Game Of Thrones : Merchant of Two Worlds

Chapter 284: 284. Taking Advantage ?

"Isn't it a good thing for everyone to exchange the sacrifices of those sinners for the advancement of medical research, so as to save more innocent and kind patients?"

Qyburn's blue eyes stared at Boris. When he mentioned his research, the old man's eyes glowed. "Those criminals who should be damned are just useless garbage. Why should they hinder the progress of medicine? Woolen cloth?"

"You... your thinking is too extreme, Bachelor Qyburn..." Boris, stared down by the tall and lanky Qyburn, broke into a cold sweat and stammered.

Qyburn glanced at Boris in disappointment and shook his head. "Boris, your thinking is too narrow, just like the gray sheep in the academy. Although you're only an assistant bachelor now, you can't even be called a gray sheep, let alone 'one hundred and eighty-three.'"

Being scolded in front of the bachelors—called a "gray sheep," and even being told he didn't qualify as one—made even the good-natured Boris flush with anger. He opened his mouth, about to righteously accuse the other party, this immoral man who had been stripped of his bachelor's qualifications by the academy.

At that moment, Jason Liu suddenly smiled and said, "Bachelor Qyburn, I think you're right! Rather than being kind to those criminals who deserve to die, let them do their best to contribute to the medical progress of mankind before they die. That is also redemption for their sins."

"Master, Master?" Boris turned his head and looked at Master Jason in astonishment. He couldn't believe that his own master would support this immoral bachelor—wasn't that against the rules of the academy?

Compared to Boris's shock, Qyburn looked at Jason Liu with bright eyes. This was the first time he had heard a nobleman agree with his ideas.

This made Qyburn very happy. He even began to wonder how he could persuade the young earl to fund his research.

At that moment, Jason Liu also had the idea of using Qyburn as a tool.

The two men, each with their own motives, both saw sincere smiles on the other's face and felt confident that their plans would succeed.

"Come on, Bachelor Qyburn, let's go back to my castle and have a good chat!"

Of course, Jason Liu wouldn't get too close to Qyburn in the crowded hospital and instead invited him to the castle nearby.

"Thank you very much for your invitation, Lord East. It's my honor!" Qyburn smiled brightly, feeling more and more confident that he could gain support from the rumored rich tycoon Earl.

Since being expelled from the academy and stripped of his bachelor's title, Qyburn had been forced to serve warriors who, though they appeared to be mercenaries, were no different from robbers, just to survive and continue his research.

Robbers were always at risk of losing their lives. If they were unlucky, they'd be wiped out by a nearby noble's army or cut down over internal disputes about spoils.

It was too dangerous to stay among the warriors, and if he had a better option, Qyburn wouldn't remain there a day longer.

Not long ago, the warriors had robbed a businessman returning from the North to the Riverlands. From him, Qyburn heard about the East Hospital outside Winterfell and the Earl Jason Liu.

Qyburn didn't care whether the man was kind, generous, or noble—after all, the nobility of Westeros was all the same to him.

What caught his attention was one thing the businessman said before he was tortured to death by the gang: the foreign earl had brought with him advanced medical knowledge and miraculous medicines from across the sea.

Not long after, even scholars from various castles in the North came to East Hospital, hoping to learn and get access to these miracle treatments.

When it came to medical research—his specialty—Qyburn, a scientific madman, couldn't sit still. His curiosity was like a cat scratching at his heart. He was desperate to find out more about these advanced techniques and medicines.

So, Qyburn, tired of hanging out with the gang of robbers and warriors, lied that he was heading to the nearby market to buy herbs. He then sneaked away, used the silver stags he had saved to buy a riding horse, and made his way north.

He was lucky—he wasn't chased by the warriors and didn't encounter other bandits on the way. Eventually, he safely arrived at the town outside Winterfell.

Jason Liu brought Qyburn back to the castle hall and invited him to sit at the long table.

Boris sat on Jason's left, his eyes fixed on the former bachelor opposite him, who always had a gentle smile and was full of extreme ideas.

He was worried that Lord Jason would be deceived by this tainted man. Boris, trained under orthodox academy teachings, was already in his thirties and still hadn't earned his bachelor's degree.

Even so, that didn't mean Boris approved of Qyburn's earlier statements.

The academy strictly forbade the use of living people in medical experiments. It was immoral and disrespectful to humanity.

As for sacrificing criminals for medical progress to save more lives—well, Boris's reason told him it was logical, but emotionally, he still found it hard to accept.

The four Barlow brothers stood behind Master Jason, who sat at the head of the long table. Though Qyburn was an elderly man, they kept a close eye on him to ensure their lord's safety.

Lena and Bella entered with juice and served it to the three men.

"In our Empire, our medical technology has developed to a very high level. We've even created effective medicines for various diseases," Jason Liu said with a smile to the Bachelor of Science, who seemed extremely interested. When Jason spoke, Qyburn's eyes lit up.

"As we all know, every time a new drug is developed, we must test its therapeutic effects. Compared to monkeys, pigs, rabbits, or mice, it's obviously more accurate to test drugs on humans."

Jason Liu paused slightly, pretending to agree with Qyburn's idea. "So, I think your method of using criminals in medical research is not only practical but also worth considering as an official policy in the city."

"After all, those criminals are people who deserve their fate. If they can dedicate their lives to the medical advancement of humanity, then that, in a sense, is a form of progress!"
