Chapter 450: The Occupied Home, The Premature Mother, and Their Shattered Selves
Chen Ying suddenly remembered the waterproof cloth he had left covering the corpse. Could it be that some other animal had gotten inside?
Chen Ying touched the neck of the White Bear, and sure enough, it was damp.
"I'll go have a look. Something probably damaged the site. The White Bear knows we're supposed to protect it and came specifically to inform us."
Hearing this, the boss suddenly felt his courage surge.
"Quick, get some fruit treats or whatever, and fill up our Baby Bear's stomach."
After giving instructions, he held onto Chen Ying to prevent him from leaving, "The road is slippery and dangerous, especially when it's drizzling and the air is humid like this. It's too unsafe to go now. Let's wait until daylight or when the rain stops."
He thought for a moment and added, "That old fellow has probably been sleeping out in the open for who knows how long, so one more night shouldn't matter."
This left everyone at a loss for words.
But he was right, climbing a mountain in the middle of the night is very dangerous, and knowing the risks can't simply be ignored.
Seeing the two-legged creature bring out a basin of fruit, the White Bear stood in the yard watching for a while, then carefully approached the stainless steel basin placed on the steps.
After sniffing it, it confirmed there was the scent of food.
The White Bear sat down with a thud, flattening a patch of flowers and plants the boss had meticulously tended to, but the boss wasn't upset; instead, he hurried to set up a large umbrella for it.
The guests watched for a little while but couldn't resist their sleepiness and returned to their rooms one by one.
The boss told the staff to carry on with their tasks, pulled over a deck chair, and settled down to sleep by the door.
Chen Ying was also uneasy about leaving the White Bear alone there, so he set up his tent on the porch outside the guesthouse lobby, just separated from the Big Bear by a wooden fence.
Not knowing how long he'd slept, Chen Ying felt a weight on his body and a foul smell.
Struggling to sit up, he saw half of the White Bear's body had snuggled into the tent, its butt sticking out, using his feet as a pillow, sleeping soundly.
Helplessly, he chuckled, lay back down, and continued to sleep.
As dawn was breaking, the police officers' vehicle arrived, and seeing the situation at the tent left everyone momentarily stunned.
Little Bai slipped out of the tent, washed its head and tail in a dripping flowerpot in the small garden, then climbed onto a nearby chair, dried itself off with a pillowcase, and scurried off into the grass on the side of the corridor.
"Quick, go and check if anything happened to the people..."
Before the words had fully left their mouth, Chen Ying was up, desperately shoving the White Bear out, sporting two dark circles under his eyes, greeted the police officers, before taking the White Bear's paw to wash it, getting ready for breakfast.
Last night, Chen Ying had told the boss to steam some cornbread with honey for the White Bear, thinking it would probably enjoy it, and also to prepare some sweet potatoes and fruit.
The White Bear was pushed around for quite a while but didn't throw a fuss. It obediently washed its paws, let Chen Ying help wipe its face, then sat politely at the spot it had eaten last night, waiting to be fed.
During the wait, it even looked naively at the police officers and even tried lifting its paw to wave to them...
"Oh my, pinch me, am I still dreaming? Did I just see a White Bear waving at me?"
"It's not just you; I saw it too. My god, could this bear be ready for kindergarten?"
Just then, the boss came rushing back from outside.
"I just went over to check, and the cloth is still covering it alright, but there seems to be something inside. Not sure if it's the small animals taking shelter from the rain."
He took some photos with his phone to show the police officers and called the staff to boil water for tea.
"No need, we've brought our own water. We'll park the car with you; we'll have to walk down."
"No problem, if you need any help, we've got a few young men here."
"No need, you all go about your business, we'll handle these matters ourselves."
Afterwards, the leading police officer called the boss aside and pointed at the White Bear, asking what was going on.
"Ah, this White Bear is really smart. I have surveillance footage from last night; I'll send it to you, and you'll see."
In the time it took for his colleagues to pack up their equipment, the two of them watched the video, their gums hurting from smiling.
"This is a protected animal, so take good care of it and don't do anything stupid. Also, keep an eye on your hotel guests. A bear injuring someone is not a minor incident."
"Got it, after Mr. Chen and the others are done, I'll ask them to help me design a feeding area that won't disturb other guests, and also allow them to see our Big Baby."
Chen Ying followed the police officers over, but kept a distance, given that he had such a cute (fierce) animal (beast) with him. Others were still afraid.
Upon reaching the place where they found the remains, they saw the rain cover had been pulled away from its original position, but the bones were still under the cover.
But not far from it, a small mound was arched up, seemingly still moving.
Chen Ying let White Bear enter the forest first, then he followed down, using a stick to lift that corner, revealing the little animals underneath.
