Chapter 449: Although I am very strong, I am a good baby
Alerted that something was definitely wrong, Chen Ying signaled to Dai Wang, and the two slowly moved closer together, eventually standing back to back by the skeleton.
The atmosphere was so eerie, a bit of BGM added to it, making it like a Chinese horror movie set.
"Mr. Chen, to your left, no, your right."
Dai Wang's eyes didn't dare blink, his tone dry, his voice seemed to squeeze out between his teeth.
Chen Ying glanced in the direction he mentioned, his eyes widened instantly.
It was a bear, no mistaking it, but this bear's fur was light yellow, like the color of yellow mud water splattered on a rainy day.
"White Bear?" Chen Ying stared at the big fellow in surprise, "Wow, it came without any effort."
As soon as he finished speaking, he heard a voice from above.
"Mr. Chen, Chen, are you down there?"
"Brother Ying, the police officers are here, what are you still doing down there?"
As it was getting darker, not suitable for scene investigation, the responding police officers only brought barricade lines and rain tarps.
Although it's unknown how long the remains have been there, having been discovered, they cannot let them continue being exposed to the elements.
"Don't rush down, there's a bear here, a white one."
Chen Ying stopped them from coming down, also nudged Dai Wang aside to have him find a place to hide.
Then, he faced the white bear, trying hard to release his goodwill.
The white bear hesitated briefly, slowly approaching him.
A bear's sight isn't great, but its sense of smell is extremely sharp.
White Bear raised its head, sniffed him, suddenly stood up, and let out a bear roar.
"Good baby, don't be scared, can I help you with something?"
Chen Ying sensed a bit of grievance in the bear's roar, like a five hundred-pound baby suddenly finding a protector, disregarding its large body, issuing a childlike plaintive complaint.
"Did they frighten you? And trample on your food?"
Chen Ying held Big Bear's paw, listening to the white bear's whimpers, full of grievances.
"Alright, alright, they're the bad guys, I'll have someone bring you food as compensation, okay?"
Upon hearing about food, White Bear sat down comfortably, leaned against the tree trunk and rubbed against it, obediently waiting to be fed.
Meanwhile, the four students and the innkeeper, who were scared to death pretending dead in the tree earlier, circled back uphill.
Upon going up they realized Chen Ying and Dai Wang went down as well, the innkeeper was immediately scared with soft legs, yet still wanted to support the rescue.
"Don't worry, Brother Ying should be alright, their lights are very stable, besides he's dealt with bears often, should be able to calm the white bear."
"White, white bear? No, that bear is yellow."
"Yeah, but Shennong White Bear isn't pure white at all, it's at least different from albino bears and Arctic bears, its fur is pale orange or straw yellow."
Dao Meihua wasn't an animal researcher, but she did her homework before coming here, this basic knowledge, she remembered after just one reading.
The police officers wouldn't be those who leave ordinary folks facing wild beasts alone below while waiting above, so once fully armed, their trio team headed down with flashlights.
After taking just a few steps, they heard Chen Ying below asking if anyone had food in their backpacks.
The others weren't reactive yet, but Dao Meihua reacted the fastest, opened her backpack, took out a sealed bag, and handed it to the police officers going down.
"I'll have the police officers deliver it to you, it's prepared nuts and fruits meant for monkeys."
The officer holding the sealed bag was stunned for three seconds, then headed down with gritted teeth.
Upon reaching below, he found Dai Wang standing at a point on the slope, his flashlight set to dispersed beam, currently illuminating the spot over ten meters ahead.
And in the middle of the light, a big bear was hugging a man's leg, whimpering and sulking.
Chen Ying's backpack didn't have food suitable for bears, only two small bread for filling, given to the bear, they were gone in one gulp each, not even tasting them.
Even if he had more, Chen Ying wouldn't dare let it eat much, the human body goes through technology and survival honing, but bears don't!
As soon as the fruit arrived, Chen Ying quickly opened the bag and fed them.
The fist-sized small red apples, sweet and juicy, were half a bite each.
The innkeeper had bought a lot of green dates today, Dao Meihua directly let the innkeeper consume three kilos, at least more than half are here, the rest are kept in the room as snacks.
There were also some local fruits, Chen Ying couldn't name them, looked odd, said to be quite tasty.
Since humans can eat them, bears should be able to too.
Chen Ying took one out and bit it, the juice was plentiful, the sweetness slightly bland.
He wanted another bite, the bear got upset and took it from his hand, stuffed it into its mouth.
Afterward, it hugged the whole bag into its arms, didn't even lift its bottom from the ground, spun around one hundred and eighty degrees on the spot, faced the tree trunk and hid the fruit bag, secretly peeking at Chen Ying with little eyes.
Chen Ying laughed in frustration, unceremoniously rubbed the bear's head, then turned to face the three police officers.
"Come, I'll help you with it, how do you want to cover?"
"Um, Mr. Chen, about this bear..."
