite tired, but this is also a challenge for them because S-Class jobs can force them to keep working or even fighting for hours or days.
Alex chooses to transform into Mini Isobu. Even though it's a Mini Isobu, he is still as big as a small car. Isobu doesn't have a humanoid form because of all his heavy shells that makes it hard to stand with just 2 legs, so he only has a Mini form.
Everyone who sees Alex transforms into Isobu thinks that he will focus on defense. It's not a bad idea because he is fighting 2 people alone. Also, he doesn't know how good his opponents will be, so being defensive might be the correct choice.
But they don't expect that Alex in Mini Isobu form still has great attack power. Right after the match starts, a blue magic circle appears in front of Alex's mouth. Then from that blue magic circle, some big water balls are shot toward his opponents.
They are surprised, but Zico quickly reacts by making a big barrier wall to block the water bullets. Once again, everyone is surprised by the water bullets' power. They don't break Zico's barrier wall, but they push it back.
Zico has used all his power, but he can't stop the water bullets from pushing his barrier wall. He wants to ask Samuel to help him, but he suddenly sees some red balls flying beside him. They are flying from behind him toward Alex.
Samuel shoots those red balls toward Alex, but Alex sees them and shoots water bullets at them. The water and red bullets clash and big explosions happen all over the arena. Those red balls are Samuel's Explosion Magic Balls that can create powerful explosions upon contact.
If Alex doesn't hit them with his Water Bullets, they will hit him and explode on his body. Though they fail to hit him, they succeed in making him stop attacking. So now Zico is freed from his attacks.
"Zico, trap him!" Samuel gives an order while running toward Alex.
Suddenly, a wide white magic circle appears beneath Alex's feet. Then a thick barrier dome appears on him, trapping him inside it. Samuel gets closer to the barrier dome and touches the barrier dome, making it glow red.
"Mine Field!"
Many small red magic circles appear all over the barrier dome. Alex doesn't know how Samuel will attack him when there's a barrier separating them. He gets even more confused when Samuel moves back very quickly.
Alex gets the answer very quickly in a very bad way. The spell that Samuel uses makes everything he touches into explosives. So now the barrier that encapsulates Alex has turned into a bomb and it explodes after Samuel gets away.
The explosion is really strong. It sends the pieces of destroyed ground and rocks around it everywhere. Samuel used a lot of magic power in that attack because he knew a half-hearted attack won't work against Alex's Mini Isobu's defense.
With that much magic power, Samuel manages to injure Alex's Mini Isobu form. There are some parts that aren't covered with shells and those are the areas that get damaged. But Alex manages to cover the vital areas like his face with his armored arms by curling his body at the last moment.
"Damn! That hurts."
Alex is annoyed by it, but now he is more confused why someone like Samuel couldn't pass the S-Class exam in the series and then retires before the main story starts. Well, the retirement is normal because of Samuel's age, but his power is decent enough to be an S-Class.
Though Alex can guess that it's because this is Fairy Tail. They have higher standards for S-Class than most Guilds. Samuel might have been able to become an S-Class years ago in other Guilds, but he always failed the exam in Fairy Tail.
Alex can see that Samuel has used a lot of his magic power for the previous attack. But Alex won't let Samuel use more attacks like that even though he can take that kind of attack a few more times because they hurt.
So Alex makes his move again. He suddenly jumps quite high, which surprises everyone because his Mini Isobu form should be heavy. Yet he can jump quite high in it.
Then Alex rolls himself like an armadillo. He rolls very fast and attacks his opponents with his rolling body. His rolling attack is very dangerous because his body is covered with hard shells that have sharp spikes all over them.
Zico tries to block Alex's attack with his Barrier Wall again, but now Alex manages to destroy it instead of just pushing it back. He forces Samuel and Zico to move to dodge his rolling attack because the barrier is destroyed.
Alex chases Samuel by rolling. He can move very fast even in his heavy Mini Isobu form when he rolls. So Samuel has a hard time running away from Alex. Samuel uses his Explosion Magic to fight back, but his spells are useless because Alex is fully covered with hard shells now.
After a short chase, Alex finally manages to hit Samuel. He bulldozes everything in his path and sends Samuel fly quite far. Zico tries to help by creating barrier walls, but they all get destroyed easily by Alex.
Samuel is out just by that one hit from the rolling Alex. His whole body is covered with hard corals after Alex hits him. It's Isobu's special ability to produce corals.
Alex uses it to protect Samuel from his powerful body roll that can rip Samuel's body because of the hard spikes all over Mini Isobu's shells. It's also useful to seal Samuel's body, so now Samuel can't move because his whole body is covered with corals that connect with each other.
Samuel gives up easily because he can't move now and the impact from Alex's attack still hurts a lot. Some of his bones are broken because of it, so he can't continue the fight.
This means Alex wins this trial and can continue to the next trial. The next trial is tomorrow, so Alex can rest tonight. The other 3 participants will return to Magnolia and this might be their last time in Tenrou Island.
Samuel has planned to retire if he fails this exam because of his age and the other 2 might also retire soon, or worse, they might die before the main story starts because Alex doesn't remember them to be in the main story.
Mages' death isn't an unusual thing because they are doing dangerous jobs. As someone with a heart, Alex obviously wants to protect his friends. But he is just 1 person and it's impossible to prevent everyone from dying no matter how strong he is.
'I hope they just retire and aren't dead.' Alex can only hope like that when he sees the other 3 failed candidates leave the island.
The next day, they start the next trial. It's the last trial for this S-Class exam and surely is the most difficult trial. Others might even call this stage impossible to clear because Alex needs to face Laxus, Gildarts, and Makarov in this trial, all by himself.