It turned out to be a nest of small binturongs!
The Small Binturong Mother seemed to have just given birth. When the tarp was lifted, she stood up and hid the three babies under her, her fur bristling to warn the humans not to come close.
Chen Ying didn't expect this Cat Mother to be so careless about giving birth. Didn't she find a good place to give birth? She could give birth anywhere?
This certainly goes against the animal instinct, so Chen Ying first judged that the place this Small Binturong Mother had previously chosen was likely taken over by other animals. Maybe she even got into a fight and lost, forcing her to move overnight to here and couldn't hold on any longer.
She probably didn't know this tarp was going to be removed, and when it was lifted, exposing them, the Cat Mother let out a piercing cry.
Chen Ying quickly covered the small binturong family with his coat.
The coat had his scent, and the Small Binturong Mother's cries gradually calmed down, her voice softened quite a bit.
"This isn't going to work, she must have just given birth and can't find a suitable nest to settle the kittens."
Chen Ying regretted a bit, knowing this, he should have insisted on checking when White Bear came to find him last night. Perhaps he could have helped the Big Spirit Cat Mother find a suitable birthing room then.
"So what now?"
Several police officers had never encountered such a situation and were at a loss.
"I'll try to pick her up. If I can, I'll take them back to the inn and settle them there, waiting for the kittens to grow a bit. The Cat Mother will leave with them."
This time, both the innkeeper and the resort owner came.
They also heard Chen Ying's words, and the resort owner volunteered, saying his place is more spacious and even has a dedicated place for raising cats that could be vacated for the small binturong family.
"They don't like cat nests. Small binturongs prefer dry, dark, and quiet environments. The resort has many guests, and it might not be suitable."
"No problem. We have an empty space behind the resort where nothing's been built. Dr. Chen, just tell me what you need, and I'll have people deliver it immediately. We'll surely give them a satisfactory home."
"Then, look for a hollow tree trunk, bury half of it in the soil, make some camouflage nearby, and an entrance big enough for free in and out."
Chen Ying remembered that they made two artificial cat nests in the wild at Jiamu Gully. He still had the customization pictures on his phone.
He sent this to the innkeeper, leaving them to handle the cat nest setup, while Chen Ying squatted down, preparing to first take the small binturong family away to clear space for scene inspection.
With his jacket around them, the move went smoothly.
Setting up the cat nest at the resort needed time. In the meantime, Chen Ying could only have a cardboard box prepared, line it with his clothes, put the Cat Mother and the three kittens in, and then take the box back to his room.
The box was temporarily placed under his bed, with a hole dug beside it for the Cat Mother to enter and exit easily.
Fortunately, both the innkeeper and the resort owner love animals, and they were strict with their staff accordingly.
Chen Ying and his team needed to hurry into the mountains, leaving the task of caring for the Cat Mother to Dao Meihua.
Sadly, the Cat Mother couldn't be approached by anyone other than Chen Ying and Dao Meihua, not even for feeding.
Moreover, in the animal world, there are cruel precedents where if a wild mother thinks she cannot protect her children or if the children pick up a strange scent, she might eat them.
To prevent such a situation, Dao Meihua had to stay as a feeding tool man.
Luckily, the resort owner had remarkable financial capabilities and found the tree hole Chen Ying showed him by the afternoon.
Dao Meihua had also watched videos on how to camouflage artificial nests in Jiamu Gully. Under her guidance, the tree hole cat nest blended perfectly into the shrubbery, and after covering with dead branches and soil, it was impossible to discover where a nest of small binturongs lived unless one looked closely.
After settling in, it was left in the wild for a day and a night, with some soft grass leaves added inside, and with Chen Ying's towel padded on the branches and leaves.
Forty-eight hours later, the small binturong family finally had a satisfactory and comfortable home.
Over the coming months, the kittens will grow here and learn the ability to live independently, then leave their mother.
With nothing else to do, Dao Meihua contacted the rescue station colleagues to help the innkeeper design a feeding area for animals.
Just five or six meters below the inn's first floor, in the space between two bushes, approximately a quarter of a basketball court in area.
Here, two water troughs were made using a tile jar and a stone trough. Additionally, using local materials like dead branches and trunks, several wooden racks were built, on which racking holders were placed so bowls of bird feed could be stably put on them.
On the other side, the base was made of gravel, topped with pebbles, forming two areas for animals to eat. This design allowed for easy cleaning of the area, letting water seep directly into the ground without creating muddy water holes everywhere.
The two owners even bought separate refrigerators solely to store food for the animals.
Of course, feeding wasn't done daily. Only after heavy rain, during extremely hot weather, or in freezing cold conditions would the owners provide food to the animals, to prevent them from struggling to feed their young in extreme weather.