No one dared to approach too closely, because while the bear might not bite you, it couldn't guarantee not biting someone else.
"It's okay, it's quite gentle."
As if to prove he wasn't lying, Chen Ying patted the bear's back several times, the slaps resounding with a smack that made the few officers present flinch at the sound.
The White Bear seemed aware that its presence was scaring the two-legged beasts. It cradled its food, slowly backing away until it settled under a tree more than ten meters away, earnestly eating the fruit.
"Hurry and get it done, or it might rain later."
Chen Ying clapped his hands, helping the police officers cordon off the area and cover it with a waterproof tarp to prevent the rain that might fall tonight from making it impossible to move the bones tomorrow.
Before covering it with the tarp, they also took photos.
The local police station in this scenic area didn't have a forensic doctor; only the county bureau did. They were on their way here, but wouldn't arrive until tomorrow morning at best.
After finishing up, everyone left. Chen Ying squatted down beside the White Bear and patted its belly.
"I'm going back to sleep. Finish eating and head back too. Don't disturb that area, understand?"
Seeing Chen Ying gesture to the covered spot, the White Bear nodded, obediently standing up and heading deeper into the forest.
Chen Ying exhaled, suddenly feeling a bit worried for this large but simple-minded bear.
It's so easy to approach and so docile; what if those with ill intentions find out about it?
With this concern, Chen Ying returned to the guesthouse, appearing somewhat distracted.
"What's wrong? Ever since you got back, you've seemed off. Did you find something down there?"
Dao Meihua handed him a cup of hot tea to ward off the chill.
"The White Bear found down there, it's too gentle. I'm worried it might get hurt by someone with ill intentions."
Dao Meihua hadn't expected this concern and couldn't help but laugh, "Mr. Chen, don't you realize your own charm? That White Bear might be a good baby in front of you, but to others, it's just a bear."
Otherwise, the guesthouse owner and those four students wouldn't have chosen to bypass it by climbing the slope.
The owner regretted not warning them earlier when he heard that Chen Ying and Dai Wang had gone down.
But in fact, when facing such beasts with keen hearing and sense of smell, staying silent and seizing the moment to quietly leave is the correct choice.
The owner gave each guest staying at the inn a portion of fruit for their rooms.
The last stop was Chen Ying's room, where the owner wanted to chat about the White Bear.
"Are you saying you plan to set up a spot to feed the White Bear?"
What's this, trying to create a gimmick for his guesthouse?
"Yes, not just the White Bear, but monkeys could work too, even birds."
The owner sat cross-legged and poured himself a cup of tea, making himself quite at home.
"Actually, this idea crossed my mind when I first opened the guesthouse, but because I'm somewhat clueless in this area, I didn't dare try it easily. Dr. Chen, you're the expert, do you think I can do it?"
"Strictly speaking, as long as you don't harm the wildlife, don't keep them captive, and don't restrict their freedom to come and go, feeding is permissible. However, whether the food will harm the animals requires consultation with an expert."
The owner glanced at him, clearly implying "isn't that why I'm consulting an expert here."
Chen Ying really didn't have much knowledge in this area. After all, his focus was primarily on rescue and treatment, whereas Little Sen was the technical support for feeding in their small team.
After chatting with the owner, he realized the owner only had this idea for now. As for whether it could be implemented, and whether the Administration Bureau would allow it, he had to find out for himself.
Chen Ying only promised that if all the procedures were handled correctly, and there were no legal issues, he could assist on a technical level.
After sending off the owner and Dao Meihua, Chen Ying finally took Little Bai out of the snake box.
Having been neglected for a few days, Little Bai wrapped itself around Chen Ying as soon as it was out, even wanting to sleep next to his pillow at night.
With no choice, Chen Ying made a small nest for it with a towel, letting it coil up inside before placing it next to his pillow.
Fortunately, the bed was large; if it were a single bed, one of them might have rolled onto the floor.
In the middle of the night, someone knocked on the door.
Chen Ying, with tousled hair and a headache, opened the door to see the young girl from the front desk.
"Mr. Chen, please take a look, there's a White Bear in the courtyard."
The young girl, brave as she was, looked pale with fright.
Chen Ying hurried out with her and saw the innkeeper and the security brother each holding a door shut, while outside, a bear's face was squished against the glass door, almost flattened.
How did this big guy end up here?
Chen Ying quickly approached, looking at the White Bear's body through the door. He gestured for it to back away, then swiftly squeezed out through the door gap.
The commotion wasn't small, and the guests who hadn't yet fallen asleep flocked to the lobby.
The guesthouse owner, face pale, urged them to go back to their rooms and lock their doors.
After all, the room doors were sturdy wooden ones, while the lobby only had a glass door that couldn't withstand a bear's paw!
Outside, the White Bear saw Chen Ying come out, grabbed his coat hem, and pulled him outward.
"Come on, something got inside."
What's gotten inside, into where?
