Game Of Thrones : Merchant of Two Worlds

Chapter 141: 141. Sharing Luncheon

An injection involves using a syringe to administer medicine to a patient. It's a word Boris and his team learned from Jason Liu, and they found it quite descriptive and easy to understand.

Jason accompanied Boris to inspect a few more hospital wards. Each ward had several wooden beds, though they were bare, without mattresses or blankets.

Upstairs, they checked the living quarters. Boris had his own room, while the two male apprentices shared one, and the three female apprentices shared another.

After examining everything, Jason seemed satisfied. Compared to the state of some village clinics, this setup was a big improvement. "This is good enough," Jason said, nodding. "Once the renovations are done, we can start treating patients immediately!"

Boris beamed with excitement, his face flushed as he said, "I can't wait, my lord! The townsfolk are thrilled. They've heard about the new hospital and are eager for its opening. Both nobles and commoners are overjoyed. We're all so grateful for your generosity and kindness!"

Jason smiled at Boris's enthusiasm. "I trust you'll make a name for yourself here, Boris. Let this hospital be a testament to your skill and dedication. Show those bachelors who doubted you that their recognition doesn't define your abilities. Prove that your achievements in medicine can surpass theirs!"

Boris straightened, determination lighting his face. "I swear, my lord, I'll make this hospital something truly remarkable!" He couldn't help but imagine the astonishment on the faces of the Citadel's bachelors when they heard of his success.

That afternoon, Jason found time to host a luncheon for the important figures of his growing domain.

The main hall of the castle wasn't as grand as those in larger noble estates, but it was a decent size at over 200 square meters. For Jason, whose forces were still modest, it was more than sufficient for gatherings and banquets.

At the far end of the hall was a slightly raised platform with a table and chair, reserved for the castle's lord. This was where Jason, as the self-proclaimed Earl of Starfire City, presided over meetings, judged cases, and addressed his vassals. While he had no official fiefdom or significant vassals yet—aside from the seven knights he'd recently appointed—this area symbolized his authority and aspirations.

The day was bright and sunny, with light streaming through the hall's glass windows, making the space warm and welcoming without the need for candles or braziers. Jason had considered installing solar-powered lights he'd stored in the castle but hadn't found the time to do so yet.

Sitting at the head of the long dining table, Jason looked around the dim hall, which seemed insufficiently lit by modern standards. He made a mental note to install the solar lights soon to replace the candles they relied on at night.

The newly recruited chefs brought out dishes seasoned with spices, accompanied by stir-fried vegetables and roasted meats. Lena, Martha, Susan, Venisa, and Bella helped serve the food and poured red wine from the castle's cellar, stored in oak barrels.

Boris, dressed in a clean, wide-sleeved gray academic gown with numerous sewn-in pockets, arrived with a smile. These pockets held all manner of odd items—a gecko tail, antelope horns, bark, wolf teeth, and deer antlers—tools of the trade for a healer.

"My lord, I hope I'm not late," Boris said with a bow to Jason, who gestured warmly for him to sit.

"Not at all, Boris. You're just on time. Take your seat here on my left. You're my trusted advisor and an indispensable part of this family."

Boris's heart swelled with pride as he took the seat of honor next to Jason. This position was a clear acknowledgment of his value within Jason's household, much like Maester Luwin's relationship with Lord Eddard Stark.

As Boris sat, dicken and the other knights nodded respectfully to him.

"Good afternoon, Maester Boris," they greeted him warmly.

Boris smiled back. "Good afternoon, gentlemen."

Hearing Boris address them as "Sir" made the knights—dicken, McCann, Marb, Bud, Rubin, and Kent—feel a rush of pride. As newly knighted men, they were now members of the noble class, no longer commoners.

Their families, too, shared their joy. Back in their villages, their elevation to knighthood caused an uproar. Their parents and siblings were overjoyed, treating them with reverence and pride. They offered the knights the best rooms in their homes and the finest food, grateful for the honor brought to their families.

For five of the knights, this newfound status had transformed their lives. However, McCann had no family except for his sister Bella, and Jon's knighthood was met with skepticism in Winterfell, as Jason's title as Earl of Starfire City was not yet widely recognized.
